Nice read!

But, ...the DVD-only Edition has been cancelled?? Officially? Wow, that's a bummer as I really liked the cover art for that. :(

It seems odd for Disney to have canceled the DVD-only release in the US. I've seen it on shelves here in Australia and the cover art truly is beautiful without the coloured border they use on the blu-ray release.

Oh, crap! I was hoping to get the new DVD. Now I'll have to hunt down the Platinum Edition.

Are we really surprised they killed the DVD release of this one? Not really. In a few years I'm sure they'll kill Blu-Ray. I just hope they get all 51 DACs out on what could be the last form of physical media, before they go to full streaming.

Gonna be picking my Lady and the Tramp copy at Future Shop later today because they are offering a $10 credit towards The Muppets Blu-Ray release! And I just printed off my ticket for BatB 3D so I'll catch a show of that as Future Shop is right across the street from the theater. Busy day today as I also have to hit two job fairs, and unfortunately I'm suffering from some killer lower back pain right now, not fun.

So Best Buy doesn't carry the three disc edition in store. That was a bit annoying... The guy that set the display didn't even know what version I was talking about. While I was there, I checked the website and it doesn't seem like they'll carry it at all. Luckily there was a Walmart right down the street and they ended up having it. They also have an exclusive release that comes with a bowl, which I thought was kind of strange.

Duster, you really should do your research before you dismiss this as a bad thing, because based on what you said in your last post, you don't seem to really understand how digital distribution works.

First, you said that if something were to happen to it, it is lost forever. That simply isn't true. The movies will be stored in "the cloud", and the worst thing that could happen would be for Disney's servers to have temporary issues. But the way cloud systems are set up, this would most likely never be a problem because of the sheer number of servers that would be set up to handle this sort of thing.

Second, you say that the quality will not be as good as a blu-ray. As of today, digital copies can be as good as blu-ray (1080p), while streaming videos are usually not. But, the quality of streaming videos has gone way up in the past two or three years, which leads one to assume that it will continue to do soon the next two or three years. In two years we could very well be streaming movies at 1080p. It will most certainly be at least 720 by that point.

Third, you say you don't want to watch the film on your computer, you want to watch it on your tv. This is what really shows me that you don't really understand how a digital streaming service works. You WILL be able to watch them on your tv, Duster, through many different devices. That's why Disney Studio All Access is so exciting. (which, still, no one has responded to me about?) you will be able to watch the movie on your computer, your phone, your laptop, your iPod, your iPad, your mothers phone, your sisters computer, your tv, your girlfriends tv, and every other device that you could possibly imagine, as long as it has Internet access. (which, in this day and age, let's face it... If you don't have Internet access, you're behind the times.) AND this will all happen without carrying a disc around or having to sync your device with your computer. It will just be there, waiting for when you want to watch.

And last, you say "how is digital the future anyways when most people don't have a bluray player and geeks are the only ones into digital?" Both these statements are wrong - first, you don't need a blu ray player to use a digital streaming service. It is only one of many devices that can be used. Others include a ps3, Xbox 360, wii, and an Apple TV. Many tvs today can even do it on their own, without any device at all. So the correlation between digital and the number of people who own a blu ray player is not relevant. And second, it is NOT only geeks who use digital streaming services at this point. Do you know how popular Netflix is? Do you know that it works the same way that I've just described above? Digital streaming for movie rentals has already hit the mainstream, and that's because it is fast, it is easy, and it is convenient.

Mine just arrived from Amazon and the case is crushed. Yay bubble mailers. :(

The discs are fine. Debating asking for a replacement, or just sending it back and going to Target/Best Buy.

After reading the recent posts on this thread and the review, the DVD only release has been cancelled. At first I thought, they probably cancelling the single disc release for a 2-disc DVD release but now I'm thinking that's highly unlikely. I'm not a fan of Blu-ray/DVD Combo packs and is best to get the film in thier respected formats individually. With the news of this, I'm worried about the DVD only release of The Muppets now.

Not that I don't believe it, but does anyone have a formal/official announcement/statement that the DVD-only Edition has been cancelled?

I'd like to read it, especially curious to see if they've given a why.

Quick question, when you get the three disc set, which version of LatT does iTunes give you? I see they have it in both SD and HD, and was hoping it would be the latter for my iPod touch.
Thanks to all that offered to help with my Avatar...Starion, RJKD23 and cj!

I just picked up the 3 disc set at Walmart using the $8 off coupon. The cashier stood there starring at the coupon for about 2 minutes, confused. I was prepared for him to tell me they couldn't take it. I suggested he try scanning it, which he did and low and behold, it worked. lol, oh walmart.

I can't help but feel that this release feels so "cheap".

I expressed my concerns with how Disney's releases don't feel as presitigous as say Snow White and Beauty & the Beast were. However, from the copy and paste of the old Platinum DVD cover to the shoddy blu ray menu it just feels very cheap.

However the picture and audio are just...wow this is a 50 year old movie? When you see this in motion you will be wowed, it's simply stunning.

I was never one for special features either, but it just seems really really shoddy the special features that are on this disc. I truly miss the platinum era when it seemed like these releases were big deals.

I just can't help but to feel cheapened by the release it doesn't have the hype or allure like any of the other diamond editions that were released.

For me, that's the only reason I am buying these blu-rays IN ADDITION to my Platinum DVD collection. No way would I part with the overall superior releases, but these films just look too stunning on blu-ray not to own. Even The Fox and the Hound not being up to standard for the blus is still 10 times better than the DVD video quality.

Same for me. If it wasn't for the excellent video/audio quality I would stick with my old Platinum Edition.

I think that is ultimately the only reason to get the blu's. Sleeping Beauty's and Pinnochio's PE Blus were the best and I feel like it's been downhill from there. The audio and picture is the only upgrade left.

I'm having troubles deciding where I want to buy this. I was thinking of going to Best Buy to price match with Target, trade in a DVD, and use my coupon... but I don't really want to trade in any of my DVD's. At that point, I might as well just go to Target and use the coupon, but that extra $5 off is just such a sweet deal... decisions, decisions.

Mine hasn't arrived yet, But I can tell you I've used most of the digital copies released before (Lion King, BATB, Pixar releases, etc.) and they all come with the SD version (also says so on the back cover if you look closely)

anyone try this second screen thing? It seems like shit.

Now I know back in the day all we had was coming attractions, our mickey mouse, blue castle openings and the featured titles. However, it just seemed like the release was a big deal.

I dunno I think I've just been in Disney hype mode after seeing The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast in 3D and the great marketing they got.

okay, so just to give some clarification....im not very tech savvy and dont want to sound stupid with the question Im about to ask...and, I know that some people on this board can be very snakry, rude and down right a**es sometimes, but,........have I made a mistake by purchasing my prior "Diamond Edition" releases on single dvd?/? I am reading all the comments about how the Blu-Ray releases are so much better than the single dvd releases...but, I thought that it was the same movie?/? So, I guess my question is...did those of us who bought the single dvd releases screwed and have bought crappy copies compared to those of you who got the Blu-ray? in terms on the picture quality?
