Yes, but Justin Timberlake and Sting are also the performers of the songs in their movies, while Lin Manuel Miranda and John Legend aren't. But, I agree with you, they are going for star-power. They just added the last two to have more stars and get better TV ratings.

I'm sure both SNL Spicer and real life Spicer would think she's a Mexican illegal.

I expected that some people are going to vote for him just because of Hamilton. This Academy member didn't even say if they liked the song or not but they're voting for him regardless.

That was Disney's strategy all along. Try to get members to vote for him because of Hamilton & what not.

So glad Lin performed, but the rap wasn't necessary at all for the number. Auli'l is phenomenal. Cried the whole time for her! Both Lin and Auli'l deserve the world. PRIDE TO ALL!

I mean, did people actually thought Lin was going to win the Oscar? City of Stars had it in the bag as soon as it premiered

I would be more inclined to believe that if he hadn't already turned "You're Welcome" into a duet just so he would get to perform in the end credits. But even if the Academy did ask, he could have easily refused and insisted on Auli'i performing it on her own.

The rap "prologue" was awful. Lin's presence was entirely gratuitous and self-indulgent. Auli'i was sweet and cute as always. She did better than I expected for a live performance even though her voice cracked during that final high note.

Moana is trending on Twitter because of it. That's what you get when Disney and Broadway fans unite and attack! It's sad that people will play the race card for literally anything. "How Far I'll Go" was simply too conventional and forgettable. Had it been written by anyone else, it wouldn't have even been nominated. Fans should at least take solace that it lost to a good song. The song "We Belong Together" that won over "I See the Light" was absolute garbage.

If Moana had come out another year then it could have won best animated feature or best song but it never had a chance this year. And although I loved it, Zootopia and City of Stars were definitely far more deserving.

I agree, even though I can enjoy HWIG to some degree. I couldn't watch Miranda's prologue; I just find him so inexplicably cringeworthy. I turned back to the show when Cravalho was singing.

I don't think "How Far I'll Go" as a singular song does the Moana soundtrack or Auli'i's performance justice to be honest. "I Am Moana" and "Know Who You Are" are both such powerful moments and they build on earlier musical and thematic elements in the film, so I really enjoy the soundtrack as a whole piece. Many "princess" characters don't get the opportunity shine as much as the composers allowed her to, and that's a big reason why I loved this film so much.

Regardless, I knew La La Land was winning this category months ago so I wasn't expecting anything.

Still a lovely performance from Auli'i who I hope she a bright future ahead of her. She looked and sounded like a real life Disney princess, and was so poised for her age. And Lin-Manuel Miranda is just a joy to watch. One of the most creative and fresh artists in the business, and his enthusiasm is infectious and believable. The things he said about being inspired watching The Little Mermaid at the Oscars as a child, you know he loves the whole Disney experience and isn't taking it for granted. I assume it won't be his last appearance.
