Oh, definitely! I've been dying to sketch her out but want to hold back until we have a better idea of what her final design is going to be. Playing with an existing pic is the next best thing to that.robster16 wrote:You betchaenigmawing wrote: We're having too much fun with this. It's one big guessing game untill they roll out the pictures for this movie. And wow, so different than in the days of The Little Mermaid, no internet to scrounge up details with back then, nor was there really anyone to share the excitement with. I remember the very first sign I saw of the movie was a tiny little pic of Ariel on the cover of some magazine, maybe Newsweek. It really left me hanging and wondering and hoping.

I remember that before having internet access I used to go to the public library in my hometown and go online to get info from upcoming animated features. I remember seeing Mulan's first trailer postage stamp size in horrible stream quality.enigmawing wrote:Oh, definitely! And back in the day I would go through every single magazine and those stickerbooks for Disney movies. I'd go to town and buy 3 or 4 package of stickers to complete the books and then spend all day drawing the characters, etc, etc... love it!

It's a branding thing - They are trying to be a bit more like the BBC in the consistent use of their logo. The other half of this is the "One Disney" program where all the division logos are being aligned. It's good branding.enigmawing wrote:Thanks.sotiris2006 wrote:The logo looks great enigmawing! Btw, it's gonna be just "Disney" instead of "Walt Disney Pictures" on top of all their new movies, not just for Tangled.
A recent example is for Alice in Wonderland, that just says "Disney" on top of the logo in all the promotional materials.I figured the case was something like that, seems there was a discussion here a while back about the differences between labeling films/posters/covers/etc. with Disney vs. Disney's vs. Walt Disney Pictures.
Personally I think it looks really weird to just plop only the Disney name above the film title and be done with it.Or maybe it's just the grammar police in me.
I'll scan in my Alice in Wonderland invite to show you the difference.

I totally did the same thing! I got online at home pretty late in the game (2004) so I was on the library computers for quite some time (since 96-97). I remember looking for info on Mulan when it was about to come out and finding the posters (which I'd have to pay ten cents to print out in B&W, lol), the poem it was based on (I think that was on the official Disney site at the time but I could be wrong), but I don't remember being able to find any trailers (or if I did, perhaps they were too difficult/time consuming to stream at the time) . . . I dunno, I wasn't so good with computers back then.robster16 wrote:I remember that before having internet access I used to go to the public library in my hometown and go online to get info from upcoming animated features. I used to get the stickerbooks too! I still have my old Little Mermaid one sitting on my shelf (not sure how I managed to find all the stickers but the book is completely filled). Plus I used to pick up the coloring books/comics/etc. of the latest Disney movies (as well as older ones) just to check out the art and have some kind of guide to draw the characters.
It's another reason I'm glad that Disney's producing such films as this and The Princess and the Frog, it brings a little of that excitement back.
I imagine it's not a bad thing when it comes to business, it's just that, over time, it feels like they're acknowledging Walt Disney as less of a person and more of a brand name. Then again I suppose it's true these days?drnilescrane wrote:It's a branding thing - They are trying to be a bit more like the BBC in the consistent use of their logo. Oh, she is gorgeous! The big eyes threw me off at first... but really, it's no worse than Ariel. It's such a Glen Keane design, and she definitely has the Disney Princess look and feel. She's gonna fit right in with the other 9, CG or not. Painterly, indeed.

Wow. She looks extremely pretty. Reminds me of Ariel.enigmawing wrote:This is an edit I did of the pic MALEFIKO shared with us . . .
Mostly because I wanted to see what she looked like with smaller eyes.I also attempted to paint over the text since it was a bit . . . distracting.
Is Glen Keane still working on this?
Yes, he's the animation director/supervisor (whatever the term is..) so he while he isn't the actual director of the film, he is still getting quite a lot of say in this movie, which is an extremely good thing.DisneyJedi wrote:Wow. She looks extremely pretty. Reminds me of Ariel.

I have a problem with the eyes: they are to big. It makes her look like a doll, not like a 'real' girl. is this the way Disney designed her?enigmawing wrote:Mooky wrote:Well, hello there Ariel with blonde wig and green contacts!

Rapunzel
Robster16, if you have a problem with me, okay, then say so and maybe I can stop it, but I don't think it's too bad to ask about what's going on with your petition and the LA Times.
I realized two more things. One, Rapunzel is the name of lettuce. In fact, she was named after the lettuce the witch traded for her. So it's not a girl's name. It's lettuce. Little boys will not think a movie titled a kind of lettuce sounds girly.
And...there are many things we can not be sure whether Walt Disney would approve of...but one thing we can be pretty sure he would not approve is calling his company's take on a fairy tale "Tangled" or anything so far away from the original title.
We don't know how he would feel about new territory, but when it comes to old territory, a fairy tale (or anything based on literature, for that matter), we know from showing us time and time again that he would never have changed the title (except something like for example Treasure Planet since it would not have made any sense keeping the original title as it was so different, set on other planets).
And if you say he may have changed with the times, we still can be pretty sure he wouldn't have approved of this, because many people thought Snow White was going to be a folly, that no one would want to watch it, but he stuck by it. He didn't change anything to get more people to see it.
And then of course if you keep saying Walt is dead, yea, each time you say that it just shows less and less respect for the thing you claim to love.

Of course Disney girls are not 'real', but I still think the eyes are to big! I think Belle had them quite in proportion. They don't have to look like a playdoll or like manga-style characters i.m.o.

I replied to the inquiry over the past weekend. Haven't heard any response back yet. I included your suggestions in the reply I sent and other points brought to my attention on this forum and other websites. I could post my full reply is anyone is interested. I'll be sure to keep you all up to date about any response or feedback I get and what will happen with all of that now.

Oh, well thank you robster, that was very, very nice of you, and that made me very happy!
I would also love to see the full reply, as long as you feel safe posting it here. You could also pm it to people interested, but that may be a lot of pms, I don't know, it's all up to you.
SWillie...that may be, but the lettuce thing is still true!
And does your name combine Snow White and Steamboat Willie? Two big Disney firsts! Awesome!
And today, I read Alice in Wonderland made a lot, a lot of money, more than they expected. And I was wondering if that PG movie with a girl's name in the title...which made them so much money in theaters...might make them think more on letting Rapunzel stay Rapunzel? Yup, I'm hopeful, like a Disney protagonist!

I agree with you. (Though I'm not sure if you're grateful to be in my company, considering everyone seems to disagree with me no matter what it is I say these days).BelleGirl wrote:Of course Disney girls are not 'real', but I still think the eyes are to big! People have been comparing her to Ariel, but she doesn't look that much like her to me. That have the same look, of course, but Ariel's eyes were apportioned to the rest of her head. I tried to put a picture of Ariel at her biggest-eye moment (I'm thinking her song's reprise), and I don't see. Again, they have a similar design, but Ariel's eyes don't look nearly as about-to-pop-out-of-her-head as Rapunzel's. Maybe it is the CGI that makes the eyes standout more. I really don't know, she just doesn't look like the Renaissance princesses to me (in that way--she does share a similar conceptual look though).
My first impression was that she looked a bit like Henwen--I think it's the color pink they used for her skin, and the way her nose sticks up (and the deformed lips) that made me think that. And why are her eyes nearly as big as her whole hand?
Still, I don't expect her to look this bad later. Promo images/etc. are notorious for being hideously off-model and unflattering.
