I don't think so. This is my topic.

Um, this isn't about what I hate. Have you been paying attention? What I hate is irrelevant.

Laz, you're gonna hate me for awhile and likely shun me for a couple weeks but I have a confession to make...

*gulp*

I saw Blades of Glory on Easter. Hated it, found it to be entirely predictable and far too hammy and ridiculous to be considered entertaining. It was either this or Meet the Robinsons, and unfortunately, the majority of my cousins preferred Will Ferrell and Napoleon Dyna - er, Jon Heder - in this 90-odd minute romp around the ice.

I totally agree with the entire reasoning behind this thread.

Movies like Blades of Glory and Scary Movie 4, that bring in a much bigger box office than movies of quality released at the same time, make the world a very sad place sometimes.

I mean - really....which is going to stand the test of time, Blades of Glory or Meet the Robinsons? Which one is going to be replayed more often on DVD?

I can't tell you how much I despise stupid comedies that exist only to entertain the general mindless population for two hours of their life. --I am not trying to offend people who have seen this movie as mindless....I'm just saying there are much better things you could do with your time or make better choices when seeing a movie.

I can't speak for Blades of Glory, but Anchorman is immensely quoteable. Just like Monty Python, and I can see Anchorman getting lots of replay value. I actually think, Anchorman has moments that are very smart in them. (Talladega Nights I'll admit was a huge disappointment)

Talking of Monty Python and smart/dumb, you know people despised Monty Python when it was first shown on British TV? People accused them of dumbing down comedy.

They actually said Monty Python was dumbing down - a show which has sketches built around Proust, famous historical philosophers and other significant intellectuals or movements. Yes, they had nonsense like "Self Defense Against Fresh Fruit", "Spam" and "The Ministry for Silly Walks" etc., but even most of the other sketches and songs like "The Argument Sketch", "I'm A Lumberjack" and "The Spanish Inquisition" are written and performed incredibly well.

Now, like them or loathe them, I don't think anyone would class the Pythons of dumbing down comedy.
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

I do care about good movies. I have seen some independant films that I liked. I dont like EVERY movie that makes millions of dollars. I actually found Blades of Glory to be mediocre to be honest. I think you are exaggerating a bit when you say these movies are destroying cinema. A lot of movies that get nominated for Oscars are not usually comedies like Blades of Glory or Night at the Museum.

I will also admit that I am getting a bit tired of these occupational comedies myself. They were okay for a while, now they are starting to bother me a bit.

Truthfully who cares what you like or dislike, a movie is made for our entertainment, just because you dont like somethink or someone does not mean someone else wont like it. EVERYONE has their own tastes, some people like the stupid comidies while others like a thriller or drama, Occupational Comedies are some of the oldest forms of movies. My mood helps me decide what kind of movie I want to see, sometimes I just need the stupid laugh after a tough day at work or I may want to see a drama or mystery if I want something to think about. I dont care what movie critics or anybody else think. I like to decide for myself if Ilike a film. I really despise people putting a film down that they have not seen. How would you know if it's good or not. If you have not seenit dont say how much you dislike it.

There you go - and you can see why. Because they are never-ending. All they do is stick a bunch of options in a hat for what new stupid take on someone's career they can make and pick it out. The humor and jokes are completely recycled from each of the other movies. If there's absolutely nothing new, fresh, interesting, or good, there is absolutely no justification for making the movie. All they're doing with these movies now are changing the look of them and the supporting casts. That's it! All they're doing are giving people who work in the movie business more jobs and making the idiot executives richer who only give films based on completely hackneyed, unoriginal junk like this the greenlight.

Dare I say it, memnv? I think you're getting better at this whole thing? I expected you were going to give me the hardest time of all. I think you've actually managed to bring a fresh perspective in on this topic.

Of course you're oversimplifying the situation. This topic is about the fact that the only people being satisfied with mainstream comedies right now are idiots and rich Hollywood executives. If you don't consider yourself an idiot, I really would've thought you'd have sensed that you like the rest of American audiences are being seriously short-changed in the cinema and stood up for yourself, declaring that you deserve better movies.

Like I said - taste has nothing to do with this. Well, bad taste does. But this isn't about personal taste. You're talking about whether or not the movie looks appealing based on advertising. I'm talking about the way these movies are being made. Because you don't need to be a brain surgeon to know these movies are all the same. They all star Will Ferrell for Christ's sake. The man has almost zero comedic talent anyway. That's one thing, apart from what the "writers" of these movies are doing. NOBODY'S TRYING TO MAKE MOVIES ANYMORE. They're all just copying what's been done already.

So, quit saying this is about my taste versus other people's. Open your eyes. If you don't notice the trend, perhaps you're not going to be any help whatsoever in this discussion. If all you're going to try and do is discredit me, than you just don't get it.

Is this new, If you went to a movie with the Keystone Cops, Abbot and Costello, Three Stooges..... you knew what to expect, I saw Blades of Glory and it did not remind me of Wills other movies, I have liked some of his movies, disliked others and some were so-so.

The first timeI saw the trailer forBlades of Glory I had decided I did not want to see it, but the more I saw the trailer my opinion changed, I am not a huge fan of Will Ferrall, It is only the 3rd one of his movies that I have seen in theaters, the others being Stranger than Fiction and Elf.

There have been many movies that I wanted to see that I was disappointed with and others that I did not want to see that I liked, so I try not to be opinionated anymore

The opposite of what?

memnv wrote:and I can say what I want to also
That depends... on what you're saying and what you're talking about.

memnv wrote:I have as much right to say what I want and you do.
Now I have to ask... what are you talking about?

I agree to a certain extent. I do think that these occupational and sport comedy flicks are spreading like wild-fire, and it would be refreshing to see a change of pace. However, I do like Will Ferrell and find most of his work nothing short of hilarious. Ever seen A Night at the Roxbury? Classic! But you must admit, he is a decent actor. His performance was brilliant in Stranger than Fiction.

Anywho, I'm going to see Blades of Glory later on this afternoon, so I will post my opinions on it when I return.

Until then,

Why would I? He's not.

Besides, you just said you liked him, so don't you think that's clouding your judgment? Maybe... a little?

I agree, he's an awful actor.

Yes, but by the same logic, it could be said that since you have already said you dislike him and that you dislike occupational comedies, your and my judgements are also clouded.

I thought about that. That popped into my head during that reply. I of course, didn't think it out to see what I would say when someone else pointed it out.

However, technically I didn't say I disliked him and that's why his movies are bad. I said his movies are bad, he has no talent, and that's why I don't like him. I mean - who would like a bad actor, making bad movies, and who's hurting the quality of movies as a whole by having so many studios giving him all their comedies?

I think that perhaps it's just a matter of him being better on Saturday Night Live. That he's really an ensemble player when at his best. That he can't really carry a movie all by himself. That he's just not good enough. And I mean, maybe people will disagree with this one paragraph, but you can tell these things just by watching him on outtakes or in interviews. I have seen some of his movies, but am plenty smart enough to know after about the 6,724th time he's making the same comedy over again just with a different occupation, to know when a movie is going to be the same damn thing that's already come out just by it's advertisement.
