5 1/2. The Average Disney Collector - "I'm the Average Collector, but also a Completist when it comes to anything Disney DVD related! All 44 Animated Classics will soon be mine! Mine, all mine!"
I'm surprised I didn't respond in this thread.
I want all the classics (save Chicken Little and the 1940s features). Also, I only buy movies that I know for sure that they're gonna get at least 3 spins on my DVD, and if it's a SE, I should be interested enough in the movie to check out its bonus features.

My thoughts exactly! I think I was studying for exams when this thread went up so I missed it. But yeah, I'm a 5 1/2. I really want all the Animated Classics AND Chicken Little, but it's hard to find the early releases now unless I get lucky at GameStop b/c that seems to be the only place I strike gold and those moments are few. Escapay was mean and pretended he found Fantasia Anthology for $34.99. He should be hit upside the head with a slab of meat.
Anyhow, I also don't want to collect all the Treasures. I'm not that much of a completist. I just want the ones I know I'll watch, like the Animated Classics and other stuff. My non-Disney movies are all movies I just love to watch again. Also, I'm so stingy when I spend my money so sometimes I might find something I'll want, but have doubts at the store and kick myself at home for not getting it.
Currently I am looking for Thumbelina. It used to be $5.50 at Target and I was too stingy to pay the 5 bucks! GAAHHHHH!!! Now they don't stock it anymore...at least our Target doesn't. Also I really want to get The Black Cauldron, Oliver and Company, Rescuers, and the Rescuers Down Under, but even some of those are hard to find at stores where they sell them at the SRP.
I love all genres (except horror), and love getting movies, but I am on a mission to get all Disney animated classics on DVD. And if I have a choice, no matter what title, I will own the 2-Disc edition.
I'm 5 1/2, the average Disney collector. I want all animated classics and that's my priority. After I finish that (in a millenium maybe), I may start collecting some other Disney related animation, or animation in general.
When it comes to cinema, I choose animation over live-action any day. However, that doesn't mean that I wouldn't be interested in collecting live-action films. The thing is...MONEY! Animation is always the priority, in my case, so most probably, my collection will always consist of that. First of all, I have to finish the collecting the Disney Classics. And now, with Blu-Ray, I think I just may have to start all over again...eventually.
I started collecting (if I remember correctly) from December 2003, starting with Mary Poppins Gold Classic Collection DVD (even if that is actually not one of the animated classics). It was a Christmas present from my brother.
So far (since Dec. 2003) I've collected about 20 DVDs. My father actually buys them for me, because I don't have any money of my own.
I'm number 7: "The Aficionado. - If I see a movie, and it amused or entertained me even the slightest bit, I'll make sure it's in my collection just in case I want to watch it. Sure, I've got my usual favorites, but I also collect movies with the intent of running a mini-DVD-rental store for my friends and relatives. I've got probably 300 or so movies, though I have probably seen only 115 of them more than once since I bought it."
I will have to make some distinctions though. First, I do not care to lend out my movies to friends and relatives. Showing movies to them at MY house or taking them over to their house to watch them, okay, but I have seen what other people do to DVDs and don't like to lend them. One relative of mine keeps asking to borrow my "Silly Symphonies Volume 1" and possibly other Disney Treasures. I DO NOT want to lend them to him, but, luckily, he hasn't ever actually come over to get them yet, he just keeps saying he needs to come borrow them sometime.
Secondly, I don't have a huge cash flow. I'm an illustrator just getting started (illustrating a graphic novel for a local writer right now). I'm also a writer myself, and sometimes I audition for stuff, but where I live there's not a lot of creative jobs out there and most of us artistic types are flipping burgers or folding shirts. Anyways, so I rarely have much cash to spend except when I get the occasional painting commission or something like that. Still, I've managed to grow a huge DVD collection over the years, partly because I love the 5.50 bins at Wal-Mart and 4 dollar sales at Circuit City and Best Buy. I also have gotten a lot of free ones by writing movie reviews. When I have money, since I really don't have an interest in dating around here (never met a cute girl that was actually single) and I don't drink, it usually goes either to my toy collection or my DVD collection. I do have certain priority DVDs of course, but when I see one at a good price that I even kinda like, I will often get it. Maybe because I know my priority DVDs tend to be pricey (for me at least), though I still get them eventually too. I also buy movies that I haven't even seen sometimes, just because they look interesting. Sometimes, this backfires, of course, but I'm a completist in the highest meaning of the word. I'm mainly a Disney completist, but if I could own a copy of every DVD out there, I would. I always prefer boxed sets if I can afford them, multi-disc editions, and whatever else, and I usually will pass on a DVD if I can't afford the deluxe edition to wait for when I can. I'm really annoyed lately, ever since they've started releasing single AND 2-disc sets, and only really putting the single-disc on sale during release week. I haven't been able to buy so many great movies because I'm holding out till when I can get the 2-disc (or more) editions: Phantom of the Opera, King Kong, Narnia... Sometimes, I'm lucky enough to be able to afford a 2-discer right when it comes out. With Batman Begins (although I really love that movie anyway), I snagged the 2-disc release that also came with the comic book in the slip case. I do get annoyed when I have to get a movie without the slipcover because they have disappeared from the stores (like Pocahontas 2-disc edition) or sent it to me without one in the mail. Also, while I hate double dipping because a more loaded release comes out, I always will (if I have the cash).
I would have sworn I posted in here... Maybe the forum was hacked, or had to be reset right about that time, or something...
Oh well...
5 1/2. The Average Disney Collector - "I'm the Average Collector, but also a Completist when it comes to anything Disney DVD related! All 44 Animated Classics will soon be mine! Mine, all mine!"
I am planning to get the Animated Classics when there are good special editions, the others can wait... However, sequels don't exist, to me! I plan to get all the WD Treasures, and other Special Editions...
6. The Completist - "I love all types of movies, especially franchises. But even if there are lesser movies in a franchise, I'll buy them, simply because I like to have a complete collection.
If I like the original movie, I will probably like the sequels somewhat, even if they are much worse movies.
7. The Aficionado - "If I see a movie, and it amused or entertained me even the slightest bit, I'll make sure it's in my collection just in case I want to watch it.
I plan to have a library of films that I can watch at any time, that should last a lifetime... #8 doesn't really apply to me, I like having the best edition of a film, and yes, I plan to own ALL episodes of ALL Star Trek Shows since I am a Trekkie (or Trekker...) I would also like at least 50-60% of the Criterions, and at that point, I might try to complete the collection since Criterions are probably better blind buys than other films... Yes, I have over 1000 DVDs, but I have been collecting since 2000, and many of my purchases have been great deals at pawn shops and other used stores, not to mention outrageous sales at Best Buy, etc., or online.
9. The Slipcover Fanatic - If a movie doesn't have a slipcover and originally came with a slipcover, I'm gonna hunt that slipcover down until I find it.
OK, ya caught me... I am very OCD when it comes to my collection. I want to have all the original packaging *FOR FILMS I LIKE* (not counting the strip on the top, or anything stupid like that...) I also want to make sure everything is in good shape, especially if I buy used. I am also distracted by shiny objects, so bonus items/pack-ins/exclusive discs/pre-order extras/etc., are all icing on the cake for me.
10. The favorite customer at BestBuy - "Everyone at BestBuy knows me by name since I have a weekly appointment there every Tuesday.
Yep, here I am again... They don't actually know me by name, but they recognize me... Of course, I don't buy as many things on release day, since I have to watch my spending... Right now, I am really focused on either limited edition/exclusive DVDs, box sets, trying to find a few OOP titles, or really amazing deals... Some generic film that is going to be easily available and even cheaper 6 months from now can wait.
Concerning Disney animated DVD's I'm the ultra completist. All releases and editions, no reserve.
PS. I know it hurts.

Like Escapay, I too have moved up from Average Collector to "The Aficionado" since first posting to this thread, with the same bonus feature requirements as before... I'll settle for a packed single-disc edition if the movie is unlikely to get an upgrade (usually, but never with movies I really love), but other than that it has to be 2 (or more)-disc
I really don't recognize myself entirely in any one of those categories - I guess I could be a mix of more of them. I've got a rather large collection (roughly 400-500), most of which are very carefully selected titles. I'm a completist only "here and there". I have my priorities.

Bonus features are important, but not as important as the movie itself. But if given the choice between a movie-only or a movie-with-bonus features DVD, I'll pick the latter. I've got about 100 movies to my name, many of them multi-disc."

I will buy DVDs of movies I enjoyed in theaters or have rented/seen on TV. ("if I see a movie, and it amused or entertained me even the slightest bit, I'll make sure it's in my collection just in case I want to watch it" fits me perfectly!) I'll only get multi-disc sets for the movies I really love. Double-dipping is reserved for top favorites and well-liked films that had crappy previous editions. I do have a completist streak, but I've been curbing it because I have yet to solve my shelf space crisis.
Though my collection is not that big (<a href="http://www.dvdaficionado.com/dvds.html? ... rz">174</a>), I have a lot more than my friends, who average about 10 - 30 DVDs. My dearest other half has jokingly referred to my house as "RST Video"<b>*</b> on several occasions.
I'm a 5 1/2, I guess. The problem with me is that I have some kind of a short attention span or something with collecting. Right now I'm in my Disney period, but this could easily change into a 50's epic period or something. I hope I'll stay into Disney long enough to collect more of the classics .
