Are you shure about this? I mean, for example, it seems strange that if all the copies of "Finding Nemo" sold out, Disney would not produce new copies to meet the demand.
That is what happens when the title goes on moratorium... Even if there is demand, Disney will not produce these titles anymore.

And we do have the moratoruim release window here in Brazil... Sometime ago, Disney even announced that several movies were going back to the vault, like "Mulan", "Pinocchio", "Tarzan", "Beauty and the Beast"...

Since they are taking "Fantasia 2000" out of the shelves, I think "Dinossaur" and "The Emperor's New Groove" may be the next to go into the vault.

What i know:

The ppl from disney brasil told me: they produce an specific quantity of discs, but this number can be raised if the demand be too big.

Let me tel an example, our frists dvds, like pinocchio, lion king 2, tarzan, mulan and peter pan is an example of that, they asks for the factory produce 100 000 copies (lket´s supose it), Tarzan solds a lot and they asks for another 20 000 extras copies, but peter pan does not have the same demmand, so, you can easily find it in any dvd store today, even it being a release from 1999/2000.

I realy doný know about these moratoriums, disney never annuced it because they don´t work with the moratorium system, they let the stores sells the dvd until it end, different of the countries that really have moratoriums and vault, there they go to the stores and remove all the dvds that were not sold.

OK

Well, they don't recall the DVDs in the other countries... They simply don't produce the titles anymore.

Yeah, they don't make a fuss out of the moratorium thing like they do in the USA, but sometimes they announce that they are taking some DVDs to the vault. But the general public don't notice it.

In all rules have an exception, so the rule in the usa and majority of countries is: remove the dvds from the stores! but of course some stores run from that rule and stock some dvds.

And these annouces can not be considered because disney brasil currentily are not giving that anounces, even becase isnot them that cares with the distribution of the dvds, this is an work that the factory of the dvd do.

OK?

The dvds here is released in a specific quantity (for example, 1 milion of copies) and it only vanish from the stores when that quantity is over.

Because that, you still can find some releases from 2000 in the stores.

That must be nice :) That way I guess if you are unsure about something you still have a chance to get it. I wish I had purchased some of the dvds before they were gone such as the ultimate toy box and disney treasures, but at the time I wasn't able to purchase dvds with college and all, so now I have to wait for them to be re-released or find them on a secondary market. But then again, the bad side would be if something were really popular what if it sold out in a week or something? I know that when I went to buy nemo the day it came out, I got to wal-mart at 9am and already half their stock of nemos were gone! :o

The brazilian ppl doesn´t have a hurry in bought it dvds, so, a dvd sold out in the frist day in the stores is pratically impossible.

And when a dvd has a big demand, they ask for extras discs for the factory.

Just for you have an idea, the frist order of discs of "O Rei Leão / The Lion King" still not sold out in the stores ( is good to remeber that disney brazil will ask for extras discs of this movie even because there is a problem with the portuguese subtitling in the current version, so the will make a "recall" to the ppl that want the corrected version.)

OK

Isn't the question what features can they take off or split in to mini-documentaries based on the woeful B&tB and LK platinums? :)

As for the Lion King, everything I have read indicates this will be going out of print in late 2005 (ie. Two years after its release) as it the plan for all Platinum editions from this point on.

I need to get Sleeping Beauty, Lady and the Tramp 2, and the Fantasias fast! I think I can live without The Jungle Book 2.

Although L&T2 and JB2 will probably be getting a SE release in the next few years...

I already have the two Fantasias and Sleeping Beauty. But should I bother getting Lady and the Tramp II, The Jungle Book 2, or 101 Dalmations II? Some sequels at least offer some entertainment and I'd hate to have to wait X many years to get them again. So anyone strongly believe I should bother getting these sequels?

Yes, you should get Lady and the Tramp 2, The Jungle Book 2 and 101 Dalmations because all three are the best sequels Disney made.
Also Disney might re-relase them between 7-10 years.
If you want to wait that long.

Although Sleeping Beauty is one of the greatest disney classics, i cannot believe they put out the first two-disc set, it is completely unnecessary if they are going to have a platinum edition, I hope they aren't expecting blockbuster sales on the Platinum edition, how much more could they add? and they can't boast a newly restored edition because its already been restored!!

What causes a film to go to the vault?

Post by Ballzo »

While I was out today to pick up Alice in Wonderland SE, I saw the Black Cauldran and grabed that as well. When I opened it there was a battery coupon inside that expired the 31st of december 2001. I didnt realize that it has been out that long, so it got me thinking.... This has been out for awhile and has yet to be sent to the vault but Sleeping Beauty has been out a few months and it about to be sent away. So my question is what does it take for a film to be sent away to the vault? :?

Most Disney films go to the vault so that a new generation of people buys it ten or more years later because they didn't have it before.

Also because Disney wants to make more money when the titles get out of the vault.

Sleeping Beauty was only out four months and went to the vault because later in the future (2007-2010?) a Platinum Edition of Sleeping Beauty will come out.
Platinum Lion King will be in the vault in 2005.
While not so popular titles remain available (The Black Cauldron, The Fox and the Hound, The Great Mouse Detective, Oliver & Company (Special Edition) etc.)

So only the most popular titles go to the vault faster (Lion King, Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs etc.)

As far as the vault goes they tend to send the more popular films into the vault alot sooner than those that are not as well known or watched. Sleeping beauty I feel they moved it back way to quick but I think they did that to try and push the sales up alot more up front. As for The Black Cauldron I am not sure if it has been put into the vault or not but I don't think it has I beleive it has been on shelves since October of 2000 this was one of my first DVD purches and most likely because it is not one that really drives sales they will continue to sell it gradually. But even though a movie goes back to the vault alot of times you will still be able to find it because untill they are all sold off the stores shelves they are still for sale. But the longer you wait the less likely you are to find it.

You are exactly right. And I agree with you completely. It seems that way to me also.
