Halloween Viewing Log 2009

Saw Paranormal Phenomenon and Wrong Turn 3 last night. Wrong Turn 3 was good in the way that the second film was. Maybe a little better. It was a Treasure of the Sierra Madre kind of story about some escaped prisoners being transferred from one prison to another. Not really horror, of course, just the usual survival type thing they make now.

Paranormal Phenomenon wasn't as bad as my sister led me to believe. At least stuff actually happens, unlike Blair Witch, though it's less believable in terms of the performances and writing. I'd say it's okay, but that's about it.

I watched Mad Monster Party. Yes it's silly and dumb but how could you not love it for those reasons?

Hocus Pocus - One of the few Halloween movies I thoroughly enjoy watching. I grew up with it and I can't wait to watch it again. Hopefully it'll be on soon cause I really do love that movie. I only wish that when I do watch it again that it's unedited (stupid ABC Family). Bette Midler is freaking fantastic as are Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker. Great casting choice; and the musics not that bad either.

I bought the DVD today and hope to watch it soon. After I bought it I realized it is getting a rerelease next year, but I can't wait that long. Oh well, this is going to be a FUN halloween.

I'll save Hocus Pocus for Halloween night, as always, not that I couldn't watch it multiple times... It's one of my all time fave movies! Always wished there was a soundtrack CD available.

I did watch Fido today, the movie set in the 50's when people are keeping zombies as servants/pets. Great comedy! Just bought it in the serious waste of plastic "body bag" edition at Best Buy.

Oh, and last night I watched Wolf and The Beast Must Die on AMC. I do own Wolf on DVD but need to get Beast Must Die, and I just found out Wolf is on Blu now.

Oh, also last night I watched Trick R Treat again while enjoying some pumpkin bread I just baked (bought the action figure of Sam today too).

Season 6, Episode #13: "Comes the Dawn"

A pretty stupid set-up: two jerk "man's" men go on a mini-rampage in Alaska, looking to kill anyone who get in their way. Especially women. And some endangered species, so they can turn in pieces of them for big bucks. But, since it's so cold up there... who is it an ideal hiding place for? Think about it: cold blood, hibernation, and since this is a horror story- hungering for human prey? I want to ruin the surprise for you, because it should be obvious to everyone. But I'll just say- the ultimate (quite novel) twist is sexual. So pay close attention. To the dialogue (get your mind out of the gutters!). The acting is only passable, the music stinks, the special effects are... really ugly. But I think the ending is satisfying enough. And I liked the villain's motivation. Well actually, everyone here are villains. But the villain to them is the hero to us. So, I should say the hero is easy to identify with.



Season 1, Episode #3: "The Man Who Was Death"

One of the best-photographed and best-looking Crypt episodes. It's well-cast, well-acted, and has pretty good ideas all around. It's also incredibly pretentious and unfortunately narrated throughout. Far beyond the point where you just want this guy to shut up already. This is a sad thing, because in terms of characterization- I agreed with what he was doing and thought he had pretty good judgment. The problem is we go to know him much too well. He didn't talk just shop. And that's a shame. His job is all he's good at. He's a void as a human being, so we don't want to hear all his thoughts on life. Death is his expertise and had he stuck to that, there'd be no problems. Also, if he knew the drill about the way prisoners whined so much before they were executed... why wasn't he able to avoid doing the same thing? 12 years of telling the condemned to stop their crying and he's as big a wimp as they are?? A very predictable ending- that doesn't come soon enough. Skippable.



Season 1, Episode #1: "Dig That Cat... He's Real Gone"

Richard Donner's best work by far in the horror genre, this one tries for no-drama (a relief after the not-in-on-the-joke, unintentionally awful "The Ventriloquist's Dummy"), the pacing is fantastic, there's good camerawork that keeps the energy high, and the twist is well-orchestrated and actually kinda surprising. My favorite Joe Pantoliano performance (actually, the only one I liked). This one definitely has some unexpected surprises, all of them good. Count along at home, everyone!



Season 1, Episode #6: "Collection Completed"

I've definitely been wondering to myself- what's the worst episode of Tales from the Crypt? Over the past 3 weeks, I've seen a few disappointing ones. And I've seen some bigtime stinkers. But this Mary Lambert (Pet Sematary, Pet Sematary Two) episode takes the cake! A clinically-insane couple are homebound together after he's retired from this job at age 65 and instead of being able to enjoy his old age, he develops sadistic, murderous tendancies and thinks it would be fun to start killing the neighborhood pets, stuffing them, and tormenting his animal-loving wife by leaving their corpses littered around the house for her to find. Sweet, isn't it? This one has a hateful, inhuman streak a mile long and is a chore at every interval, a stretch of patience, and a test of heart to make it through... and for what? The most predictable twist of the entire series? Let me ruin it for you folks, after he kills every pet but a cat and a few fish: she kills him, stuffs him, and leaves him for her neighbor to find. Again- isn't that sweet? I'd give Mary Lambert credit for having the guts to always push the envelope in her horror projects... but after Sematary Two and this, I have to know... what the hell is her problem? This is too-sick for anyone, especially someone of the sensitivity it must have taken to direct some of Madonna's finest videos!

Last night I watched The Goonies.

It was Goonies Day yesterday. What's Goonies Day? Well over at the TheGoonies.org message board we figured out that the day the Goonies go on their adventure is Oct 26, so we just all watch the movie on this day.

Im going to watch something tonight, but I'm still not sure what because it has to be shorter (I'm driving to Calgary tomorrow and won't be back until Friday). I think I'll pull out Disney's Sleepy Hollow from The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad.

Watched Love At First Bite last night, and also the first part of Tin Man, which I recently got on DVD.

Oh, and the night before that, I watched Evil Dead 2 on blu.

I know it's over, but to cover the big day itself, I watched (not necessarily in this order) CHarlie Brown, Garfield, Spaced Invaders, the Hallmark Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Raggedy Ann and Andy and the Pumpkin WHo Couldn't Smile, and of course, Hocus Pocus. Oh, and watched "The Uninvited" on TV. I hope I'm not forgetting anything. Since the pumpkins are still good, I may still try to squeeze in a couple more tonight, like the Burton and Disney Sleepy Hollows, which I normally watch on the big day itself. It was so rushed this Halloween, despite it being on a Saturday, since I had to work all week and all, which is a first for me, ha. Didn't leave the house on Halloween night, as usual, but there's nothing great to do around here anyway. Hopefully I'll get to party a little when I move to a bigger city. Passed out candy in my costume and watched movies mostly, and when I was able to take my costume off (I dressed as my werewolf comic strip character, Monty Moonlight of Moonlight Motel), I ate a lot of junkfood, ha. A friend of mine came over later for some goodies too and to watch Hocus Pocus, but it was pretty uneventful otherwise.

All I got in was Hocus Pocus and The Nightmare Before Christmas. I was kind of at a marching band competition all Halloween Day, so I think that's why I only watched two movies. Oh well, maybe, if I have time this week, I'll watch Sweeney Todd - which is kind of Halloweeny.

Still watching Halloween stuff since we haven't thrown our pumkins out yet, though they're getting moldy, so I hope they have one more night in them. Tonight I watched Disney's Ichabod half of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, then the movie "Silver Bullet". I usually watch Disney's Ichabod on Halloween evening, but I just didn't get to squeeze it in this year (now that I think about it, I also didn't watch any Food Network or similar network Halloween shows, which sucks because I usually enjoy those). I also watched the Tim Burton Sleepy Hollow late this year, on Sunday night I believe, and Monday night I watched the Hallmark version again. Not sure if I've forgotten anything. Tonight, I also watched the first episode of the new "V", and I've been watching bits and pieces of the original V on Sci-Fi lately. The original rebel leader girl was quite the hottie (one episode was really trying to make her look like a blonde Princess Leia, ha), and the new show has Smallville Supergirl Laura Vandervoort looking hotter than EVER.
