Co-directed by Byron Howard (“Tangled”) and Rich Moore (“Wreck-It Ralph”) — who ran out on stage dressed in furry rabbit and fox costumes — the film recalls the anthropomorphic style of Disney’s 1973 hand-drawn “Robin Hood,” taking place in an elaborate society where humans don’t exist, but all the different creatures speak, wear clothes and walk on their hind legs.

“I’ve been trying to get an animal movie made at Disney for a long time,” Howard said. “Our boss, John Lasseter, feels that better storytelling comes from research.” At first, Lasseter sent them to a local wild-animal park to study the animals’ behavior and movement, but that wasn’t enough, packing the creative team off to Kenya, where they observed zebras, cheetahs and giraffes in the open Savannah.

Those trips directly informed how the animators adapted the animals’ natural movements to walking upright, as well as the personalities of the various critters in the film. Oddly enough, that sort of species-specific stereotyping happens to be what the prejudice-challenging film aims to debunk, using creativity and humor to deliver a pointed commentary on racial tolerance. “One of the biggest problems in Zootopia is bias,” Moore explained. “Animals are quick to stereotype each other.”

Judging by the material presented at Annecy, “Zootopia” vis-dev artist Cory Loftis and his colleagues appear to have designed some of the studio’s most visually appealing CG characters yet for the film. At the very least, Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde represent a marked improvement over the Bratz-doll look of their recent human counterparts.

This would really be Disney's third movie ugh anthropomorphic animals, the second being Chicken Little.

Sorry to nitpick, but what about "Winnie the Pooh", "Rescuers" (although it had naturalistic animals as well) and "The Great Mouse Detective"?

Fair enough, but why not making a naturalistic one? I like animal movies, but I prefer the naturalistic ones.

Man, I am getting more and more excited about this movie than ever before. The commentary on stereotypes and prejudice does seem be an issue that really needs to be talked about. I know Disney has done that sort of thing before in Pocahontas and Hunchback Of Notre Dame. But its interesting that they have that topic in an anthropomorphic animal movie.

me too, Id love another movie in the tone of LK or Brother Bear. Id like one in an environment we haven't seen yet, maybe in the Amazon or Asian steepes or mountains, or the Arctic.

You know, there's really nothing I can say about this movie that I haven't already said in the past about every other CG movie Disney had been doing that I've complained about. I hate it, and Disney has no business making it be computer animated, no matter what the story is. That pretty much sums up the majority of their recent animated films in a nutshell.

I guess it's lucky for me then that one of the idiots making this movie just happened to have started a Tumblr account about it, so I'll be sure to let him know how much he's destroying Disney animation (just like I've told Jennifer Lee when I found her Twitter account), because whenever I find easy access to the people who work at Disney today, it's my chance to confront them once and for all. After all, how else will Disney animation ever get saved if most people don't have the balls to do what I try to do for 2D animation?

You think Disney animation is being destroyed because of the fact its an art style you don't like. If you actually looked story wise the movies capture the feel of being a Disney film and have made themselves fresh for a new decade. Just think ten years ago they were trying to be Dreamworks with Chicken Little but now they recognized that they just had to be themselves instead of badly copying everyone. Not to mention with the theme of this movie being about overcoming prejudice it does seem to have a Wreck It Ralph tone to it. On the surface it could have been something juvenile but on the inside they actually did something mature with it.

Well I'm afraid your logic doesn't work there, cause Disney is not being themselves anymore. If they were truly being themselves as an animation studio then their animation would still be 2D, because that is what true Disney animation is! Out of all their recent animated films, Princess and the Frog and Winnie the Pooh were the only ones where Disney animation was truly being itself again and not deluded into thinking that they should only be doing CGI.

No matter what their art style is they still will be Disney. Yeah, they are doing computer animation these days but these days they are not trying to copy the overdone pop culture saturated humor of the 2000's. In fact Wreck It Ralph showed how to do popular culture humor good by making so that you use it to build the story and world up.

I didn't groan at The Secret Life of Pets teaser. It is what it is. A teaser about...the secret life of pets, or I'm assuming the main characters of the film. Nothing bad about it, and the humor and animation seem okay. It's just like how Zootopia used its teaser to tease...well, the setting, Zootopia. Teasers tease, and animation teasers have a tendancy to be very literal and brainlessly flashy to attract young children. Adults probably shouldn't be judging entire films from them (especially if those teasers in question come from Disney).
