Re: Snow White (Live-Action)
If they do that, they might as well spit on Walt's grave. That song is one of his staples being about something good that he intended. It's not about being saved by a prince, it's about waiting for the right person to make you happy. To change that is blasphemy and a huge slap in Disney's legacy's face.Sotiris wrote:Either the song will be eliminated or it will be given new purpose in the film. I was thinking that maybe there can still be a prince in the remake. A person Snow White doesn't know well and has a crush on and she sings this song thinking he'll be the solution to all her problems. Eventually, she gets disillusioned, learns to rely on herself, stops waiting for somebody to rescue her and discovers what real love looks like through her relationship with the thief. The prince could even be a villain who conspires with the Evil Queen. If that's the case, the song turns into a symbol of naiveté and starry-eyed romanticism that is harmful and that the audience needs to be aware and wary of. Essentially, the remake turns into yet another social commentary and a critique of fairytales.Disney Duster wrote:I just realized this new take on the "prince" will now ruin "Someday My Prince Will Come".

Re: Snow White (Live-Action)
If the thief is indeed Snow White's love interest, there are some other possible scenarios. 1) The song is reworked and the lyrics are changed. For example, instead of "Someday My Prince Will Come", it becomes "Someday I Will Be Free" or something to that effect. 2) The song remains as is because the thief is actually the Prince in disguise. Maybe he moonlights as a thief to help his people. Maybe his father, the king, doesn't agree with his ideas on how to rule the kingdom and that's why he takes matters into his own hands. 3) The song remains as is because even though the thief isn't royalty, Snow White calls him "prince" as a nickname either because of his princely looks/manners or ironically because he couldn't be further from a prince.
Re: Snow White (Live-Action)
I was thinking back to the animated film and specifically to the prince and he really has no personality at all, except for being a romantic. Even the forest animals have more personality.
Every other character is pretty straightforward and easily identifiable (Snow White is kind and caring, the Queen is evil and jealous, the Dwarfs...well, they're self-explanatory). The Prince, on the other hand, is a completely blank canvas. The movie tells us nothing about his back story, his royal background, why he was going through the forest the day he met Snow White. If I was a screenwriter assigned to this film, I would be very excited to put my own interpretation on the prince and how he wound up encountering Snow White and his despair upon not knowing where she is.
Although why do I get the feeling they will have him teaming up with the huntsman? We never do see him again after he delivers the pig's heart to the Queen.

Re: Snow White (Live-Action)
Haha, that's true
But then again, in the story itself, he doesn't appear until the very end. Any trace of romance is gone. At least, the animation has a bit of romance, based on the idea of love at first sight, which I think is lovely.

This. But I'd also add that there's something nonsensical about the argument presented. If what happens with the remakes supposedly doesn't matter, then why kvetch when they get shredded? It takes no more energy to write a negative comment v. a positive one. If anything, I'd lean towards negativity taking much less time to write.Sotiris wrote:I understand your perspective, but I think you need to realize that whether it's worth it or not depends on the individual. I sincerely doubt they would ever think of changing or omitting SMPWC. I could see something akin to what you suggested (a change to "Some Day I Will Be Free") more likely to happen as a new reprise of the song at a different point in the story. Sort of a Snow White at the start of the story mentality v. how she is at the end of the remake's story (I assume there will be a bit of a progression showing that she's learned to take care of herself to a degree).

Well Sotiris, I guess I'd be ok with the "prince acting as a thief" scenario. Hopefully they don't ruin the song with whatever scenario they come up with.
Divinity, I actually feel Snow White can take care of herself! She just needed a roof over her head!

Re: Snow White (Live-Action)
Allow me to explain why I have this opinion. Back when The Lion King remake was released in 2019, there was a user on YouTube (I can't remember who he was), and he posted a video 30-ish minute long video in which he basically bitched about the movie. Not even 5 minutes in, he was almost out of breath, and red on the face from how passionately he hated the movie. And I couldn't help but think that it was very sad, because there he was, making a fool out of himself, for a movie. He really was a freak, and there are so many like him. I couldn't even watch the entire thing, because it was embarrassing and so cringe. He never even said anything remotely constructive. He was just making funny faces, and throwing out curse words, and basically bitching about the movie. Absolutely ridiculous!Disney's Divinity wrote:This. I have seen movies that I hated, but I would never be so freaky in expressing my hatred for a movie.

Vlad, I love you, but it's really not nice to call people freaks in public.

Re: Snow White (Live-Action)
I remember that. It was so hard to watch. The whole trend of "angry reviewers" on YouTube is just embarrassing.Sicoe Vlad wrote:Allow me to explain why I have this opinion. That's what I meant. I hope this clears things a bit.
I'm at the point now where if a movie underwhelms me, I just shrug my shoulders and move on. It didn't land with me. Oh, well. Why fret on it? I loved the new "Ghostbusters" movie that just opened and I will definitely be praising and thinking about it a lot more than any of the movies I saw this year that I didn't like.
It's the same with the Disney remakes. My personal favourite of them is "Cinderella" and it's a movie I've happily revisited multiple times and own on Blu-Ray. Meanwhile, I barely think about "Dumbo." If like "Snow White", that's wonderful. If I'm disappointed with it, it will largely fade from my memory.

Aw, it's all ok now.Sicoe Vlad wrote:I know, and I'm sorry.

You know, I just worry what kids will think growing up with bad remakes of Disney classics, if they will watch them instead of the originals. I think that happened to one girl, I heard. She loved Jasmine from the live-action Aladdin, but she's missing out on the superior original. But I guess it doesn't matter, because kids might see the originals later. I'm just glad my Cinderella remake turned out as well as it did. God, I love that movie. But.no way would I show it to my kid before I show them the original!

Re: Snow White (Live-Action)
For those who are introduced to the movies via the live-action remakes, Disney+ does do a good job of showing the animated films front and centre. When I finished watching the "Lady and the Tramp" and "Mulan" remakes on D+, a pop-up immediately appeared suggesting I watch the animated film.

Re: Snow White (Live-Action)
I agree with what you say. Also, here in Romania, the dubs made for Disney dubs are really awful. We use the same actors for all dubs, and these actors don't know how to perform, and this takes away from the emotional impact from the scene in the movie. Children in Romania prefer to watch the dubbed versions, and it's so sad, because they will never hear what the directors initally wanted the audience to hear. Instead, they get a much weaker version.Disney Duster wrote:Aw, it's all ok now.Sicoe Vlad wrote:I know, and I'm sorry.

I will use as an example the scene in Beauty and the Beast in which he dies. Paige O'Hara actually shed tears when she recorded her lines. Our voice actress didn't have any emotion in her performance, and the scene was no where near as impressive.

Oh, that's good to hear estefan.
Oh man, that is really sad to hear, Vlad. I understand children wanting to hear the dubs, so they should get better dubs!

Re: Snow White (Live-Action)
I learned English as a child, by watching these movies in their original versions. It's sad that kids nowadays don't do this.

It's pretty amazing you learned English as a kid that way! If only kids would learn it that same way, too. It's a good way!

Re: Snow White (Live-Action)
They played a clip of Zegler as Princess Fiona (from Shrek) in her high school play / musical during the 20/20 special Making Of that aired tonight, and from that I can definitely hear the Snow White voice. Jury's still out on her acting ability though; it might be a long time before I see the new West Side Story.
