I know it's easier for them to put previews before the menu - what I hate is when they have a bunch of non-skippable stuff... including those pesky FBI warnings that most people just ignore (cough), the studio bumpers (I'm all for collecting bumpers, but I've seen them all 50000 times, I don't need to keep seeing them!), etc. Sometimes they prohibit you from pressing "menu" on the trailers so you have to chapter-seek them or even fast-forward.I agree with you, drfsupercenter. It would be much more convenient as a consumer to just have the menu appear first. However, as a business major who understands marketing, any studio would be stupid to do that. While it doesn't take a genius to hit the menu button and skip all previews to get to the movie, there are people out there who are either to lazy or who simply just don't know that they can skip the previews. So they will watch them and be informed on what else the studio has to offer in the next few months. It's a marketing opportunity that virtually costs nothing, aside from the cost of producing the add. Its the same principle behind sticking flyers in the cases to advertise releases as well.
I remember the early days of DVD when indeed, most studio DVDs started the movie automatically, before even taking you to the menu. In fact, the oldest Blu-Ray I have, Disney's Dinosaur, does the exact same thing... that disappointing Blu-Ray doesn't even have a menu. It has a pop-up menu that you have to use to change any settings or to access bonus features.
I know of quite a few older releases, though, that did jump straight to the menu. The Criterion Collection does this for their discs (At least the ones I've seen) - where it just goes straight to the menu and you can have the movie started within 10 seconds. I guess they figure hardcore collectors who buy their releases have seen enough advertising for one lifetime.
Another bunch of DVDs that do it right, IMO, is the anime DVDs from Pioneer/Geneon, etc. Those display the FBI warnings when you pop the disc in, followed by a Pioneer (or Geneon, depending on the year) bumper, and then go straight to the menu. While you do have a wait a little bit, it's like 15 seconds total.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure BD-Live features are actually online and not on the disc itself. That means every time you watch those videos, they're streaming from an online server, like YouTube does. Therefore, they're not gonna be very long - it would just take too long to download. (Often times they're only 480p quality too, or lower)The BD-Live Prince Caspian Vignettes are short, though.

Savages (Uncensored)
If it ain't OTV, it ain't worth anything!

@goofystitch: Maybe retail stores don't want to push it was much as the studios do.

But even the stores make more money off of Blu-Ray sales than they do on DVD sales, so its really in their best interest to off the gift with purchase on both. Personally, if a store doesn't have a giveaway, I buy from Best Buy where I get Reward Zone points that turn into gift cards. If Best Buy is more expensive than Target, its usually only by a dollar or two and they take better care when stocking their movies. I'm sick of buying banged up cases from Target.

I heard right from a retailer that they don't like how much Disney charges per extra disc and how as a result how it makes it more difficult for them to mark down for customers. From them saying that, it makes more sense for them to make a promotion for the DVD version than the Blu-ray version as they don't have much marking down room/promotion room with BD's.goofystitch wrote:But even the stores make more money off of Blu-Ray sales than they do on DVD sales, so its really in their best interest to off the gift with purchase on both. I checked the Target and Best Buy circulars and there's no mention of any. So unfortunately, it's probably likely it's an R2 retail exclusive, like the retail bonus disc for Prince Caspian. Caspian's was available from Zavvi's, I think.The_Iceflash wrote:I can't seem to figure out if there's going to be that retail bonus disc or not and where.
Still, I'd rather have the retail bonus disc instead of a $5 coupon.

Thanks for the link jrboy! I was thinking about picking up the movie, then I thought the price was a bit steep for the deluxe, but with the coupon I think I'll pick it up.jrboy wrote:Coupons

I feel cheated. I wish I would have thought to wait and see if there's a coupon.
