I don't know...

When I first opened that link and saw the first picture, I actually thought it was Van Helsing...

Very curious about how they handle the story, though. Let's be honest, the target demographic for an action film is not going to be turned on by a remake of an all-instrumental Mickey Mouse sequence from a film first released in the 1940s... But who knows? Maybe it's just a retelling of the original story.

Wasn't The Sorcerer's Apprentice that short in Fantasia and Fantasia 2000?
If yes, who is that blonde girl and what's her role? The broom? :?

Yes, this was a short in the Fantasia films, but that was adapted from an earlier story, as well.

Was there a blonde girl?

Toby Kebbell Joins The Sorcerer's Apprentice
Source: Variety April 20, 2009

Variety reports that Toby Kebbell will play celebrity illusionist Drake Stone in Disney's The Sorcerer's Apprentice. Stone joins forces with Alfred Molina's evil sorcerer, Horvath, to gain ultimate powers.
The Jerry Bruckheimer production, based on the popular segment in Disney's animated classic Fantasia, takes place in contemporary New York, where a wizard (Nicolas Cage) searches for an apprentice (Jay Baruchel). Teresa Palmer also stars in the film, directed by Jon Turteltaub.
Executive producing are Cage and his Saturn Films partner Norm Golightly as well as Todd Garner, Barry Waldman and Jerry Bruckheimer Films' Mike Stenson and Chad Oman.
The film is scheduled for release on July 16, 2010.

So it looks quite different than the original, which is good. :)

This is a case where you can't make the two too similar, otherwise there would be too many comparisons.

I agree with Siren and Loomis and a few others - they're just using the basic premise in the Sorcerer's apprentice. It sounds to me like most of the people who don't like this idea, are married to the thought that this is going to be a faithful remake of the Fantasia segment.

Frankly, I was thinking whatever they need to do to come up with some fresh live-action movies is fine with me, since they have not had any blockbusters since the POTC series. And I'm a Nicholas Cage fan; love the National Treasure series and glad to see him in this effort.

This is a little off-topic (ie I imagine there might be a thread for this topic by now) but I was just thinking - they never released Fantasia as a platinum edition. But I just checked UD's animated classics page, and it looks like they've finally (?) slated it for a release as part of the animated classics platinum series. Is this an afterthought, or like Pinocchio, they just kept pushing it back so they could generate more sales by re-releasing already released princess classics?

Escapay:

Have to agree. For a lot of people, working for Disney is "just a job" that they got because of the line of work they are in. I certainly know a few people like this. Yes, there are those who count themselves as Disney-nuts and who've been lucky enough to get a job there.... lets look at the case of the animation division. Remember the film, "Dream On Silly Dreamer" ? That seems to be a good example of the later - those who thought they'd never leave the company and found themselves out of a job. It's pretty sad. It seems like those in the later category are mostly responsible for the Disney-hate books we see out there on the market (I think it is tough to be in love with a company and then get fired - I see why these people felt their whole lives crumbling around them, their whole identity crumbling as well.) But for the bigger fish that work for Disney - they have a lot of options and are basically functioning as "free agents" - taking opportunities where the present themselves, be it at Disney or any other company.

I was looking forward to this, but the trailer honestly didn't do much for me. Not even the little bit with the brooms made me smile.

Looks bad. Seriously, I was looking forward to this but after viewing the trailer, all excitement has vanished. The exact same thing happened with Avatar, the other movie Apple had a countdown for it's trailer premier, after seeing the blue aliens my enthusiasm vanished.

I hope I'm wrong and both these movies are good but I won't hold my breath.

To be honest, I am very, very, very, very very skeptical about this. Sure, the trailer looks pretty cool, kind of like a Harry Potter meets a modern action movie (not sure if that would be good or bad), but....

Only time will tell, really.

As I posted over on Micechat:
I thought I just watched a trailer for The Dark Knight meets Ghostbusters 2.

I think Disney and Nic Cage should've stuck to finding out what's on page 47.

I gotta say, I just saw the trailer at appletrailers.com, and I think this film looks fantastic. I'm amazed everyone is psyched for this Avatar movie and saying this one looks bad. Totally the other way around for me.

I would say I like it so far, but honestly Nicolas Cage? I've said it before and I'll say it again... ew.

Overall though, it does look cool. It's not what I expected in a very good way.

If I watched it, not knowing it was for Sorcerer's Apprentice, I might have thought it was for Gargoyles.
