And I'm very glad about that, considering how awful some of the new logos have been (pretty much B&tB I'm thinking of).atlanticaunderthesea wrote:So I guess we've now seen the first glimpse of the new logo; the same text as before, but now a shimmering gold?

It looks like the 2006 restoration, only brightened up. It's DEFINITELY not a completely new restoration, I can assure you that. I have watched the PE hundreds of time (I'm not kidding) and the HDTV rip which is an upscale version countless times (despite the latter's sheer ugliness) and the trailer is 99% based on that rip, just brightened up.
I believe they're gonna do a new one. It's one of their biggest hits and one that not too long ago was destined for a 3D release. I guess we'll know for sure only when they're gonna put clips on their You Tube channel near the release date.

Not this fall, though there is the possibility it will come at some point similar to how Beauty & The Beast was released in 3D after the regular Blu Ray ReleaseDisney-Spice wrote:Sorry is this still getting a theatrical release!?
I HOPE so its my favorite Disney movie! Can't wait for the diamond edition should mean a numbered spine for The Little Mermaid finally

Oh, man! I'm bummed that the little golden book isnt getting the kind of vintage treatment that some of the other classics have been getting, like Cinderella, Bambi, etc. I love it when the illustrations have a more distinct style to them, instea of simply being a storybook with images that look like the movie.

Beautiful cover. I'm gonna buy it if it has new illustrations. Reminds me of the Special Edition book that was released in 2006, along with the Platinum DVD.DylanCharles90 wrote:new book cover!

You know, this one:

Well, in this illustration, it doesn't shine, but those of you who own it, know what I'm talking about.

Those distinct style books were only because those were made back when those old movies first came out, and in those older times they made different styles of artwork for the books, perhaps even partly because the movie and designs weren't finished as they made those book illustrations. If Disney will use the oldest illustrations for The Little Mermaid they can, those illustrations will still look just like the movie, as they were doing them in "just like the movie" style back then.SWillie! wrote:Oh, man! Really? I was thinking those were new illustrations made for those little golden books. Because recent little golden books have become more stylized and expressive (Bolt, Tangled, Brave, Wreck-it Ralph), and I thought they were doing new ones for the classics as well to fit that expressive, vintage style. Because they did used to have little golden books of the classics that were done in the basic "just like the movie" style.Disney Duster wrote:Those distinct style books were only because those were made back when those old movies first came out, and in those older times they made different styles of artwork for the books, perhaps even partly because the movie and designs weren't finished as they made those book illustrations. Oh well.. I think it would so nice if they were to have some of the VisDev artists at Disney now go back and illustrate some of the classics for little golden books. Lorelay Bove illustrating Snow White! Claire Keane illustrating Beauty and the Beast! Victoria Ying illustrating Little Mermaid! I'd love that so much.

Little golden books have always been purposefully off model. Look at all the HB books where they did characted that had been well established for decades. Some are more on model than others, some are merely cut and paste jobs, but generally they let their artists do their take on any given property. I agree its a shame they werent allowed to in this case.

Yea, for instance Retta Scott was a female Disney animator (she did the hunting dogs in Bambi) and she did the illustrations for Cinderella when the book came out in 1950 with the movie. Disney did a reprint of those illustrations some years ago and that's why you thought they were new.
But personally I wish you would love the new illustrations that they are doing that do look like the film, because even though they look so close to the films, they are beautiful. Did you see the ones for The Little Mermaid on the Disney Princess site? And the ones I posted for Cinderella?

Well it's not that I don't like those ones, they're nice and all... But there's just nothing very special about them. I mean how many storybooks have those same kind of typical Disney style illustrations, using the actual character models? Lots... That's why I've been drawn to those little golden books lately that are a little different and have a little more fun with the illustrations. It just sets them apart from the other zillion storybooks that look very similar.Disney Duster wrote:Yea, for instance Retta Scott was a female Disney animator (she did the hunting dogs in Bambi) and she did the illustrations for Cinderella when the book came out in 1950 with the movie. I know what you mean by special, but these new, "like the film" illustrations are special too! I am surprised an artist like you can't notice the effort and details of the small but still special increase in quality and beauty in these new illustrations. For instance, they now all have light and shading effects that you can't find in some of the films. I am very familiar with the original illustrations these new images are improving upon and I must say the new ones have some stunning work. Floyd Norman even worked on Cinderella's and Sleeping Beauty's (which will come out later I guess) new illustrations.

Well I certainly see the difference and I can totally appreciate the work that went into them of course - I mean they're much better drawings than last time around, more on model, more true to the film, etc etc... But again, they just aren't unique. I guess that's the word I was looking for. Some of the little golden books are so unique[. I'm glad they used those new illustrations for the big golden book, as I think the newest Cinderella little golden book (the one with her in her rags on the cover) is perfect. There just something about those little, unique books that I'm really drawn to, that's all. Nothing against the others.

Well, by definition they cant really be special if there are many other books just like it (ie on model). Its like, why bother licensing out the property at all to a brand like Little Golden book if your just going to treat it like any other book based on their movies? Going off model in a charming tasteful way is kinda their specialty. Shading alone doesn't do enough make them stand out. Its a superficial crutch to make the same art look more labored over than it was.

Ok. I get you. I really am almost ashamed of you saying their hard work to make these stand-out pictures just uses crutches and are nothing special. I am really loving this image of Ariel especially with her shiny tail, I am looking forward to seeing what new merchandise is going to be released for the film. I pretty much stopped being Disney merchandise a few years back but I am hoping to pick up a few things with this new release for old times sakeDylanCharles90 wrote:new book cover!

This is the main reason I haven't cared about these storybooks and coloring books since I turned 10. They are colorful, but that's about it.Kyle wrote:Going off model in a charming tasteful way is kinda their specialty.
