However, that screen cap from the new DVD in comparison with the picture from IGN would beg to differ. The picture from the DVD has slightly more image to the left, but the picture on IGN has MUCH more image on the left. Of course you have to flip it. The left of the DVD scan is the right of the web image. Also, the web image's colors are much brighter and the quality is much clearer. I'm confused if that was an original background and cell from the film and the movie really was filmed in fullscreen, or if Disney just doesn't know and so they say it was fullscreen. I find it hard to believe that they would be wrong about something like this, but the original release of the GC version had the "this film has been modified from it's original version. It has been formatted to fit your screen" message on the case. Very interesting.
This is what i think.
A The wider image i bet is a "still image" provided by Disney as a publicity shot and did not come from the actual movie.
they do that sometime.
that's what i think.
This film was NOT in widescreen and i don't know why.
no where within the "making of" this topic is being discussed and that's just too bad as they did bring all of the animators who created this movie, even the very old ones.

Well that's good to know. I'm glad the animators came back for the making of. Thanks again Mike. Now I wonder if they didn't shoot hours worth of interviews. I bet the next time it's released it gets a longer making of with what was cut out. lol.

Overall, the new DVD restoration seems like an improvement of the old one, but I admit that some shots look better on the GC disc. It seems contrast is a little off on the new disc, but it's still sharper than before. This seems to be on-par with Dumbo's restoration, but like I said earlier, it's hard to tell because of the sketchy, muddy style of the film's animation. I expect more of the same with Robin Hood, but since that film exhibits a far more colorful palette than Fox and the Hound, it'll be easier to notice the restoration work in that one.

I thought this film was made in widescreen. That's what it says here on UD. Does this mean that there is a possibility that the film is presented in its OAR on this 25th Anniversary DVD?

lighthousemike, thanks a lot (again)!

The restoration seems dissapointing to me.. Dumbo's one was a lot better, a lot of the colors and the contrast were heavily improved.. All that seems to be changed for FatH is the brightness and a tiny little bit more sharper :( Still buying it though!

since this is the same aspect ratio, I'm second guessing weather or not to buy this version, or the gold collection one. I'm still trying to wait and hear other opinions on it before I decide though.

For some reason, Disney's stopped doing two trailers for their DVD releases since Bambi. They used to have a teaser trailer which told you the film was coming, and a few months later they'd have another one which showcased both the film and its supplements. I'm not sure why they don't do it anymore, but either way, I wouldn't expect another Peter Pan trailer other than the one on both Little Mermaid and Fox and the Hound. Besides, that's a pretty freaking awesome trailer, anyway. It gives me chills everytime I watch it.

If it was shot and released in widescreen, why does the back of the box say it was modified from its original version and formatted to fit the TV screen? :?

Odd...

Image

-Regular Frame: 25th Anniversary
-First Two Boxes: Gold Collection
-Third Box: IGN Still

The IGN box couldn't cooperate, which is why it's misaligned up top...

If the IGN still is from an actual widescreen frame of the film and not a promotional image, then it's pretty much a confirmation of what's been said for years, that the DVD is pan & scan...

I really wouldn't use the ign shot as proof of anything. I think its just a promo shot and nothing more. they used the original cel/background which had more of the scene drawn but for purposes of the movie, they couldn't use the whole shot. the fact that the shot was flipped is enough to make me believe it was never meant to be a screen shot, just a visually representation of the characters.

anyway, when do you guys think we'll get a review of this thing?
Im not familiar with how soon this site posts reviews. Im just waiting for any credible site to desect the two transfers and tell me which one is best. (or if it somehow ends up being a toss up). Id prefer to get the new one easily, as I hate bare bones sets. and while it may not have much in the way of extras, I still want them. but not at the cost of a poor transfer.

UD *used* to get the discs two to three weeks ahead of release date, but lately BVHE is slacking and Luke's only getting them one or two weeks ahead of time. Coupled with the fact that he sends some of them to the other regular reviewers here, reviews can be as early as a week before the release, or to a couple days before (or in some cases, late as much as a month - yeah, that was my Baby Einstein review...).

Whether or not that clip is taken from the film, I can't help drooling at the its sharpness and clarity, and how mouch more defined it is, compared to the GC and 25th Anniversay transfers. Just look at the grass. Youcan barely make out the individual blades from the other clips!

Is the trailer for The Fox and the Hound 2 the same one we saw in Bambi 2? It's quite possible that new footage may have been added now that were closer to the release date. If that is so please upload the trailer cause I am curious.

Yeah you said it!
When will Dinsey get it? WHEN!
That shot is how the new transfer should look like.
