Well it was just supposed to be for Steamboat Willie, but I hadn't even realized the connection with Snow White! Hahaha so yes, from now on, it's a combinationDisney Duster wrote:SWillie...that may be, but the lettuce thing is still true! And does your name combine Snow White and Steamboat Willie? Anyone got link to his blog or the image. I so desperately want to see it.Floyd Norman, a retired Disney and Pixar animator, lampooned the new name with a cartoon on his blog that depicts Rapunzel in her tower brandishing a machine gun and declaring "Rapunzel Salvation: This Is Not a Princess Movie."

Re: Rapunzel
Yes, I do think Rapunzel sounds "girly" on its own, or rather, feminine. But your whole point is irrelevant because the guardian of the (male) child will almost assuredly know of the story of "Rapunzel" and connect it with the classic fairy tale princess. And it's the parent's taking their child to see the film, and unfortunately in this day and age, a little boy may not be recommended to watch a movie about a female heroine.Disney Duster wrote:Okay, then tell me, how does Rapunzel sound girly on its own? Hm? You don't think Rapunzel sounds like it good be a guys name? You don't think the name "Prince Rapunzel" sounds like it could be a real name? You don't think Rapunzel really just doesn't sound like anything in particular unless you are familiar with the story? Rapunzel is such a weird name, it could be for a guy or a girl in some foreign country.

Keane, who has recovered from his heart attack, is back serving as directing animator on Tangled (formerly Rapunzel), opening Nov. 24. He shared a lot more than the daily drawings he made yesterday in his journal.
Keane was so thrilled that he couldn't wait to show off his movie. Talk about difficult: The CG-animated Tangled has proved to be both a technical and artistic challenge like no other in recent Disney history. In fact, with 25% of the film animated and 19 weeks left to go, Keane said they've just about gotten Rapunzel's fabled hair figured out. "You follow the design -- the twisting and turning; it's organic stuff that the computer doesn't do well."
Unfortunately, Keane was unable to let her hair down for us; however, he showed us a pencil test in his office that conveyed her irrepressible nature in a way only hand-drawn can, as she strutted to the window of her tower only to be reminded of her imprisonment. "She's a contained/uncontainable person," Keane emphasized about his first drawing in eight years.
But the surprise of the day was the six-minute rough animation clip Keane screened in the room where they watch dailies: In a meet cute encounter with dashing bandit, Flynn Rider (Zackary Levi), Rapunzel (Mandy Moore), sans skirt and hair, tries to make a bid for her freedom while holding him captive in a chair. Keane, who described how the eventual lighting would look ("He will be in complete shadow"), definitely piqued our interest.

Rapunzel
But then the parents and children better not see the trailer, because it will have the fairy tale princess with the long hair that they remember! Uh oh!
As has been said time and again, it's only the advertisements, not the name, that matters. Keep the name of the story it is, what Walt would do and has done, and just show how the cool bandit and the nice princess will be exciting for everybody. And I still wouldn't mind Rapunzel and the Thief because it still stays fairly true and sounds like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs or Beauty and the Beast.
There was an interesting other article about the name change. Even feminists who don't want girls to be princesses or watch princess movies do not thing the name change is a good move!
This article explains (ignore the stuff about Ariel being unfeminist, please, she tried to go after what she wanted, and the movie showed that the better thing for her to do was keep her voice). But the article brought up a contradicting logic in Disney's descision:
Ed Catmull of Disney said that Pixar's films seem to do well because they appeal to all genders and ages, yet they also mentioned that most, if not all Pixar's films are headed by males as the main protagonists.
But they said females as the leads make the films less successful.
So they are saying even though Pixar's movies appeal to both genders, males were the lead, but females being the lead can't do the same thing. That is an illogicy. It also shows some sexism and further reason why this renaming of the story, and trying to make Rapunzel less of a lead and more of a co-star, is wrong and bad.

I'm incredibly annoyed by Floyd... (pun intended) First he praises TPATF with "just wait and see this is gonna be big" type of attitude.. and now he's all against the corporate games being played. He should make up his mind. He comes off preach and all-knowing. And his artwork isn't that funny at all.

Rapunzel Gets Tangled
http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=27019
"The name change is (...) designed to ensure that boys go see the film as well as girls, sacrificing the familiarity of the title for something more gender-neutral (...). Certainly, from what we've seen of the film this is a Princess Bride-tinged tale rather than some pink-hued Barbie-as-Rapunzel story, so there will no doubt be lots there for boys to enjoy. But the change does put this out of step with, er, every Disney fairytale ever (hello Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, Mulan and the rest), which are generally titled for their central character, and it's kinda sad that Disney apparently thinks a film named after a girl won't draw both genders of kids to see it."
Btw, I think Floyd is funny and that he makes some good points.

Ahhhh that shot of Rapunzel's head is so beautiful it kills me (and enigmawing's edit is def now my computer background)
Now I have to say that Disney really is achieving something with that, and that's that it REALLY feels like they are pushing themselves so much as animators. I used to hate the thought of ever being a CGI movie animator, in fact I wanted to do special effects for movies, but this whole thing and seeing the renders... it makes me want to 3D animate so badly.

there hasn't been any news in ages about "Tangled". What is taking Disney so long. They are publishing news about Toy Story and Tron Legacy almost non-stop but we have yet to receive a second picture of Rapunzel. I'm curious about all the new characters, Gothel, Pascal, Maximus, Rapunzel herself and her definitive look and even those thugs. The excitement is killing me right about now!!!

Yeah, but Tron is getting released AFTER "Tangled", you'd think there'd be at least some character pics by now or a teaser poster of some sort... oh well, fingers crossed for some visual updates soon somewhere...ajmrowland wrote:Well, it's simple. Toy Story is released in only a couple months, and Tron Legacy went about a year without news, so there.

Don't worry too much. Remember, the only reason we got so many teasers for TS3 as early as we did was because of Pixar Theatrical Releases, and they've only been spending the past couple months making posters for that film. I expect we'll see photographic advertising when that movie comes out, so that people will have good reason to get hyped again after the movie.
