How many Disney DVDs do you have?

I agree. Folks in the 400 and 500's are true fanatics. I'm just working on the the Animated features, particularly the DACs.

Escapay, I just purchased a couple of DVDs off PLAY.com and almost bought The Rocketeer before getting cold feet (due to its being a blind buy) and deleting it from my shopping basket.

In other news, a planned vacation from New Jersey to Malta was canceled. When the travel agent asked why the trip was canceled, his client said "Because of The Rocketeer, George. The Rocketeer."

May I ask what were the two DVDs that you ordered that you apparently just had to have over The Rocketeer?

Well, um ... (now I feel sheepish) ...

I was looking for some Disney live-action fare. I was going to buy The Princess Diaries (the sequel can't compare), Holes, Inspector Gadget (who cares about the reviews!?) and The Rocketeer.

I then removed The Rocketeer and replaced it with Touchstone's The Count of Monte Cristo (which I really like and it was almost entirely filmed here) which is still a Disney movie ... sorta.

Strangely, I like The Princess Diaries 2. Not as much as the first, but it's a nice little sequel that doesn't harm anyone.

Holes is one of those movies where you try to catch it on the Disney Channel, but it can't hold your interest no matter how hard you try.

And Inspector Gadget...seriously??? If you want a Disney dose of Broderick, you should've gotten the 2003 version of The Music Man. Oh well, thankfully you didn't get Inspector Gadget 2...that was a train wreck.

Replacing The Rocketeer with The Count of Monte Cristo (a favorite of mine as well...plus one of the characters is named Albert!!!) is slightly forgiveable, but it would have been better to replace Inspector Gadget with The Count of Monte Cristo...

Yes, I really do like Inspector Gadget!

Sometimes there are some films you just like by instinct regardless of what others say. I suspect my fondness for Inspecotr Gadget may stem from the fact that I saw it in theatres when I was more or less eight years old, and greatly enjoyed it. On seeing it again I probably won't bother evaluating its cinematic good and bad. I'll just enjoy for what it is.

I rented Inspector Gadget 2 around four years ago and greatly disliked it.

It reeks of 'low-budget-uninspired-slapdash-job'.

If you want, I can tell you some interesting stuff about The Count of Monte Cristo. Keep in mind that the movie was filmed around various places around the island of Malta. In other words, the film-makers used the actual country as the 'set' for the film, rather than constructing one, as is the case with Troy and Gladiator, both of which were filmed here too. In other words, in The Count of Monte Cristo you get to see a lot of Maltese scenics. Being an islander myself means that I've probably visited a load of places that appear in the film. If you do want me to divulge more information, just let me know.

P.S. I did it. I bought The Rocketeer! It's only 7 freaking Euros ... dead cheap. I got the Region 2 release, which appears to be in anamorphic 2.35:1 aspect ratio - so I guess I'm safe. When I get it in the mail I'll take photographs of it to prove to you I bought it!

So far I just tested the disc to make sure everything is all right. I was surprised to see that the film doesn't actually open with a Touchstone Pictures logo ... it starts with the opening credits, in a brown, thin font. I watched just a minute after the title flashes on screen - there were some people seemingly hauling a couple of propeller-driven (I think) aircraft about on what I think was a sort of runway. Unfortunately the DVD is one of those that skip the menu altogether. You get the Touchstone Home Video logo (which is almost the same as its Pictures counterpart) and the film starts. I wonder why it's not trademarked as Touchstone's Fast Play.

Regarding the lack of inserts ... I really hate that - but that seems to be the way with most Region 2 DVDs. Most of my Disney Classics are Region 2 discs, and only a few have inserts. None of the package features have inserts, or Many Adventures, Rescuers and its sequel, Basil, Oliver, Pocahontas, Hercules, etc. It seems if the release is older than a year, it's not blessed with a couple of inserts (hence, recent releases like Dalmatians and Aristocats have them - but probably not in a year's time). To top it all, most of the DVDs that have inserts may just have a friggin' slip telling you to order your free book (based on the movie). Of course the offer is only open to residents of the UK and Ireland ... and ahem ... I just live a few kilometres away from those companies. And who cares about a kids' book anyway!?

Or, you get a glossy blue paper with a thumbs up congratulating you on buying a legitimate DVD and not a pirated one. Actually that sort of makes sense for Malta since almost everyone here just pirates the films they want (i.e. ordering them from a DVD shop/ burning the DVDs at home with a DVD writer). The same goes for videogames, especially for PlayStation. I have to admit that for the latter I buy pirated games too because the originals are simply to damned expensive (even though I'm mostly anti-piracy). When I tell people that I collect DVDs they're like "Um ... Ok.". When I add that I collect legitimate DVDs, they're like "Wow!"

The sandcolored opening still font replacing the traditional logo is also used in "The Three Musketeers" (golden yellow), "Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book" (light green), "Mighty Joe Young" (blue) and in the trailer for "George of the Jungle" (blue). Have I missed any other film with this [mature-]Disney logo?

Counting 251 Disney Feature Films (WDP/TP/HP) as of today, about 50% of the entire catalogue excluding the Miramax and Dimension titles.
