magicalwands - because all Pixar related stuff is in California Adventure, A Bugs Life, character appearances, Turtle Talk with Crush, A Bugs Life 3D.

Well I guess the Toy Story stuff is in Disneyland but California Adventure is nicknamed Pixar Land.

Also, they already had the track there from the total failure that was Superstar Limo.

Why not at California Adventure? Disneyland has a handful of locations were new attractions could go especially small ones like this, but DCA needs family oriented attractions a lot more.

Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters is at Disneyland.

And Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage is opening at Disneyland next year.

Yeah, at this point, I think Disney really needs to build on DCA. I'm on the record as loving DCA, but perhaps because I've not been to many theme parks. Yes, it is very 'carbon copy', but there are still a number of unique things to do there. The Grizzly Rapids and Tower of Terror wouldn't have had room anywhere else, so it is good to see a dedicated area for them. A few more rides like Monsters Inc, and DCA may just rid themselves of the reputation that people (unfairly) dump on it.

By the same token, I think Disneyland has a classic feel to it that would be spoiled by trying to cram too many things in. Over the last few years, things HAVE been replaced there, but can you honestly name any of the big rides you would have like to have seen disappear so a 'new' kiddie ride could slot in there?

Oh, and sordouble-post, but this just in:

Tokyo Disneyland to get Monsters, Inc. ride

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/orl ... -headlines

"The Oriental Land Co. today announced a new ride-style attraction opening at Tokyo Disneyland in 2009.

The ride is based on Monsters, Inc., a movie from Pixar Animation Studios. Last week, the Walt Disney Co. announced an agreement to purchase Pixar for $7.4 billion in an all-stock deal aiming to re-establish a tradition of creative and technological innovation that began with founder Walt Disney 80 years ago.

According to a press release from Oriental, guests will be able to participate in a game of hide-and-seek at the Monsters, Inc. building with Boo, Mike, Sulley and other characters from the movie. The attraction will be located in Tomorrowland.

The company also said the Fantasyland attraction Cinderella Castle Mystery Tour will be permanently closed as of April 5. The tour opened in 1986 as a "walk-through" attraction. Plans for the vacated space have not been announced."

So it looks as though this is the new 'Buzz Lightyear Cut N Paste' ride.

I love Dark Rides of various kinds from the Fantasyland ones to the Tower of Terror.

Far from the worst, IMO. Nothing groundbreaking, but one that you need to repeat a few times to catch all the hidden details and gags.

Tower of Terror is not a dark ride.

Amusement Today magazine considers it one because the MGM TOT ranked as one of the Top 5 dark rides for 2004 or/and 2005.

The Darkride and Funhouse Enthusiasts (DAFE) http://www.dafe.org describe a darkride as follows-

"A darkride requires an enclosed structure. It may have open areas, but the majority of the ride remains in the building. In general, the interior is dark or dimly lit. The lighting that is used could be spotlights triggered by the passing ride vehicle, black light effects, or low-level general illumination. The ride system uses a passenger-carrying vehicle that is guided by a track, waterway, or other method that follows a seemingly random path. The darkride depends mainly on scenery to produce the ride experience. Scenery can include simple pop up or boxed ”gags” or “tricks”, stationary or animated figures, paintings, complex animatronic scenes, and special effects. Sound effects also play an important role in most darkrides. These may range from simple horns and buzzers triggered by the passing ride vehicle, to isolated sound bites for each gag, or to a complex musical score complete with narration".

Following this criteria, The Tower of Terror could be classified as a "Dark ride". It is enclosed and certainly dimly lit. It does have a vehicle that carries the passenger along past several animated pieces (starfield, mirror, various animation). The big drop at the end is the big payoff.

It is not a traditional dark ride in the sense of riding past a storybook setting and seeing it play out. It does, however, HAVE a story and you are (mostly) in the dark. In this sense, Pirates of the Caribbean and Haunted Mansion are dark rides, although far more advanced than Snow White's Scary Adventures or Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, for example. The thing counting against ToT - at least the DCA version - is that it opens up at the top to give you a view of the park. This takes you out of the 'dark' and into the 'light', which may disqualify it.

Even so, I'd consider it a 'dark thrill ride' rather than a pure dark ride in the traditional sense.

Was that longwinded or what? :D
