Yes, but there was also a kid (Rusell)with Carl.
From my experience as a kid in 2009, I liked Carl because he had funny lines in the commercials. This made me as a kid to se Up. Yes, Carl was old, but funny.

Hello Mr Fredrikssen, may I come in?
No!

(Hilarious for a kid, atleast for me) Is this main character from Soul funny? I have only seen these book cover pictures and the first teaser trailer. :)

Well, I guess you have a point there. Carl at least was funny, while Joe seems more serious and probably a bit boring for children. I think the character they expect children to identify with here is 22, the one voiced by Tina Fey. But it's true that she doesn't have many lines in the trailers released so far. They've focused more on the dramatic aspects than in the comedy, but I think that could change. I bet the TV spots will show more from the funny moments in the movie.

Up is interesting, because even though the film is clearly about Carl, you never see much of him anymore. When the film is marketed, it's usually with Russell and/or Dug. I'm always surprised to see the former, because I don't know anyone who really considers Russell one of their favorite characters, even those who really love the film.

It makes a little more sense to sideline Marlin with Nemo and Dory, the former a likable child character, and the latter a more dynamic and arguably more memorable character. Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl tend to get a pass, because kids can accept and relate to adult super heroes, but Disney's also not afraid to revert to the Parr children on occasion, too.

It'll be interesting to see how this one fares in that regard.

As a person in my 20s( born 1997) i can say i already really like 22 she seems funny and dyinamic, and i have pretty big Tina Fay fan !!

I think since Fey is credited with the script ( in adation to voice work) She likely wrote Many of her own jokes which makes me super happy :D :D

Joe seems like a straghit man to me someone for 22 to bounce jokes of of .

I wonder If Paul Will be over the too. I think Daveed Diggs can go very , big dramatic , over the top if he couldn't he wouldn't have been cast as Sebastian. That's a role that needs a certain level of showmanship.

Also apparently Cody Chesnutt has joined the cast too :? :?

Pete Docter tells when and where he got the idea for the movie (if it haven't already been mentioned):

https://www.indiewire.com/2020/06/soul- ... 234570057/
It started with a simple idea, according to Docter. After coming off the high of “Inside Out” in 2015, he experienced a void: “I felt like I worked my whole life to make animated films, yet I found myself wondering, ‘Is this really what I’m born to do?'” he said. “I thought about my son. I took pictures the moment he arrived; I swear, we could already see him in there. And I was thinking, ‘How did that happen?’

“Well, because each of us is born with a soul…the soul is the center of who we are…it’s our makeup of what passions and inspirations we have. We wanted our main character in the film to have those passions born into him as well. It’s something we could all relate to and root for. A jazz musician was the perfect representation of what we were trying to say in the film.”

That is another, slightly different version of what I heard about how he came up with the idea, with some info I didn't know. So thanks!

Thanks Sotiris, that video was so cool and informative. It really shows the amount of research they did and decisions they made to make the film seem believable as far as black characters go, and they even have a black screenwriter for it! Also, great to see the research and imagining they did for the look of souls and their world and what they are.

Pixar and Disney's Soul also is set for Nov. 20, but whether it keeps its spot at the Thanksgiving table is less clear. Whatever happens, Disney insiders say the animated tentpole will get a theatrical release, versus being sent to Disney+.

Also, as we told you last week, there was loose talk that Soul would go to Disney+. A Disney insider today disputed claims that Soul was moving to Disney Plus. The pic is currently scheduled for a Nov. 20 theatrical release against MGM’s No Time to Die.

I'm guessing they're not going to postpone it because they want it to be eligible for awards. However I'm not sure it's going to remain a theatrical releases, at least not a three-four months one, I'm predicting it's going to be similar to what happened with Onward. Just my thoughts but we'll see.

Side note: with so few movies released this year and if the film turns out to be good, it might have a chance to be nominated for Best Picture.
