Yes it is. Also, that movie has what all other fairy tales sincerely need but lack - blood, zombies, more blood, tons of murder, even more blood, a Gilmore Girl being terrorized and cut up with a shard of glass, and a dead baby. Image

Ha! So true! more people need to see this movie. My fav Weaver performance  She's so deliciously wicked.
I agree that it portrays a more faithful adaptation to the Grimm brother's true intent, which was to horrify. And this film achieves just that! -

and it has a touch of incest and attempted rape, too :D

Nicky, watch the trailer:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/KOlQ75fhWKE&hl ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/KOlQ75fhWKE&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

BEST LINE: "You're quite alive for a silly little wench who's been rotting in the ground"

- looove it!

Actually- I was just being superficial. I really think the movie is too mainstream and dramatic. I wanted something a lot more horror-oriented. This is definitely thriller, drama, suspense. And the graphicness of the violence and such sort of makes it feel like a more female version of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (which was also too mainstream and adventuristic). It could have been even darker. :D

But you nailed it on Sigourney Weaver. She did a great job. And the trailer is pretty good. They just need to take out the big adventure-film stuff in the 2nd half. I should have paid attention to that before I bought the DVD. But the beginning of the trailer is really moody.

Well tbh i don't see how it could get darker. It has so many elements that so many other horror movies don't even touch upon! What more are you looking for? a snuff film?!

anyway...

just found this classic gem!

Freaking love that song- I always thought it was done by En Vogue before I downloaded it from WinMX many years ago (maybe 2004). Because it really doesn't sound like the vocalist from "Everybody Dance" (Now), you know that song?

My favorite C+C track though, naturally: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MR_1VLHUFw4

You don't? (what- you've never seen Happy Tree Friends?)

For a drama, it couldn't have been any darker. But I was honestly hoping for - not a drama.

Take out the idea of hope. Take out the notion of a happy ending. It's obvious watching this that it will have a happy ending. It plays like an adventure film with a couple horror undertones. Darker? Pull the adventure underneath and bring up the horror. Slow things down. I don't know that I want the Dwarfs to definitely be nastier to her. They could keep the Dwarfs only slightly curmudgeoned and I wouldn't care. The kinder, the dopier the victim-pool is, often the more mean the villains are. The music definitely needed help as well. Too string-heavy. Too sappy. And we see the Queen as too emotionally vulnerable, which tells us from the beginning that she's going down. And they really did that so that Sigourney would do the movie. A little too dramatic. It has an effect on the malice.

Well horror films have a horror tone. Are you thinking (have to ask, since I can't read your mind) that adventure films, dramas, and thrillers are darker than horror films? (Granted, even The Color Purple is darker than most of the empty-headed b.s. that passes for horror these days)

Well afterall it is a fairytale, Lazzy. :p It's good that they portrayed the dark side of the Brothers Grimm tale, but you've got to get the balance right. It has to have a happy ending otherwise you take away from the origin. You've got to be gruesome while being authentic. Have Claudia succeed in killing Snow White and you can hardly call it Snow White, can you?
Anyway I loves the film to bits, mainly because of it's bravery to go where no other film has gone before with a fairytale - back to the true intention, which was to scare. And I think it achieves that very successfully.

and I love the soundtrack! John Ottman did a fantastic job in reemphasizing the themes of the movie as well as the gothic era.

on a lighter note,

Is it? Good, then we both noticed.

Suspiria and Carrie were horror movies with numerous fairy-tale connections in terms of story, and they couldn't be more dark. Proving that- it doesn't matter what your inspiration is. It's what your cinematic ambitions are. The reason A Tale of Terror isn't as dark as you think it is is because they wanted it to be an adventure. All things considered, it's a thriller. That's why it could have been darker.

Take it from a horror expert.

Yeah. But I'm all-for raping the origin of a story as much as possible. I do not believe in Literal or Exact Translations of Literature and Folklore. I think it partially stifles and does a disservice to Imagination. (Though, I'm told Roman Polanski wanted Rosemary's Baby to be exactly like the book, so it was and that's his best film- but then, there aren't that many Roman Polanski's out there)

Oh, and I also didn't tell the filmmakers they had to ever call it "Snow White." I'd still have seen the movie knowing the plot was similar. I think you'll find most people wanted to see it because it starred Sigourney Weaver.

What? You think we have to wait 'til Halloween to start talking darkness and horror? Guess I'm getting a little antsy. Being overenthusiastic. But I'm going to be gone from here most of October (and I was banned last year in October, so I have overcompensating to do), I'll only post in 1 thread the whole month long. :D

Good clip (not one of my favorites from the show, but still good). Amazing show.

Anyone else catch the song they were singing at the beginning? I believe it's "Hotel California." I don't know the song well, but my parents were huge Classic Rock fans and so are Patsy and Ed(w)ina. Which is the funniest thing about the show. I doubt many of the show's gay fanbase listen to much of The Eagles or The Animals (who did "We've Got to Get Out of This Place" and "House of the Rising Sun" - which you hear in The Last Shout and the 6th episode of Season/Series 1: Birthday).
