Yesterday was the R1 release of The Hand of Fear and Mark of the Rani, both of which I haven't picked up yet. Heck, there's a lot of classic Doctor Who I haven't picked up yet!

March 6 is turning out to be the Make-Escapay-Jump-For-Joy Day as it not only is the release of Peter Pan: Platinum Edition, but is the date for the new classic Doctor Who DVD's that netty's already enjoying!

The Invasion (SRP $34.98 )
The Sontaran Experiment (SRP $19.98 )

http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=6588

I'm guessing, then, that we'll see "New Beginnings" (formerly "Return of the Master") sometime in June, though they'll likely be separate releases as well as the boxset.

It sucks you have to pay more for 2 disc releases, in the UK they're the same price as a single disc release. I actually got The Invasion for £10.89, and its <strike>RRP</strike> SRP is £19.99.

As for The Sontaran Experiment, its a SRP of £12.99 here, because its only 2 episodes (50 mins) and doesn't have as many extras on as a "normal" release.

Oh, I wouldn't pick up Mark of the Rani if I was you (but knowing you like "Campiness" and Soaps you may like it - Kate O'Mara from Dynasty is the Rani!)

At long last. The CD soundtrack of Murray Gold's score is coming - and it will be out in time for Christmas!

(Note: Neil Hannon is the lead singer with the Divine Comedy, and also sung "So Long and Thanks for all the Fish" on the HitchHikers' Guide to the Galaxy movie)
www.ZetaMinor.com wrote: Here are some details about the long-awaited Doctor Who soundtrack CD release, courtesy of Silva Screen...

- Release date is 4th December and catalogue number is SILCD1224

- This is the First release for any of the music including the new version of the Theme

- The two Neil Hannon songs were written for last year's Christmas Special The Christmas Invasion (Song For 10) and this year's Christmas Special The Runaway Bride to be shown on Christmas Day (Love Don't Roam). Neil Hannon did not perform the song in last year's Special but will do in this year's.

- Murray Gold's music will be selected cues from both the Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant seasons and is a mixture of light, ambient electronic cues and heavy, orchestral cues for the action sequences.

- The orchestral cues are performed by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales who are also performing much the same music in the Children In Need Concert on 19th November. The Crouch End Festival Chorus also feature on the CD.

- The booklet will contain detailed notes by the composer about the cues

- The initial print run will be a collectable limited edition containing a button badge exclusive to Silva Screen's release.

The cat is out of the bag. The Daleks return in S3. In a form and location you may not expect... 1930's New York!

Forbidden Planet a speciality sci-fi/comic store briefly had some of the toy specs for 2007 listed on their site (the spoilsports have taken it down now) and listed was:

1930's Art Deco Daleks

(There's also rumours of extras being cast as "Humanised Daleks" too on the Outpost Gallifrey discussion forum). Looks like Dalek Sec took a little time-jaunt back to the '30s when he escaped in Doomsday, and is still just as determined to resurrect the Dalek race!

Here's the remainder of the list in full:
Doctor Who 2007 Wave 1 Figures
Auton Double Pack
Captain Jack & Empty Child
Gold Dalek & Mutant Reveal
Rose & Robot Spiders
Slitheen & Space Pig

Doctor Who 2007 Wave 2 Figures
Clockwork Man A
Clockwork Man B
Cyberman with Gun Arm
Mickey & Rusty K-9
New Werewolf
Ood

Doctor Who 2007 Wave 3 Figures
Martha Jones

12" Action Figures
Clockwork Man
Empress of Racnoss
Judoon Trooper
Martha Jones
Novice Hame, Cat Nun
Ood
Face of Boe

In addition...

Battlepack with Cyberman
Doomsday Gift Set ( The Doctor, Black Dalek and Cyberman )
Genesis Ark Gift Set
Judoon Commander Voice Changer Helmet
At last! A Face of Boe! And Captain Jack and The Empty Child and Slitheen with Space Pig are must buys for me (well, actually, they're all "must buys" for me!)

Also today, the Sun newspaper (we love it), reported that a special Weakest Link episode is to be filmed featuring David Tennant, Freema Agyeman and a host of "heroes and villains" from the programme as one of the occasional Weakest Link Celebrity Specials. Being as Freema's character won't be introduced until the first episode of S3 (Smith and Jones) I doubt we'll see the quiz on TV for a long time.

Meanwhile, by final Big Finish audio adventure arrived yesterday. I don't think I'll be subscribing for another year, now Dr Who is back on TV. But over all my year's subscription was worthwhile.

The Runaway Bride Spoiler (well, more like teaser, as that's how it was presented) at the Children-In-Need Doctor Who Concert in Cardiff.
They premiered quite a long sequence from TRB involving the Bride trapped in a taxi being driven by one of the robot Santas. She knocks off the Santa mask to reveal what's underneath. The Doctor is meanwhile wiring up things in the TARDIS and bashing other bits, till he manages to materialise alongside the taxi on the motorway - keeping pace with it while urging her to jump. This is all watched with bemusement by some kids in the back of another car and other passengers who also urge her to jump.

Apparently this wasn't spoiling things too much as RTD said it was only around 10 minutes into the story.
It was a brilliant clip! The Doctor steering the TARDIS with a length of string, while he leans out of the doors encouraging Donna to leap out of the taxi & unboard the TARDIS. We get to see what the pilot fish look like under the masks as well. The Doctor shouting for Donna to jump while two kids sat in other cars on the road shout for her to jump as well. It was all round amazing. Fast, funny and some great lines.

"Jump!"
"I'm wearing a wedding dress!"
"Yes and you look lovely."

(Or words to that effect.)
I gues this must be what RTD calls "The greatest chase sequence ever!" and it does sound exciting, thrilling, funny and original all at the same time! It's also something that the "classic" series could never do with its budget.

Regarding the return of the "pilot fish" Robot Santas from The Christmas Invasion remember that story took place at Christmas 2006 (i.e. this year) as Rose and the Doctor jumped ahead 12 months in Aliens of London.

It appears The Runaway Bride is also taking place at Christmas 2006 (I understand references to the year are deliberately placed in the script), this the new series this coming Easter will once more begin in the "present" with Smith and Jones.

Here's a few captures and an explantion of the "In Vision" commentaries. I've chosen "The Girl in the Fireplace" out of the two I have seen (this and The Christmas Invasion) as it demonstrates the advantage of the format better.

The commentary participants are shown in a perspective distorted rectangle in the lower right corner of the screen. I notice it seems to be "4:3" safe, in that a wide space it left to the right of the insert. I wonder if the episodes play in 4:3 mode if your DVD player is set-up that way?

Here's seven captures from the commentary. You can click on them to make them bigger:

Image
The pre-credits sequence and the participants have just settled down.
Image
I had to include the snog just for Escapay. What you may not know is since filming this episode David and Sophia have become an item in real life. I love how David is casually drinking from his beer at this moment! "Yeah, I snogged Sophia. So what? I do it all the time!"
Image
Aaagh! The box covers Billie's breasts! Curse you DVD editor!
Image
Sophia is enjoying her big dramatic speech!
Image
Sophia is amazed by the effect of the Doctor jumping through the mirror (I get the impression she has never seen the episode before)
Image
Image
Both of these shots show how emotional Sophia gets when watching the ending. She's always dabbing at her eyes, or playing with her hands.

I did think the "in vision" commentaries would be just gimmicks, but they do actually help to show how the participants are feeling, which isn't always clear in audio only commentaries. Sophia for example, says very little in comparison to Phil and David - I get the impression she has not seen the complete episode before and also that see feels the other two know more than she does. But the in-vision commentary shows how much she is enjoying the episode and also how emotional she feels at the end. Something you would never know if you could only hear her voice and comments. In fact, she would probably come across as a bit "stand off-ish" if you could only hear her.

I am still a little upset that the web commentaries aren't included as well. The Girl in the Fireplace's is well worth downloading and listening to. But, I must admit, from what I've heard of the new commentaries, they're probably just as good.

OH MY GOD!

That looks freakin' awesome!

I'm glad to see that it will be a comic performance from Catherine Tate as opposed to as 'straight' performance! I notice her voice is similar to her 'I dunno' character. ;)

Love the other caps as well and the "In-Vision" commentary idea. Commentaries always seem much more intimate/personal when you can see who's commenting.

Good news for Captain Jack fans. John Barrowman reveals he's back for three episodes of S3 (more than the one or two we previously hoped for)

http://www.syfyportal.com/news.php?id=3008
“I will be in [season] three of ‘Doctor Who,’” he said excitedly. “I will be in the last three episodes of four episodes, and the scripts are being written as we speak because I just got a text from Russell [T. Davies] telling me that he’s finishing the script that Jack returns to ‘Doctor Who.’”
I have a feeling Captain Jack's return will be the "double booked" episode this year - meaning as with Love & Monsters last year it will be filmed as other Doctor Who episodes are being filmed so will have little involvement of the Doctor or Martha.

Let's hope he's back to his carefree adventurer ways, and not the prick he tends to be in Torchwood. But... Uh-Oh
“You will never see, you will never have ‘Who’ crossing over into ‘Torchwood,’” Barrowman exclaimed. “‘Doctor Who’ is for children, is a base for family viewing and children. ‘Torchwood’ is not. The only person that will cross at this point will be Jack going back and forth, because Jack has a different persona in ‘Doctor Who’ as he does in ‘Torchwood,’ if that makes any sense. He’s darker because of his circumstances and he’ll change again when [he] comes in, or he might be darker when he comes back in ‘Doctor Who.’
The article also mentioned his upcoming civil partnership with his gay partner.

Woohoo, Captain Jack is back! This makes me look even more forward to Fall 2007! Lordy, I wish I lived in England, if only to get Doctor Who earlier than I would here!

BBC Christmas Schedule Press Information:
Doctor Who
Award-winning comedy actress Catherine Tate and Sarah Parish star alongside David Tennant in a special Christmas edition of the time-travelling adventure.

Bride-to-be Donna mysteriously vanishes as she prepares to marry her boyfriend Lance in a glittering ceremony on Christmas Eve. She suddenly appears, to her complete astonishment, in the Tardis with the Doctor.

As the Tardis races to get to the church on time, the Doctor and Donna are closely watched by the sinister figure of The Empress of Racnoss from her throne in her spaceship. It soon becomes clear that Donna is the key to an ancient alien plan to destroy the Earth.

David Tennant plays the Doctor, Catherine Tate plays Donna and Sarah Parish plays The Empress of Racnoss.

The Sarah Jane Adventures
Elisabeth Sladen – Doctor Who's former sidekick – is back as Sarah Jane Smith in a brand-new, fast-paced children's drama, created by Russell T Davies and from the makers of Doctor Who. The Sarah Jane Adventures ensures that children never look at fizzy drinks in the same way again...

Sarah Jane is fascinated by Bubbleshock, a strangely addictive organic drink that is taking the world by storm. She is almost oblivious to the arrival of her new neighbour, Maria, a young girl starting a new life with her father.

Maria becomes intrigued by the strange goings on at Sarah Jane's house but, before she can investigate, she's whisked away by her new friend, Kelsey, to the brightly coloured, but sinister, Bubbleshock factory.

As Sarah Jane tries to find out what the mysterious Mrs Wormwood is doing at the factory, Maria and Kelsey embark on a tour which leads them into the path of a monstrous creature and a strange young boy with no name or past.

When Sarah Jane and Maria discover the secret ingredient of Bubbleshock, they realise they are the only ones who can stop Mrs Wormwood and her evil plans for the human race.

Maria is played by Yasmin Page, Kelsey by Porsha Lawrence Mavour, Mrs Wormwood by Samantha Bond and the young boy/Luke by Thomas Knight.
Sarah Jane's story sounds a little childish, but it is for the kiddies. A sort of Sarah and the Chocolate Factory? Meanwhile the festive Doctor Who sounds light and fluffy. Just right for Christmas Day viewing.

Meanwhile, another department of the BBC has issued a press release too... the covers for the New Beginnings boxset in January

Image

The BBC Doctor Who Website has a in-depth listing of the extras (and the 3 disc slipcase, which is pleasingly similar to "The Beginning" one).

More 2007 Casting News

I'm jumping for joy. The Wonderful Jessica Stevenson has been cast in the new series. Jessica is an amazing comic actress (as well as a renounded writer in her own right) and her appearance in 2007 is nice being as Simon Pegg was in the 2005 series. Both of the creators/actors of Spaced are now part of Doctor Who! (Oh, I see she's in the next Harry Potter film too)

This is confirmed on her talent agency's website
http://www.pfd.co.uk/clients/stevenje/a-act.html
Jessica co-wrote and co-starred in two series of SPACED on Channel 4. Spaced was nominated as Best Sitcom and Jessica won the Best Female Comedy Newcomer Award at the British Comedy Awards 2000. The 2nd series was nominated at the 2001 International Emmy Awards. Jessica was nominated for Best Actress at the 2003 BAFTA Awards for her performance in TOMORROW LA SCALA. Her performance in THE NIGHT HERON at the Royal Court was nominated for Best Performance in a Supporting Role at the 2003 Olivier Awards.
It appears that she is playing a character called Joan, in the Paul Cornell 2-parter, which is strongly rumoured to be a reworking of his Virgin New Adventures book Human Nature. (And its one of the best Doctor Who novels ever published!)

Possible Spoilers

In the novel, the Doctor wipes his mind and uses nonotechnology to become "human", so that he can experience first hand what it is like to be human, including feeling human emotions. During his time as a human he sets himself up as a teacher at an English Boarding School. His companion is given the means of restoring him to being a Time Lord again, and strict instructions not to disturb him until a prearranged date, when she will restore his mind and body. While being a human, the Doctor falls in love with the school nurse... Joan.

Of course, things go wrong, but even without his TimeLord powers or encyclopedic knowledge he is able to stop a group of aliens from stealing the means to become Time Lords themselves and seeking a terrible revenge on his home planet of Gallifrey. But not with out him having to make a number of sacrifices first... including the biggest sacrifice the Doctor has ever made...

Just for a bit of fun, I'd thought I'd post the sales for the recently released The Invasion from Steve Roberts of the Doctor Who Restoration Team:
It sold 13,000 copies in week one and another 3,000 in week two. So it's done good business, but not spectacular. For comparison, 'Genesis of the Daleks' did 17,000 in week one and was at 30,000 within about a month.
16,000 copies in 2 weeks. Yet even though the sales are so small, the 2 disc set managed to include the following:

* 2 especially animated episodes in Flash from Danger Mouse studio Cosgrove Hall
* The same two episodes having considerable soundtrack restoration, being taken from cassette tape recordings from 1969!
* Extensive Audio and Video restoration on the other 6 episodes
* A Commentary track on all 8 25 minute episodes
* A subtitled information track on all 8 25 minute episodes
* A 50 minute documentary on the making of the story, including interviews with most of the surviving cast and crew
* A 10 or so minute documentary on the animation process
* A 10 or so minute documentary on fans who cassette taped the show in the 60s
* A Picture Gallery on the animation designs
* Two trailers
* A Picture Gallery of the story and recording
* Narration Links from the VHS release to cover the two lost episodes

Keep that in mind every time somebody says its not worth Disney sourcing extras or restoration on any of their DVD releases. All Disney DVD releases will sell 100 times a BBC Doctor Who release.

Oh no! They're changing the BBC Classic Doctor Who DVDs

A rather long post from Outpost Gallifrey

2Entertain seem to want to make the classic releases appeal to fans of the new series more; the commissioning of the extras is now under 2Entertain's purview, although the RT will still be working on some of the features. This possibly boils down to a less "serious" approach and more interactivity (whatever that means).

Lots of interesting questions there. Several of which have been replied to in the Zeta Minor thread (edited it to the more pertinent points raised by Oc):

Whereas the contents of a disc were previously completely planned and commissioned from within the RT, from April or thereabouts you'll see a changeover to discs that are planned and commissioned by Dan. It will be interesting to see if people notice a difference... Dan's very keen that the classic series releases should be able to appeal to the new series audience, so I suspect we'll be seeing discs which are a little less earnest, more interactive and more "fun" than those that us old gits in the RT produce.

We're still looking after episode restoration and ensuring that all the disc assets are delivered to the technical standards that we always aspire to.

Dan Hall isn't really a "new broom", he's been our commissioning editor for the last year. However, he's the first CE we've worked to who is actually a Doctor Who fan. Previously we've worked to CE's who have basically given us a budget and told us when to deliver - and in most cases haven't even bothered to watch any of the material that was being put out under their responsibility. Dan is a lovely bloke and very pro-active - and quite rightly has taken the stance that as CE he's ultimately responsible for what goes out. He is, in fact, merely doing the job he's being paid to do rather than let a load of freelancers dictate the package contents. He's a big fan of the work we've done and has gone out of his way to support us and to fight our corner for us. Quite rightly though, he has his own feelings about the direction he feels the discs should be taking. Remember, the classic series releases sell a tiny fraction of the new series releases, so anything that Dan can do to make them more accessible will ultimately be of benefit to everyone.

I think there will be changes, but I'm convinced that the standards will remain as high as ever. Everyone involved is aware that our discs are considered the benchmark that all archive TV releases are measured against and nobody is interested in changing that!

I have every confidence in Dan and the featurette producers to ensure that the hiqh quality of the releases will be upheld. I think we *will* see changes in the overall content of the discs.

The only real differences between the old regime and the new, is that previous commissioners at 2|entertain were not Dr Who fans, so they relied entirely on the RT for guidance as regards what stories should be released, and what features etc. should be commissioned for each release. Daniel is a fan and knows the subject, so although he is still given guidance by the team, the final decision is now his.

The principal personnel dealing with the picture and sound restoration have not changed, probably because it's very specialized and there is likely nobody who could do the job to the same standard. That's not true of feature production, so there will be some new people getting involved in the next year or so.
Oh no! The BBC Doctor Who DVDs are, without a doubt, the best archive TV releases on the market anywhere in the world today. See my post above this one for reasons why. I hope this doesn't result in "dumbing down" after all, the extras on the New Series Boxsets pale into insignificance compared to the Classic Who releases (and of course the vanilla discs of the new series which "sell so well" don't even have any extras!).

I think its a mistake to try and make Classic Who appeal to an audience who only know the New Series - to use a Disney metaphor, its like getting kids who only like The Lion King to watch and appreciate Walt's Alice cartoons. The Classic series is fundermentally different in tone, style, pace and of course effects.

To end this post on a more cheerful note I have the following brief previews of the Christmas specials from this month's Doctor Who Magazine:

Doctor Who: The Runaway Bride
Monday 25th December BBC1
In a Nutshell:
"Mr and Mrs Geoff Noble request the pleasure of your company at the marriage of their daughter, Donna to Mr Lance Bennett at St Mary's Church, Chiswick on 24 December 2007..." And then the impossible happens: the bride vanishes. An ancient evil from the Dark Times has awoken and it is hungry. Unless the Doctor can get Donna to the church on time, the people of Earth will be Christmas lunch...
Quote, Unquote:
Donna: Thanks for nothing Mr Spaceman! I'll see you in court!

The Sarah Jane Adventures: Special
Christmas Fortnight BBC1 (strongly rumoured to be New Year's Day 4:50pm)
In a Nutshell:
When her parents divorce, Maria Jackson moves in with her dad, across the street from the "local lunatic", who - rumour has it - talks to crystals in the park, and hangs out with monsters from outer space! Is Sarah Jane Smith as bonkers as she seems? Why does the sinister Mrs Wormwood want her dead? And what exactly is "Bane", the secret ingredient in the new Bubble Shock energy drink that sweeping the nation?
Quote, Unquote:
Sarah Jane: The people I fight have plans, and weapons, but I don't. It's what makes me different.

I've only have a quick scan through the new Doctor Who Magazine, but it seems to be a cracking issue again. (Jackie makes her comic strip debut! - But next issue is the 10th Doctor and... The Brigadier in the comic strip!)

Finally www.doctorwhonews.com is back up and running, and has far more news and information than I can ever post on this thread.

I've just read the Play.Com "blurb" for the New Beginnings boxset. And it's... done in an interesting style.
This cracking three-disc DVD boxset comprises 'The Keeper of Traken', 'Logopolis' and 'Castrovalva' - adventures that saw both the return of the Doctor's arch-enemy Master, plus the transition from Tom Baker's Doctor to Peter Davison's. Prepare for not one but two new companions, killer statues, the slow destruction of the Universe, cunning disguises, big beards, recursive occlusion and stick-on celery. What a combination! Packed with more special features than the good Doctor could fit in the Tardis this one is a right little belter!
Now that, according to my calculations Love & Monsters has aired in the US, I can post these:

See what on the cover of newspaper the Absorbaloff was reading in Love & Monsters? Political problems, most likely the concequence from the Doctor's actions in The Christmas Invasion. Ministers resigning. The government unable to rule... And a mysterious "Saxon" gaining popularity...

I have it on good authority (it's even mentioned in the Love & Monsters podcast commentary that the newspaper cover is important for S3) that Saxon is the "theme word" for the 3rd season (like "Bad Wolf" and "Torchwood" were for S1 and S2)

I was a bit disappointed with "Love and Monsters". Having initially missed its 8 pm airing (and forgetting to set the VCR), I had to wait until the midnight one, so between 9 and 12, I was watching some bonus features from the Star Trek DVDs (they really need to make a more bonus-packed edition of The Motion Picture, btw. 3 featurettes amounting to 56 minutes is paltry now compared to the exhaustive featurettes we've gotten since Star Trek IV).

Anyways, back to Who. I was watching it and while I like the whole "other people obsessed with the Doctor" aspect, I really didn't like how it was more about them and less about the Doctor.

On the plus side, it did give more material for Jackie, and was a hoot to see Moaning Myrtle as Ursula...then as Ursula the block of cement.

Still, the episode was below what I expected and wanted in a Doctor Who episode.

Netty, according to DVDTimes the next release for Doctor Who after the New Beginnings Boxset will be Sylvester McCoy's Survival, coming April 3, 2007. :D
