The Frog Prince gets a sex change?
Does anyone else here have a problem with "The Frog Princess"? Did Disney just do that because they assume it was a fairy tale more girls would like, and they wanted to make the main character one that girls would identify with? I would much rather have them animate "The Frog Prince", because it's the original story and the classic films never changed the fairy tales as much as the main character's sex and the title. I think a prince is fine because if they wanted to make sure girls liked it(since it might be more marketable to them), they could always make the story more about the princess who breaks the spell. And if they would concentrate more on the prince, I could really see some funny frog battling scenes with giants and ogres on his way to find a princess to kiss him. Imagine his funny attempts to get the girl(lots of times it is funnier when a guy is trying to get a girl), and how especially funny it would be since he's a frog. I don't have a problem with Disney twisting the fairy tales as they always have(The Little Mermaid's ending, for example), but not as much as this...it looks like the chance for it to be a classic fairy tale is shot. A twist this big is not in the ways of the classics.

"...,he’s approved production of two short films to be produced in hand-drawn animation (and one of them will bring back to the big screen one of the studio’s most successful short-format stars) thus creating both a production pipeline for one of animation’s most rewarding forms of entertainment and a kind of artists’ gym for getting into shape and getting ready to tackle what will doubtless be the glorious and triumphant return of the Disney of old. This is similar to the R & D attitude Pixar has toward short films, and one that Walt himself believed in right up until he died."
This was as we know the main intention with the Silly Symphonies; use the shorts as a training ground for the animators, and use the experiences they got in the features. But what character are they going to bring back to the big screen? It sounds like Mickey Mouse, but also Oswald was big back in the early days, and now when he's back it would be interesting to see a new Oswald cartoon (and to be honest, I havn't seen any old either).
One of the biggest problems with CGI movies these days is in my opinion that there is too much focus on talking animals whith a "cool" attitude. It's like if the music industry should ignore almost all the different music genres, and only produce standard hip-hop.
The Frog Princess sounds interesting. I know they say it is an american tale, but still, I once saw an old russian animated tale about a Frog Princess. Maybe they were inspired by that one.
