Although I've had this DVD for almost a week, I just had time to really check this out tonight. I gotta say, I LOVE the restoration! I love the vivid colors. I compared this to the 2003 edition, and compared to the new PE, the 2003 edition looks like crap!
People who don't like the new image on the PE and think it's too wide, use the zoom button on your DVD player. If you press it once you'll still be seeing the film in widescreen, just not as "wide".
Yeah, I used to use the Zoom button a lot since my sisters hate black bars and I refuse to buy pan-and-scan anything... so I'd just tell them I bought the fullscreen and use the zoom
But my current DVD player doesn't have a zoom function (as it's also a settop recorder)... I doubt I'd be watching Sleeping Beauty that much anyway... I bought it more to collect than to actually watch again and again
Howard Ashman:
He gave a mermaid her voice, a beast his soul, and Arabs something to complain about Arabian Nights (Unedited) Savages (Uncensored)
If it ain't OTV, it ain't worth anything!

I'm likely going to muddle this up as I don't remember the full specifics...
It's prism-based colour separation system that was (and I think still is) used for photographing on three-strip cameras. The colour signal/light is fed through the lens of the camera and then through a prism, which will split it into three different records: red, green, or blue, and these records are photographed on black and white film stock. The three strips are aligned and combined, and its signal/light is fed back(wards) through the prism, with the separate colors "rejoining" together to make a colour print.
I know they discuss it at length in a restoration piece for a movie, but I can't remember which, so I'll have to check.
So I finally got around to buying the PE today and when I took it home and opened it up there was no DVD Guide. I was not thrilled. Yeah it's just a folded piece of paper but it makes the DVD set really feel full.
I know the US and Canada often get different inserts in their DVDs so is the lack of a DVD guide a Canadian thing, or was it just not put into my copy?

I didn't get one in my Blu-ray of the PE. All it had was a little booklet promoting stuff, one for Blu-ray and one for BD-Live (which doesn't even work for me). I don't know if the Blu-ray was supposed to get one or not, but I am also disappointed with the absence of the guide.

Me too!
The release is next week, so I also have to wait till then.
But I think that's no surprise since we live in the same county (and city!)
I did went to a store (blokker), but they didn't want to sell it to me yet....

I don't think It has anything to do with the store (blokker) not wantig to sell it to you yet. I don't think that store can sell it to you early. Over here in the United States the new Sleeping Beauty edition came out on October 7th and if stores over here had copies of the new edition on like October the 2nd I don't think these stores could sell them before October 7th.

Which doesn't mean they could be bought; odds are good that the computer inventory system would have blocked the sale at checkout. One is more likely to find an online e-tailer that ships early than a brick & mortar retailer that will sell ahead of the street date.
Piracy & illicit online distribution are among the reasons studios would prefer retailers keep street dates.
I pre-ordered my copy of Sleeping Beauty via Bol.com, and since it will be officially released on October 22, I expect to get it next week. Bol.com is pretty reliable.
I sometimes buy DVD's at Blokker too, Supertalies: often they sell popular titles at a price that's much lower than what online stores ask.
But I think it's wrong to display a DVD before it's official release. if you cannot sell it, don't display it!

By the way, 'blokker' is the name of the store!
Yes I figured blokker was the name of the store. In fact I called the store blokker in my last post
I don't know why they had Sleeping Beauty on display. Maybe they wanted to let people know it was coming out. But I have heard that they don't want stores to sell dvds and blu-rays before their release date.
Also look at it this way. You might enjoy the Sleeping Beauty dvd even more since you have to wait longer You know how some people want something really bad, but for some reason they have to keep waiting a little bit longer and all the extra wait just makes them even more happy in the end when they at last get what they want.

Thank you.
Yes, I do hope I will enjoy the dvd more after waiting.
Although it isn't my favourite DAC, I like the movie (and the animation) very much.
After weeks of searching I FINALLY rented the DVD!
I am very impressed with it. While it doesn't reach the in-depth information of Snow White and Aladdin the extras are really wonderful and informative, perhaps one of the better sets in the series.
I liked how honest the "making of" featurette was. I have read in some reviews that they regret that the old featurette isn't in the set. While it was enjoyable and would have liked it on the set for completion's sake it was pretty fluff. This new one is more creative. I liked how they said that the movie wasn't a flop, but that it took years for it to finally gain profit.
The Eyvind Earl featurette was also great. I find it ironic that the main reason he became such a talented artist was because his father abused him into being one.
The virtual castle information was awesome. Who knew the ride had so much history and information? But I am confused and would appreciate it if someone could explain it to me.
The featurette says that one of the reasons the castle shut down in 2001 because they felt that the special effects didn't live up to the movie. Wasn't one of the reasons the castle shut down was because of 9/11?
The new transfer is beautiful. The colors are extremely vivid and powerful. I also love watching it in widescreen because I would always see something missed in the pan and scan transfer.
The Tchaikovsky (sp?) Story was neat as well, but I found it a bit too dramatic at time, something typical of a dramatization. Did Peter REALLY punched through a glass window?
Overall the whole set is fantastic. Not quite like Snow White but after years of pretty slim extras its great to see such an underrated film get its just desserts.
I ordered my copy through Amazon.ca and I finally received it this morning!
I won't be able to watch it before Wednesday but I'm really looking forward this viewing! I really liked the previous release, I thought it was really complete and I liked the blurry scenes so I wonder what will be my reaction to this Platinum Edition!
The DVD has been out for a week now, but because the "collectors set + BOOK" version has been canceled in Australia, and the Blu-Ray postponed over a month, I won't be getting it until November 26!
...unless I buy the DVD now for $30, then the Blu ray a few weeks later for $50...
