Has anyone who's seen Rent think the movie compares to the live version? I've only ever seen the movie (with Idina Menzel), and it was so-so.

And As the World Turns is the only soap I've ever watched, and I only began recently, because of Luke and Noah. Yes, I'm a total sell-out.

I've seen the show, both on Broadway and on tour, and I think it is much better on stage. I love the movie because I love the story, but seeing it on stage definitely beats watching the movie.

I much prefer the live show. The movie is one of my favorites, but nothing compares to being able to REALLY experience the excitement on stage.

The movie mostly suffers from Chris Columbus' flat direction and a screenplay that was too afraid to tamper with the stage show. I have an early draft of Stephen Chbosky's screenplay, before Columbus rewrote most of it, and it's interesting. Very different, but interesting. I'm not sure how I would have felt about it being the movie, but the changes originally made were sometimes drastic but always intriguing to read. I have a feeling little of the final screenplay was Chbosky's writing.

Also, having much of the OBC in the movie was fun, but I was never opposed to the idea of casting more age appropriate actors, especially in the case of Adam Pascal who I just don't think is that great of an actor and Idina Menzel, who I've always felt pretty apathetic towards, more so since the heavy smoking started to affect her breathing. I think Tracie Thoms was wonderful as Joanne, and I can only imagine what the movie might have been like with entirely new actors. Granted, I still liked Anthony and Jesse and Taye's ten minutes of screen time, but it's interesting to think about...

I would still recommend seeing the stage show or even the DVD of the stage show before the movie, because it's still superior.

Also, personally not too big a fan of Adam Lambert. I don't really find him attractive or remarkable. Not a fan of the heavy make-up or spray tan either. I do like his tight little pants, though, and when you can see his underwearz through them. Still, on the whole... whatevs.

Too bad ATWT has turned into the worst soap opera on the planet. It's so bloody awful now I need to let it go

If you get "One Life to Live" in your country, it's doing pretty good right now (compared to the train wreck it was a couple years ago). In the US it airs against ATWT and so I'd switch back and forth between them, though lately if I'm watching (which isn't very common), I'll end up watching OLTL more than ATWT. That show just hasn't been the same for me since Martha Byrne left.

anyway, thanks for sharing that list. It's awesome. I actually read about a book recently that studied the whole soap phenomenon. The writer was an educated woman who kept wondering why the hell she enjoyed filth like All My Children. It's pretty funny.

What's the book that you read? I wouldn't mind reading it myself.

And yeah, All My Children is quite filthy now. At least in the sense that none of the stories grab me anymore and it's just a bunch of hot people and their relationship woes. It hasn't been the same since Leo left in 2002 and since Greenlee left a few years after that (only to come back as a recast, then be uncasted back to the original, only to have her leave in a disappointing way).

It's so refreshing to know there are other soap opera viewers. Even if they're just watching it for a couple of characters (hell, I still watch "General Hospital" because there's several characters who I enjoy even if their story sucks).

Anyway, I flipped back and forth over Adam in the beginning of the season. At first I liked him after his Cher song. Then didn't like him after "Satisfaction." And then he became my favorite later. Strange. And I actually think he's got a cute charm to him personally. Though sometimes he verges on becoming a transvestite.

Overall, this season's been so-so, so I can't blame anyone for not watching. David Archuleta, David Cook and Carly Smithson's season was the highlight of American Idol for me, and this one hasn't even come close. But I keep watching anyway.

I have noticed some of the storylines I've been watching seem crazy and sometimes annoying (the L&N story with someone attacking the foundation was totally not a surprise--I knew it was those horny twins behind everything the moment they came on). But I just thought that was a staple of soaps.

I wonder how often soap writers change.

Well it all depends on the stability of the ratings, the popularity of the stories/characters, and the salary of the writers (also, if the headwriter is the creator, they'll stay on as much as possible, even in a consulting position). Bill Bell wrote "The Young and the Restless" for 25 years before retiring (though he continued on as consultant until his death in 2005). And Agnes Nixon was headwriter on "All My Children" for 20 years before taking a consulting position for the next 10 years (and grooming the writers that replaced her), and she's since retired although she does sit in on story meetings sometimes. On the flipside of those two examples, I remember reading that Lorraine Broderick was headwriter on "Days of our Lives" in 1999 for like, two months, before she quit because of creative differences with the producers (because she was only on for two months, there really was only like, two weeks of her own material that was on the air).

An average life for a headwriter these days is two years or so, and they'll stay longer if the ratings are what the network wants (or if they can't be bothered to change the headwriters).

Some of the short-term storylines from last year were a result of the writer's strike, as non-union writers, ghost writers, and writers who declared financial core had to create new short-term material (as well as prolong the existing storylines) that could last until the strike was over.

The crazy twins definitely wasn't a result of the writer's strike, though. I'm pretty sure they were always planned to be a short-term storyline. But the writing team for ATWT hasn't really been stellar since they fired Hogan Sheffer in 2005. Jean Passanante's stuff is okay, but Sheffer's material was phenomenal! It won the Outstanding Writing Emmy in 2001, 2002, 2004, and 2005 (the 2003 went to General Hospital I think, which was a complete joke).

Hello everyone, been busy lately but class is over for now.

A Big hello and welcome to Zack congrats on seeing RENT.

Well, I had a great day today. I am now volunteering at my local Gay and Lesbian Community Center and my summer classes starts next week.

So how is everyone else? Anything interesting happening to you guys?

Goliath, you may have already known, but the Bible is believed to be inspired by men, possibly to the extent that God was speaking through these authors' pens. [...] It is also supposed to be believed that they were not making up stories, but writing down what they had heard, as well as what came through to them from God.

Yes, that's what religious leaders have taught millions of people to believe. What do most believers actually know about the way the Bible came into being? If God was speaking through these authors, he must've been sloppy, since there are many parts that contradict each other, and several things get repeated within one story endlessly. Was man created first, and then woman? Or were they created at the same time? Genesis says both. How many animals did Noah have to bring on the boat? Two of each species? Or did he have to leave out certain species? There are three different answers. And speaking of Noah... If God spoke through these writers, he was plagarizing from older similar stories, like the Greek myth of Deucalion, or the Sumerian myth of Gilgamesj.

How people can argue this all away with a magical fairytale explanation is beyond me.

Sometimes not wanting to know information is wise, it can make you happier.

It's willfull ignorance.

We should strive and strive to be human, something above animals. Scientists decided to classify us as animals. Homosexuality was also listed as a mental illness once by doctors. We can decide what we want. We are more than animals, it's not pretend. We are so much more. Don't forget it.

The distinction is false. Biologicall speaking, we are animals. I have not seen scientific evidence to the contrary, so I'll stick with science.

Apparently Kris is very religious and is anti-gay. Because Adam is gay and flamboyant, I guess they get into fights a lot. I heard that they had paired them off as roommates too, which would most definitely intensify the feud.

Has anybody else heard anything about this? It would be nice if it wasn't true.
