If voices were not replaced we wouldn't have any cartoons of Mickey, Donald, Goofy... any of the princesses before Ariel. The problem is they dont sound like the characters anymore. The princesses never age. Could you imagine Snow White sounding like a 80 year old but still looking 14?
But we don't have full agreement that the voices of the princesses have changed that much. I think the general consensus is that they all still sound the same, except for Paige O'Hara, who's character's actually already been voiced by Susan Egan and Jodi Benson over the past decade.
I can of think of only two reasons for this move-- Either the original Princesses were receiving too much in royalties/Disney just felt they were paying them too much, or they want very, very youthful voices that don't necessarily match the characters... perhaps for the new line design?

It's really kind of ironic, given that Jodi Benson was Disney's first choice for Belle's voice actress. But anyways, when DID Jodi voice Belle?

In the DTV movie, Snowed it at the House of Mouse, if memory serves she sang a few lines as Belle. There may have been other occasions, too.
I saw this news at the beginning of the week at http://www.flicks.co.nz/movie/beauty-and-the-beast-3d/ and if correct, New Zealand and Australia will be getting Beauty and the Beast in Cinemas around about 31 May 2012.
No signature needed - Kyoto Animation put out some beautiful animation

I'd bet on the first one. Wasn't this the same reason they replaced peter Cullen as Eeyore? Its all about money and their trying to cut corners any way they can.
BUT there is still no reason to replace them; they all still sound the same bar Paige ! Who has pretty much been replaced anyway.
Kathryn Beaumont and Adrinna Cassoletti (sorry for spelling) both voiced their respective characters until they were much much older. Isnt there a wishing well in Disneyland that has 'fresh' vocals from Adrianna recorded in the 80s ? And Alice and Wendy have their original voices in the ride/parks and videogames. I mean, Kathryn was still going to be Wendys voice in Peter Pan II before they changed the story ?
Just saw this for the first time on the big screen in 3D...and I loved it! So many details that I have missed all these years, such as seeing the words "Prince Charming" in French in the book Belle was reading by the fountain during the opening number, and perhaps a picture of Belle's mother in the scene when Belle is nursing Maurice to health.
Anyway, this just affirms my belief that movies, especially classic ones from the past, are meant to be seen in cinemas.
SEE THIS! IT'S AWESOME! Great movie in great 3D!!! It's really sad that this isn't doing as well as The Lion King since I think its a better movie than The Lion King. How well IS it doing?

OMG me too! I noticed that for the first time this time!

That's awesome!! I had never seen that before until now. There were other things and words I hadn't noticed till today! Another thing I noticed was a Latin quote under the stained glass window in the very beginning. Also, I couldn't take my eyes off of the red carpets in the castle for some reason. So much detail!
As I was watching it, I got excited about The Little Mermaid 3D that will be coming next year! Ah, how I wish "Cinderella" would be re-released! It does not have to be in 3D. Just to see it on the big screen would be amazing! Same with Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, etc. But it probably would never happen.
Although, a thought did come to my mind: Do you guys think Disney would re-release "Mary Poppins" theatrical for the 50th anniversary in 2014? I'm sure a Blu Ray will be released, but what about a theatrical re-release? Maybe even in 3D?

That would be "Vincit Qui Se Vincit" which means "He conquers who conquers himself" which makes sense as that is what the prince needed to do, conquer his spoiled, selfish, beastly self.

Yea I wish too!!! Walt told them to keep re-releasing the films in theaters and they used to do it for a while! But it seems they view their re-releasing on home video as a replacement. It's still not the same as what Walt said though.

OMG, yes... YES!!!! They HAVE to do that!!!!
I wouldn't be surprised if something special occurs for the 50th Anniversary, aside from a Blu Ray release of course!
atlanticaunderthesea I'm sorry you are so upset about Jodi Benson possibly not voicing Ariel anymore. But I'm sure you'll realize, Ariel will always be Ariel, and the character lives on no matter what they do, because Disney has sometimes messed her up, but that doesn't change who she really is, living in your dreams and heart. Jodi was not sounding exactly like her in some late things I heard, so it might be better for her to get a voice tune-up every once in a while if they find someone who can sound like her. The character is not the same as Jodi. Jodi is a very religious (and possibly even homophobic, but I don't hate her for it) adult woman who has her own seperate values and beliefs. She has Ariel in her, but Ariel's also in you and everyone else who loves her. She exists seperately from Jodi.

What a lovely way to put it, Disney Duster! Bravo!

Well, yes. But Jodi brought Ariel to life through her voice and she practically IS Ariel that way.
Sorry to sound redundant, but you have to admit that Ariel without Jodi Benson's vocals seems really unimaginable. Really, that's like trying to find a vocally identical replacement voice actor for any character that Dom DeLuise or Eartha Kitt has ever voiced.
I'm not saying that Jodi is dying, but seriously. When people say you can't top the original, they pretty much mean it. And in my opinion, you can't top people like Jodi, Eartha or Dom when it comes to voicing the original characters.
No you can't top them, but that's not what's happening. What's happening is Jodi is getting older and she has not sounded like the same Ariel we know in some recent voicings of her, at least that I have heard.
Ariel was created in part by Jodi's voice and acting and the Disney artists. She doesn't belong only to Jodi. Once someone watches The Little Mermaid, they know Ariel. Jodi was an actress, who helped in bringing Ariel to life. And if another actress is good enough, they can also bring her to life. Is Jodi the original who can never be topped? Yes. Does that mean no one else can ever try their hand at bringing Ariel to life just the way she did, since Ariel is no more real to her than other people who have seen and love the film? No.
UmbrellaFish, thank you, I was trying to cheer people up, and what you said cheered me up!
It should be known that Disney got over the "who will replace which character?" dilemma way back when Walt himself handed Mickey's voice over to Jimmy MacDonald.
well, just got back from palmerston north, a town an hours motorbike ride away. i found out yesterday they were screening this. i dont think theres been any tv advertising, nor stories on the news or magazines etc. however, i went to see it... TWICE! got there for the 10.30am screening, went shopping for a bit and filled the bike with gas and then went back for the 3.30pm show.
the first showing, i was there all by my lonesome. was absolute bliss! i noticed so much detail in the carpets. the embroidery [?] really seemed to pop, as did the beasts eyes, especially during the wolf fight and when he grabbed belle in the dungeon. i took the glasses off and it seems in some clips they 3d'd his eyes and nothing else.
the second showing, there were 2 other women there. they had something wrong with the camera to begin with. the 3d was blurred all to hell... it looked like it does without the glasses. they cut it off about halfway through the tangled short for about 5 minutes. they then re-started it where it stopped and it was fixed.
i really liked the sketches during the end credits and im curious to how they were done. the final one of adam looked like chalk almost. just stunning.
they showed previews for the new ice age and madagascar films, as well as BRAVE! that movie looks much better on the big screen than watching the youtube videos on here.
i also found out they will be showing chimpanzee, so i can see this cinema getting quite a bit of money out of me over the coming months. yes, its dearer, but the facilities are lovely and the cinemas themselves put our local one to shame.
Sounds like your theater wasn't using digital projectors? I know they have to constantly realign the lenses or something for the older projectors. Newer ones don't have that problem. (I think)
