Oliver & Company- 20th Anniversary Edition
Finally, a Dutch edition has come out this week. While I knew from UD's review that the bonus features were virtually non-existent, I was disappointed nonetheless. Especially because one of the trailers (the only good thing on the disc) brags about "Disney's fondness" of the film, because it started the "Disney Renaissance". You couldn't tell Disney holds a special place for the film judging this release.
But, I've finally got to see the entire film in English for the first time! (I had seen the songs in English, but I only owned a Dutch VHS.) It's amazing how much the original voice cast enhances the quality of the film! All in all, everything about Oliver was much better than I remembered it. I think the character animation is among Disney's best, and there's no other Disney film that has made me laugh out loud more.
One question: Why does it say this is Disney's 30th Animated Classic on the side? As far as I know, it's Disney's 27th. It also says 27th in the fluff pieces.

Maybe the 30 counts Mary Poppins, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, and Pete's Dragon? But then one must wonder about Song of the South and So Dear to My Heart...Goliath wrote: One question: Why does it say this is Disney's 30th Animated Classic on the side? But as far as I know, the 'official canon' doesn't include any of those, right? Wikipedia has it at 27, and apparantly Disney has added Dinosaur, just so they could advertise Rapunzel as no. 50.blackcauldron85 wrote:Maybe the 30 counts Mary Poppins, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, and Pete's Dragon? Re: Oliver & Company- 20th Anniversary Edition
This is the most relevant Oliver & Company thread I could find, but the Disney Store has plushes for both Oliver and Dodger right now, at least in the U.S. Because of Black Friday, they're currently on sale.

I was pretty shocked to see this film get representation because I've never seen any Oliver & Company merchandise ever at the Disney Store. I know that there are some users here who have a fondness for the film so wanted them to know in case they already don't.

Hot Topic sometimes has O & Co t-shirts, so it's great that another store (especially Disney's own!) is representing the film.
Both plushes' pages say, "Celebrating the 30th Anniversary of Disney's Oliver & Company (1988)"

Re: Oliver & Company- 20th Anniversary Edition
I bought these at the Disney Store last week! Used the BOGO $3 plush sale.
I have a fondness for the film due to nostalgic/sentimental reasons. No its not a masterpiece by any means but it was the first Disney film that made me a Disney animation fan. And yes its sadly underrepresented in merchandise! There is also an ornament that they were selling on shopDisney.com, which I tried to get but they seem to have sold out.
btw I hate that Disney is selling all this cool 90's era film merch for millenials with special nostalgia aimed merch but have decided to completely skip the 70s/80s film era(except Little Mermaid & occasionally Aristocats and Roger Rabbit) that is still fondly remembered by us Gen Xers. Pretty unfair if you ask me!

Happy 30th Anniversary to all involved in Oliver and Company! (Yeah, I know it is also Mickey Mouse's 90th birthday, but for the purposes of this thread, O&C would be more important...)

Re: Oliver & Company- 20th Anniversary Edition
thanks for that link! finally some acknowledgment of how important this film was for Disney in getting them back on track. It always got sidelined b/c of the success of Little Mermaid the following year and its really unfair. But I think it should be included as part of the Renaissance, along with Great Mouse Detective.

Re: Oliver & Company- 20th Anniversary Edition
Honestly, both of these films would make a lot of sense as part of the Renaissance. TGMD is the first film Musker and Clements worked on so it works well alongside TLM, Aladdin, and Hercules and Oliver was technically the first Disney film to be a musical in a long time, not TLM.unprincess wrote:But I think it should be included as part of the Renaissance, along with Great Mouse Detective.
