Re: Monsters University
Monsters University director gives more details about the continuity problem in Mike and Sully’s backstory.
Source: http://www.slashfilm.com/monsters-unive ... backstory/Well in the first film, uh, they actually say you’ve been jealous of my good looks since fourth grade. And in the teaser they go on and on about fifth grade. So that was something we talked about early on. We chose college because we wanted to see their relationship develop when they were adults and not just still be more or less similar to the characters we remember from the first film. And we also felt like college is so much about self-discovery and figuring out who you are.
It just felt like the perfect place to do this, but we had that line, you know, that line was out there. So we tried versions where they met young and then we kind of skipped ahead to college. And we knew we didn’t want to make Monsters Elementary. We had no interest in that. Honestly it became a thing where you sort of felt like you were missing the relationship grow, because you jumped ahead any way we sliced it.
And it was really Pete Doctor, the original director, and John Lasseter who finally kind of said to me, it’s great that you’re honoring that, but you have to do what’s right for the story. You have to do what’s right for both stories in the long run. And so we made a tough decision to just have them be in college and put that line aside. So the good thing is the only reason that line was in the first film was to just give you the feeling that these guys have known each other a long time and I think that college still does that.
So yeah, now we joke that that’s just an old monster expression, you've been jealous of my good looks since the fourth grade. That’s what monsters always say to each other. So, uh, so luckily I feel like when you watch the movies together, the spirit of it still works great.
Re: Monsters University
Yeah, while I totally think they could have come up with a good way to work it out and not have to go against the original line, I do think it can be written off as an "expression", where "since the fourth grade" really means "since forever ago".

I don't, I think that's really stretching it for an explanation and just shows how poorly they handled it.SWillie! wrote:Yeah, while I totally think they could have come up with a good way to work it out and not have to go against the original line, I do think it can be written off as an "expression", where "since the fourth grade" really means "since forever ago".
Why not have them in part of grade school as kids, and then not meet again until college, not fully remembering each other?

I agree. The continuity error was handled poorly and unimaginatively. They could have found a better way to handle the issue instead of simply ignoring it.Flanger-Hanger wrote:I don't, I think that's really stretching it for an explanation and just shows how poorly they handled it.
I would even be willing to accept it as just an expression if they would show someone in MU using that phrase as such or something to that effect.

Re: Monsters University
The expression handwave doesn't hold water if you remember the teaser with Sulley telling that very specific story about fifth grade. It's just kinda dumb that Pixar thought it was necessary to tell MIke and Sulley's life story when they could have just as easily had Mike going "Oh it's this jerk again" when meeting Sulley at college. Just deciding to give up because they couldn't find a way to briefly talk about their past is uncharacteristically lazy of Pixar

To be honest, I'm not that hyped for this movie. I'll see it but to me from what I've seen I feel eh about it. I might be alone, but I would have rather seen a sequel to Monsters Inc that included an older Boo reuniting with Sulley and Mike.

I'm not sure if this has been posted or not but here is the 3rd and final trailer: Click here.
Re: Monsters University
I have actually used that line as an expression way before these movies came out. But hey, if that is the worst thing about this film, then it must be pretty good.

Huh. I was half-expecting it to get a PG-rating, obviously because of the fact that it was a college film.Mickeyfan1990 wrote:MU gets the G rating (no surprise there!):

Because Kyle mentioned global illumination and how they have been using it. I found this article from AWN which sheds more light on the subject (no pun intended)
Shining a New Light on Pixar
Bill Desowitz reports back from Pixar about how global illumination is powering the upcoming Monsters University and The Blue Umbrella.

Re: Monsters University
So I wasn't really that far off. Their just using more of it. The real innovation, similar to the lighting in cars with their reflective surfaces, seems to be more in the real time phase. Being able to see what your doing as your doing it more or less is a huge time saver.

Wait. So... their childhood is already IN the movie? And they couldn't add a nod to Mike and Sulley meeting when they were young?
Re: Monsters University
Well now the reviews are starting to appear and for the most part critics are saying that it is good, not great. I have no idea how Eric Kohn's review is a rotten though as he gave the movie a "B".

In the Hollywood Reporter they called it lame and likened it to "Cars 2" and "Brave."
Drat. I was hoping this would be a return to form as the original is my favorite Pixar film. Hopefully when I see it I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Re: Monsters University
So, I saw this the other day and, while I'll let Luke cast the official review next week, I found it ... good, but not so good.
(See? That's why I don't write reviews. My thoughts don't come out very clearly.)
As a stand-alone movie, it was entertaining. As a Pixar film, it was bleh. Obviously the production standards were much better than television; however, it sort of felt like a super-good T.V. series. Is it wrong to say that I just go into Pixar films with extraordinarily high expectations?
Final line -- I enjoyed it, but it is not a movie I will be talking about for ages to come. It totes lacked the hilarity AND heart of the original.
** On the plus side: It was still loads better than Cars 2! **
