As much as I enjoyed the short, somehow I couldn't find myself crying over it. The tale is much more depressing because, although she's assumed to be a homeless child by the average viewer in the short, it reveals that she has a home, only her stepfather will beat her if she hasn't sold the matchsticks. Also, having no words really takes away from the experience for me, personally. One of the reasons I don't like Fantasia.

It was such a buatiful and emotional short. I loved every minute of it especially the bittersweet/sad ending.

this was an awesome short. I had never read about the original matchgirl tale, so I had no idea what was coming. I just knew that it was shocking to see from disney (from people who saw it at the mermaid premiere).
when I actually saw the ending, I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I was kinda in denial. "what? she cant die. she cant be dead. they wouldn't do that. ahh! see? shes just fine...oh wait....wow." that was pretty much my thought process exactly.

I wish we could see more shorts that didn't make it into fantasia 3.
does anyone know if this is final one that was produced for it?

"One By One" can be found on The Lion King II: Simba's Pride (the two-disc edition), and "Destino" is supposed to come out in the Legacy Collection series sometime this year. Don't know where "Lorenzo" is going to end up, though it would make sense to make it a bonus on the Destino DVD set.

The BBC has a live action short of "The Little Match Girl" that will tear your heart out. If you ever find it, or get a chance to view it, please do. You will see what I mean. Roger Daltrey is in it, and I don't know the little girl name who plays 'the match girl', but she will break your heart. It is just 30 minutes long, but it is the finest 30 minutes I have ever seen.

Most of the people I know haven't bothered to watch this animated short on The Little Mermaid PE

Whoa, really? Knowing TLM was going to be one the TLM DVD was a big factor in making the decision to buy it at the release. (hmmm, we need another acronism for TLM...)
I absolutely love this short and it deserves to win the Oscar.

THe song is not from the musical, but from the CD Rhytms Of The Pridelands. I agree it doesn't fit in well with classical music, but it's a very entertaining short. It'd be hard to find a classical peace that goes with African images

There should have been a section devoted to Little Match Girl on the DVD like Pixar has devoted a sectioon to their shorts on their recent DVDs.


What I would have liked to have seen on the DVD is all the stuff on the cancelled Hans Christian Anderson film since it pertained to the Walt era Little Mermaid featurette and Little Match Girl was developed for that back then too. I think there was an episode of Disneyland about Hans Christian Anderson or it had a segment about him where it told his story through limited animation.


By the way, this HCA film Walt wanted to do is how the Danny Kaye version came to be. Walt was going to do a co production with MGM but he lost interest and Samuel Goldwyn kept waiting and waiting but Walt drug his feet so he finally just made it without Walt. The Disney version would have incorporated animated sequences of the fairy tales into the life of Anderson, somewhat like George Pal’s Brother’s Grimm film. I’d love to have seen some of this on the Little Mermaid DVD.

yes I knew about one by one already. but that's why I asked if this was the last one, because one by one was released a while ago.
I have the youtube version in my favorites. I wish I could see it in higher quality without having to buy the lion king 2 dvd though. I didn't care enough for it to buy it.

yes it was. the theme you might notice here is that these shorts are intended to be about cultures from all over the world. the idea is that music brings the world together. (that's not the exact wording I originally read, but that's the get gist of it)

Just like how the animation style can change the music style can change as well. So for me "One by One" always fit that mold.

"The Little Matchgirl" is by far one of my favorite animated shorts that I've seen. After seeing it, I went back to my Lion King 2 dvd and watched "One by One and" now I REALLY wish that Disney would've have continued with the 3rd installment of Fantasia.

I was very much against the idea of Fantasia 2006 (I felt it was too soon after Fantasia 2000), until I saw the shorts. Why, whý didn't they finish it? (Okay, I know why, but I want a better reason<_<)

They should have not done Fantasia 2000 and just waited until all the other sequences were done so they would have had closer to a 90 minute long film. If we ever get the rest I hope someone splices them into that film where they belong.

By the way, Is the BBC Little Matchgirl anything like the BBC Snow Queen? I saw the last 5 minutes of Snow Queen on PBS last month and as soon as I can I’m buying the DVD because it was so good.

True, but up until this point, "Fantasia" has always been wordless music (what my Musical Premiere professor would call "art music"). By that logic, "Make Mine Music" and "Melody Time" could be considered the same as "Fantasia", which I don't think they are.

Really enjoyed the short ... just like I really enjoyed One by One, which leads me to the conclusion I probably would have liked Fantasia 2006 had it been finished. Not really a fan of both Fantasia and Fantasia 2000. Granted they both look fantastic, the animation put to music really makes it almost magical at times ... but somehow the complete package just doesn't work for me. I personally think it's because the majority of the musical pieces selected for the movies are not exactly my favourites (given a few exceptions).

Am I wrong in thinking that there was a choir in the Ave Maria sequence? Besides vocal music predates instrumental. I just thought it was a wonderful idea to have something more vocal. And if the point of the next Fantasia was actually to demonstrate music from across the world, it'd be impossible to have it all be what's considered "classical" since that's all from the western world. Eurpope in particular.

this was such a beautiful short. i loved the book when i was a little girl and i was so happy to see it on the DVD, and done so magically. made me cry, and im glad, because the book always made me cry.

Still licking his wounds from being dismissed from “Kingdom of the Sun,” Roger Allers next project would be his last for Disney. “Don Hahn came to me and said ‘Would you like to do an animated short about The Little Matchgirl?’ It had always been a very moving story to me. It’s one I read to my kids and never got through with a dry eye. And the idea to do it all with music with no dialogue was really interesting.” Originally intended for the third Fantasia film, the first piece of music Roger worked with was disliked by Roy E. Disney. “Honestly, I would do anything for Roy because I loved him, he was our hero. Don Hahn found the piece by Borodin, it was called ‘Nocturne,’ it was a beautiful piece and we got the Emmerson String Quartet. We had almost no budget to make these shorts on.” To make the short, Roger had to borrow animators who were between assignments, typically just for short periods of time. “It was very economical, but it had to be very creative.”

I'm glad the short did end up being made after all. I've always thought it was beautifully done, and I usually end up watching it whenever I watch TLM.
