It looks like a re-tooling of "The Wizard of Oz", and it really spoils the story that was told in the 1939 version of the film. The Wizard was just a dream, as was the whole Oz thing and now they are trying to depict him as a man who is sent through some 'time portal' and ends up in Oz which is supposed to be a real place, but really isn't.
Or you could read the books on which the movies are based.
lol seriously.

Junkie, just in case you aren't aware, Oz was never written as a dream. In the books it is a real place, like in Disney's new version.

Yup, the only reason it's a dream in the movie was because the executives thought audiences in the 30s could not accept a real fantasy world.

I won't be seeing this film in the cinema, because I have better things to spend my money on, than a remake disguised as a new film.
He doesn't go through a time portal, he just travels to a new land. And this isn't a remake. There's no Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man, or Lion or anything that would make it a remake. This is a prequel that shows how the humbug wizard came to Oz.

Did you read that in an official book? I just find that so strange! I mean Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs came out before this and audiences were okay with that!

Oz is whatever people want to believe it is, In The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Oz is a real place. MGM's The Wizard Of Oz doesn't fully state whether The Land of Oz is just a dream or a real place.

Mariah Carey Records New Song for Disney's 'Oz The Great and Powerful'
"Almost Home" to be released Feb. 19; David LaChapelle is directing the music video

Mariah Carey has recorded "Almost Home" for Disney's animated feature "Oz The Great and Powerful," her first original contribution to an animated feature since 1998's "Prince of Egypt."

Island Def Jam will release "Almost Home" on Feb. 19 and photographer/director David LaChapelle will direct Carey in a music video for the track that will include the singer as well as footage from the film. LaChapelle, who has shot some of Carey's album covers, previously directed her in the video for "Loverboy," the lead single off 2001's "Glitter."

Disney and Island Def Jam will simultaneously promote the single, the video and the film, which comes out March 8.

Carey, working on a new studio album for release in the spring, co-wrote "Almost Home" with Simone Porter, Justin Gray, Lindsey Ray, Tor Erik Hermansen and Mikkel Eriksen. Carey and Stargate co-produced the track.

"Oz The Great and Powerful," directed by Sam Raimi, stars James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams. Danny Elfman is writing the score.

I'm hoping 'authentic power-ballad Mariah' shows up for this and not 'slutty faux-hip-hop trashy Mariah'. We have sadly been treated by too much of the latter.

Oh and... Oz is an animated feature? Whoever wrote that needs to do his research or... maybe open his eyes.

Mariah Carey is a fantastic singer, so I'm really happy. I know it's not going to be a 90's power ballad a-la "Hero" because she's past that, but I'm hoping for something with killer vocals.

She loves herself some Disney so that's nice. I still remember her obsession with "The Little Mermaid".

Brrr don't like Mariah at all....she had some great ballads in the past, but recent work is awful.... Hoped they would have picked a more authentic artist, bit more artistic, matching the style of the movie....

Is that true? :o I had no idea. I own several of her albums and a few compilations, but I don't much about her as a person.

I'm sure whatever she sings will be classical/power ballad territory. I can't imagine they'd have anything hip hop on this film's soundtrack... :? I agree with PatrickvD that I don't really like that side of her so much (it's her prerogative, but it's not my type of music), but she has a phenomenal voice when she decides to use it.

Yep. There was that infamous Crib episode where she showed "The Mermaid Room" because it has this under-the-sea effect to it and in the background "The Little Mermaid" (the film) was playing... I think it was the scene where they're eating dinner in the castle

Then she did some interview back in the early 2000's where she said:

"When I'm not in a relationship I hardly ever think about it," she says in the middle of a conversation about "the sex thing". "That's why when I was alone last night, I ignored the adult channel and watched The Little Mermaid.

And on her old website, "The Little Mermaid" was listed as her favorite Disney movie.

There were other occasions where she mentioned it, I believe but that's off the top of my head.

OK, I went slightly off-topic. Sorry.

Although I don't care much for Mariah as an artist, I do LOVE her as a person. Anyone who's seen her giving an acceptance speech, completely drunk off her ass at the Palm Springs International Film Festival knows what I mean:

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/sleaSKmd5Js" frameborder="0"></iframe>

Now come ON. Who here wouldn't want to go and get hammered with Mariah after seeing this? She's giggling, hugging and telling people she loves them. In that moment, the diva facade came down and we saw the fun, hilarious, slightly dimwitted girl she really is. Loved every second of it.

And that part where she talks about Helen Mirren is still... comedy gold. Bless her heart.

^I agree about Mariah. I like her personality, too. She's not as bitchy as some people make her to be.

Well I hope the song works; I don't automatically put Mariah and Oz together?

Avril's Alice song was wonderful, so hope this is the same.

The pink bubble would of been better for Glinda to travel around in, but I know about copyrighting. Munchkinland looks more like something out Fantasyland.

I didn't think Disney still used Movie Surfers yet. Apparently I was wrong but I'm glad they are back. Though truth be told I don't watch Disney Channel as often as I used to because of the garbage that is on it.

That map is wrong as all Oz fans know that Munchkinland is in the East not West.
