Not disney but still hand drawn so figured I'd share.

As far as I can tell, this wasn't done in flash. Looks like traditional ink and paint to me.

Edit: also, here's a clip from the upcoming hey arnold movie.

The independent animated series "To Belong" has a few more days on Kickstarter, if anyone was curious.

I really hope To Belong find success! Im glad they reached their goal!

I hope Bluth can get Dragon's Lair done as well! He's really gonna have to go outside the box and forget about even approaching the big animation studios. Maybe pitch it to Netflix or Amazon?

Is it just me or does the Loving Vincent animation look a little too life-like? It looks like they rotoscoped all the people and almost everything but the backgrounds. And I mean actual rotoscoping, not the mere live-action reference that drew characters a lot more differently than the actors that was used in Disney films.

Yup, it's a rotoscoped film.
First, actors were filmed, either against a green screen or on sets built to look like the paintings. That footage then became a point of reference for artists, who painted over it with oil pigments, frame by frame.

Ah, thank you for that information! I'm sad they did that. It's really sad they felt the need to resort to that instead of doing the first truly oil painting animated feaure. I'm guessing they did it to make the film look more believable to adult audiences. Sigh.

I think it probably made the film "easier" to make (not that it was an easy film to make, but it'd surely be way harder without having the rotoscoping as a "guide").

Yea. I just wish they went all the way with painting from scratch.

I love Rocko's Modern Life and expected the movie to be done the same way the cartoon was. That's my favorite show in the universe so I'm very excited for the movie.

And to remind you, this masterpiece (and I'm being serious) opens next week:

I just want you to look at it and see how beautiful it is and it performs well, studios are going to take note and look into hand-drawn animation again.

Mark my words, it will be a hit.

I don't think the My Little Pony movie will do that great. The Brony Phenomenon isn't at prevalent as it once was and those who might have paid money to see it in theatres a couple of years ago might be less likely now.

And while the animation does indeed look lovely, I feel like parents will look at it and not feel the need to pay theatre prices for something their kids can watch at home. Animated tv show adaptations need something extra they can't get on television to get audiences to pay top dollar. That's why Sponge Out of Water heavily advertised the third act of them above ground. And it's why I think the LEGO Ninjago Movie underperformed this weekend. Many of the kids who might have seen it this weekend were probably watching the television series on Netflix instead. These are things Warner Brothers should keep in mind when they start marketing the Teen Titans Go movie next year. But considering the massive popularity of TTG on Cartoon Network, I expect it to do exceptionally well if WB plays their cards right.

Thankfully, the budget probably wasn't too high on MLP, so it should easily break even.

this is amazing, I must see this!
it reminds me of Waking Life, except I couldn't stand Waking Life! This, they basically made a biographical period film and put a impressionism art filter over it...I like period films so I think Ill love this, haha!

I do agree it would have been cooler if it wasn't rotoscoped, but I can understand why they did it considering how difficult and probably time consuming the actual animation process was gonna be.

I find the My Little Pony animation to be cheap un-remarkable flash animation.

True, I just wish if they were gonna do it they'd go all the way.

I have been following the production of the video game Cuphead for years, and it just came out. It's a hand-drawn video game inspired by 1920s-1930s animation. I've been watching it on Twitch (we bought it but haven't played it yet). It's amazing, and so innovative.
