I've bought the gift box of the dvd today!!
It looks stunning with the golden book cover.
I'm glad this came out, I think the normal dvd cover doesn't match the movie at all.

I was very curious about the look of the film, as I've read so much about it. I have to say it looks beautiful, in general very classy.
You can tell they went back to the original negatives.
Not 4 different generations of the film, scanned again and again, and "photochemical processes" and "optical lens processes" like the classics that came out on dvd the past few years. And with a look that doesn't have anything to do with the year it came out originally (like Cinderella).

This Sleeping Beauty has color palettes that scream; "1950's"!!
And that's how it should be.
Old fashioned green colors, gold, deep old reds, and sometimes pale skins, this is how it was back then. You can really tell they went back to the original negatives. It looks like film again.
This 50's look is essential for the film I think.

You can tell they cleaned it up here and there and sometimes maybe a little too much.
There actually were 2 scenes where the colors seemed a bit unnatural to me. The scene where the fairies read the book with the dresses and decide wich one they are going to make and Briar Rose walks in.
Also the color of the pink dress (made with magic) seemed a bit over the top to me. It doesn't match the rest of the colors. And the scene when Aurora is hyponitised and she stands up, her hair glows too much. But other than that, a beautiful, old fashioned look.
So, oldfashioned and 50's can still look beautiful, natural and deep.
It doesn't have to be like Cinderella to fit modern times.

It was also interesting to see the original trailers on the bonus disc.
The 2nd trailer from 1959 actually looks like the film as it is now, but even a little bit more authentic.

I also love the restored soundtrack.
They did change some things, when Briar Rose is singing in the woods, and Philip is following the sound with his horse, they doubt to go left or right during one of her notes. Then they run to the right and she goes on with the note. They made this note extremely echoing. It does work, but it is changed. I always liked that note and now you can't hear it as well anymore.

Also after Philip stopped singing in "once upon a dream" I noticed some little changes in the orchestra, but this can be a result of changing volumes of instruments I suppose.

Well,Sleeping Beauty and Enchanted are my favorites after The Little Mermaid and Cinderella and The Nightmare Before Christmas after them.

I've watched the film again today and I noticed so many changes, it's really weird.

Especially changes in the soundtrack.
It has nothing to do with the original soundtrack!
So many things are shifted (lines, instruments) and many intones are different. A moment earlier or later on the music for example.
This is really weird. It's obvious that they remixed all the separate instruments and lines etc.
Als many changes in volumes and echoes, for example when aurora sings the high notes in the forest, suddenly a far away echoeing sound, also in the scene with the prince.
The gifts of beauty are completely different, on the previous dvd when the chorus sang their last word, you heard multiple "s"es for example, now that's gone. Also some instruments come out much more now and are shifted as well.
In the Once upon a dream sequence when Philip stops singing, suddenly there are these 2 strange chords.
There are also changes in the music when Aurora is hypnotised and walks to the spinning wheel.
Also a lot of spoken lines are placed a bit earlier or later on the backgroundmusic now.

I compared the image to all the other versions I have and it does look superior. It looks great.
But extremely different. I had no idea the difference was this big.

I like the new version but it's a completely different movie and experience. So I'll definitely keep the old version too, to be able to watch the film I grew up with, as it's just a different film.

Well, the mix (I assume you're talking about the new 5.1 or 7.1 tracks) was done from scratch, so small differences could occur. The original 4.0 track is also available, and that one should be fine, I think.

I
i noticed it too! as someone who memorize the movie by ear and eye, this edition is somewhat of a shocker...some musicals cues came out slightly earlier by a few miliseconds.so were a few dialogues.and like bambi..some new unnoticed music score became prominent in the new mix.and there were some jump in two zooming shots that were not apparent in the 2003 edition. one when the camera zooms on philips wet mantle and the other when the camera zooms at the fainted aurora. its like they change the position of the background or changed the background totally.its seems like a camera cheat. as for the disturbing musical rearrangement.for the sharp eared, try listening to the score right bfr the squirrel threw the acorns at the animal friends.something is peculiar there.

im sure i wasnt delusional.

I heard those changes too, but as I didn't see the film when it first came out, I didn't know if the 03 or 08 DVD was "wrong".

Either way, I don't mind do much. It was odd at first, but it's nice.

Well, probably all the previous version soundtracks, the original LP records, all the remastered soundtracks that came out on cd and soundtracks of the movie as shown in theatres over the years were wrong, and this completely changed 2008 version is the only right version.......

same issue with the bambi DEHT. in the restored mono..when bambi ducks as his mother scans the meadow, there's no music..in the DEHT there is.

akhenaten, interesting the things you mentioned. Very strange.

In almost every scene lines or little thins are shifted, it's very disturbing.

In the gifts of beauty the first line is sung too early, the second line too late, the third line too early again and the fourth line too late again.
And what are those strange chords in Once upon a dream when Philip stops singing?

I know this film inside out, and I'm so used to hear certain lines combined with certain background music etc. The start of a word exactly on some note in the music, everything is changed now :(

And there is also one more thing in the colors I noticed.
In Once upon a dream, during the second half of the song, suddenly the white lines in Aurora's hair turn GREEN?!
Not just green, but ice cream, chewing gum, bright green. It looks really funny.
In all the other dvd versions I have the lines stay the same color as before. White.

i wouldnt argue about the ever shifting colors because it will never be resolved like the middle east crisis. for all we know we can always anticipate a newer truer color in a decade for eternity.

but i dont like the omission of key sounds during many scenes.

example 1

after merryweather says "and i still say we ought to use magic" as flora throws the cloth over her..there used to be a harp accompaniment.

NOT ANYMORE.

example 2

when the squirrel spots the mantle, the camera zooms and there was a flute sound.

WAS.

yes and whats with the two odd notes after philip sang? i thought it was my messenger ringing. it is as distracting as the added BOOM when mary poppins jumped into the chalk painting.

the next glaring mistake is when the music enters too soon to the shot of flora guiding the scissors snipping the sleeve.it sounded like it was abruptly put in.

too bad the R3 dvd doesnt include the restored original audio, so i couldnt make an english audio comparison. but the other language dubbing retains the original mix. i dont understand how the audios couldve slipped past the audio engineer.shouldnt a 5.1 or 7.1 mix include everything?

i'm so disappointed with the mistakes. guess i'll have to wait for my deluxe collectors edition to enjoy to original audio :(

I know, I know...

But I have a 10€ Discount on DVDs. So I'm going to buy the deluxe edition and the "Figurine edition" (with the different cover art) for Christmas.

And maybe, I'm going to buy the Blu-Ray next year.

This sound problem you guys are talking about is intriguing. I'd love to hear what the tech-savvy UDers have to say about it, or perhaps Luke and Aaron for that matter.

I got the Golden thingie that opens like a book.

the making of book that comes with it is surprisingly nice. Better than the ones that came with Snow White, 101 Dalmatians and Jungle Book.

And those 4 Box sets look neat together :)
