Does Anyone Think Pirates Of The Carribbean 2 wont do well??
I voted a little too quick. I don't think that "Superman Returns" will definitely gross more at the box office than "Dead Man's Chest", but I do think that DMC will disappoint some people. I can't watch the trailer without thinking that it is going to be a cross between "Temple of Doom" and "Back to the Future 2". Seeing Davy Jones as a fishman with 'aqua-snakes' as a beard makes the character look more like an alien than a "fiend that presides over all the evil spirits of the deep". Plus, something that looked like Hammerhead from "Star Wars" is in one scene of the trailer. Maybe the title should have been "Jack Sparrow and the Curse of Mos Eisley's Cantina". Anyway, if it is a good film and does well, that's great! If it is a bad film and does well, that's scary.

Remember, when the first Pirates came out in 2003, it not only faced competition in the form of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, but the second weekend of Terminator 3 and Legally Blonde 2. At the time, Arnold Schwarzenegger was looking toward a life in politics and T3 was going to be his swan song to acting and Reese Witherspoon was coming off the hit movies Legally Blonde 1 and Sweet Home Alabama. And League was highly anticipated (whether or not it lived up to the expectations is something for you to decide). And let's remember, opening weekend isn't everything. Part of the reason Pirates did so well is that it hung around all summer, while movies like T3 and Legally Blonde 2 opened well, but faded away rather quickly.
I don't think having Superman open a week prior to Pirates is going to hurt Pirates. But I also don't think that Pirates 2 will out-perform its predecessor, because generally most sequels make less than their predecessors. So, I'm guessing about $260 million for Pirates 2, and actually about the same for Superman. Batman Begins, which came out last year, reached $200 million in the US and was considered a hit by all accounts. Superman should do a bit better than Batman, but I don't believe it will approach Spiderman numbers.

I also vote no, based on the fact that neither movie is remotely related to each other, the fact that Pirates gained an enormous following, dvd sales gained a larger audience for Pirates, and based on the Narnia/Kong experience. Pirates will not be competing with Superman for an audience in the long run, and even if it is, younger viewers are much more inclined towards Pirates than Superman (and Johnny Depp). Kong was expected to blow everything out of the water due to its historical claim to fame and high production values. Narnia swept in with a better movie and beat it out, proving that if a movie is good, it will beat the lesser competition without an already devoted audience. DVD sales were huge for Pirates and gained an entirely new audience after dvd release than the movie gained for itself in theaters. These new fans will be seeing the movie in theaters this time in addition to all those that loved it originally. Therefore, I conclude that Pirates will do better than the first Pirates movie and on par with if not better than Superman.

"Superman Returns" comes the week of July 4, and then "Pirates 2" comes the week after. Shouldn't be a problem. All the crazies will run to see "Superman" the first weekend and through the 4th of July hliday and then "Pirates 2" will make its debut and should do very well. Johnny Depp is a good box office commodity and no matter how good the movie is, the first weekend should be pretty good. Word of mouth about how good or 'bad' it is will spread and the second weekend will be the tell-all for the second in the "Pirates" trilogy.

The only way to watch movies - Original Aspect Ratio!!!!
