Good point. That's basically why I feel disappointed about its cancellation too. Pixar hasn't made a film that primarily addresses the subject of love, (except perhaps Wall-E). While each film has bits of romance in them, they are not prevelently featured as the main "idea".zackiellovedisney wrote:What Newt was one I was really looking forward too. I don't believe it they have to finish Newt it sounds like a great storyline and can teach kids about love. Since the love is forced it would make the movie dramatic. Now all Pixar has is sequels which I am fine with but I want originality again.
The long lineup of sequals reminds me very much of Disney in the late 90s and early 2000s when every animated classic was getting a sequal treatment. Also add to the list A Bug's Life 2. I heard this recently, (I forgot where) but it was from several different sources...

Sad that we appear to have gotten our first bona fide Pixar casualty. I'm sure there are other halted ideas similar to this, just none that have been announced and made real production progress.
I think Pixar has done enough right for us to trust their judgment that there just wasn't anything salvageable about Newt. It sounded kind of interesting but not extremely so, from the little we had to go on. And I would think Gary Rydstrom needs more than Lifted to make him ready to be a feature director at Pixar's level. (Even if everyone's a first-time director at some point.)
The timing of all these things is making Pixar look really sequel-happy and yet how many sequels and spin-offs will DreamWorks have churned out from now through 2012? While the jump to two films a year at Pixar is exciting, I think they've been wise not to get there sooner (as tempting as twice the profits must sound). Pixar's releases are probably the most consistently special of anything in film today. And clearly, lots of time go into making them that way.
And A Bug's Life 2 is absolutely not legit at this point, despite that Pixar sequels rant article.

probably just figured it was worth sharing. theres no reason to be secretive anymore about what would have been, might as well put the art work out there for fans to enjoy. their not going to put it back into production based on the response they get. if it ever gets back on track it'll be because they worked out whatever story problems that got it canceled in the first place.

Wow, I'd never believe Pixar would do this:
I wish WDAS would share some artwork from abandoned films also e.g. The Snow Queen among a gazillion others over the decades..."As most of you already know, "Newt" is no longer in development at Pixar. However, that doesn't mean we can't share some of the Pixar artists' amazing artwork with our Facebook fans!"

Pixar's Newt is Gone
Yea, but not if they plan on doing Snow Queen later. For obvious reasons but also, if they did, people could steal the ideas and make their own version.sotiris2006 wrote:I wish WDAS would share some artwork from abandoned films also e.g. The Snow Queen among a gazillion others over the decades...
I still think Pixar could revive Newt, too...

When has Pixar ever shyed away from a challenge? all the movies run into technical hurdles to overcome, but we're at a point now where we can really do anything imaginable. Im sure that whatever reason it was canceled has nothing to do with technical problems, but rather the story. Maybe they felt it was going to be hard to do the plot justice and still be kid friendly enough.
