After ten years, I've finally found my old Belle and the Beast: The New Adventures comic book!

Image

It contains five stories that serve as a "prequel" to Beauty and the Beast and I always loved reading it before I'd read the actual BATB comic book. I'm not sure how much the original filmmakers/story team had in the development of the stories (several are credited in the "Special Thanks"), but the five stories are really good! Of course, it probably has more to do with my nostalgia and sentimentality for the stories rather than their actual quality. But re-reading them again after all these years, it felt like it was the actual backstory to Beauty and the Beast. And, just like the movie, they never mention Beast's name of Adam. ;) It would have been cool if it was mentioned in these stories, as it would have some canonical value.

Here's the stories:

"Bewitched" - after one of the Beast's rages, Chip asks the others why Beast is so pissy. Lumiere and Cogsworth talk about when Beast and company first arrived in the town and their coach almost hits an old woman, as well as a hunting event from his youth where a crow swerves down at him, causing him to miss shooting a mother deer with her fawn. In addition to seeing just how rotten Beast was in his pre-enchantment, we also see that he was a serious student and very kind to Chip.

"Bothered" - Maurice is tinkering with a truffle-finding machine that includes the family pig, Pierre. Belle is upset that all the boys in their town are...boys. None of them have the intellect she wants to have a conversation with, they just want to roughhouse and play. Three boys "kidnap" Belle whilst she's walking through town and lock her in a dungeon (they're playing pirates). However, before she can be set free, a bear scares them away. She's later found by Maurice and Pierre, who were searching for truffles.

"Bewildered" - Beast is listening to Music Box when Lumiere and Cogsworth decide to try to teach Beast about dancing and reading poetry again. Beast struggles with both and proclaims, "Love is for...HUMANS!". He goes into a rage, and accidentally smashes Music Box, who cannot be repaired. Saddened that his favorite toy (pre-Enchantment) is destroyed, the Beast runs off in a sad and angry rage. This actually creates a continuity issue with Beauty and the Beast as there's a shot of Music Box in the fight scene during "The Mob Song" between the Enchanted Objects and the Townspeople.

"Elsewhere" - Belle and her father are returning after a botched washing-machine demonstration when Belle decides to go exploring in the forest, not fearing superstitious Maurice's concerns and his "No one ever goes through those woods!". An owl attacks Belle before she strays too far and she returns to Maurice. A wolf later comes by intent on attacking them as well, causing them to leave quickly.

"Elsewhen" - Beast has been sitting at his chair looking out for hours, and the staff decide to make him a great dinner to cheer him up. He never shows up, and so they go to bed. Chip then hears something and goes to the West Wing to find Beast gone. He and Footstool leave the castle and find that Beast has fallen down a cliff. Footstool returns to the castle and gets help, and they bring Beast back. Beast is upset because he can't even be a proper animal, and in his rage, accidentally sends Chip flying through the air. He catches him just in time, and the two sleep peacefully.

Throughout some of the stories, the Enchantress appears in various forms, though only the reader knows it's her as the forms she takes (old woman, crow, owl, bear, wolf, etc.) always have a certain glimmer in one eye, noting that it's the same character. So the way it reads, the Enchantress has always been watching over both, knowing that they'd be fated to meet one day. It kind of gives the whole "Beauty and the Beast" story a different spin as it implies it was always Belle and Beast's destiny to meet and fall in love.

One of them is Season 3 episode "The One Where Monica And Richard Are Just Friends", which starts in a video rental store with, coincidentally or not, a shot of few Disney videos, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin among others.

I was re-watching Friends, it caught my attention and I just wanted to share it :)... It wasn't really worth a thread of its own, so...
Whoa! Really?! THE Robby Benson that voiced the Beast?!

That reminds me of "Tales from Agrabah". Limiting one movie's universe to only what happened in the movie itself always struck me as unimaginative and restrictive. That's why I don't mind story continuations (unless it's fan fiction), regardless of the medium, as long as they pay respect to the original work and keep characters' personalities intact.

Anyway, I'd love to read that, is there any chance we could see some scans?

I had those stories too! But I didn't have this particular compilation, I actually had a collection of several individual issues. I wish I hadn't lost all my early 90's comics, these stories were enjoyable and I'd love to page through them again. :)

I have those as well. I'd page through them more often if my practically never used stereo didn't sit atop my comic trunk. I need more space so I can get at things like that, ha.

LOL! I know the feeling. ;) My old room when I lived with my dad used to be *so* crowded with collectibles.

Of all the Disney comics I had based on the features, these and The Little Mermaid sets (the ones that starred Celia) were probably among my favorites.

Wow, I don't remember Celia, and I'd be surprised if I missed any Little Mermaid comics (as that is one of my more specific Disney obsessions). I wonder if I have those.

Not to get too far off-topic, but I wanted to add this real quick . . .

Once again, I had the individual comics, two sets actually since there were two different sets of covers (one was drawn especially for the comics, the other were screencaps of the film). I think in this case I also had the compilation "Cartoon Tales" book like the B&tB one pictured here.

Here's a little more about them along with some scans. I've been wanting to draw Celia again one of these days (did quite a few times in high school).

Since you guys are discussing Beauty and the Beast comic, I'd decided to scan some of the BatB pgs from the manga Kilala Princess. US only released the two japanese volumes. They never released volumes containing Aurora, Cinderella, Jasmine and Belle. Here's some BatB scans.
I'll do the others another time.

Seeing the pictures of Celia and all, she looks more familiar, and I know I have the individual issues (both the first 4 and the longer series). I hope I have all of them, but I don't actually remember the Christmas cover, but I still probably have it. I need to check, because I love Disney CHristmas comics. I might not have the Cartoon Tales versions though, as I usually flipped through those on the rare instance that I'd find them, and I'd only buy them if they had stories that I didn't have in regular comic issues (like, I think I have a Darkwing one, but I know I missed out on other good original ones because they were just hard for me to find in that format).

I have the first U.S. released Kilala Princess comic. Is the U.S. done with it, or might they release the rest eventually? I wanted to get the other issues, but I never found them in good shape locally (I'll get them online eventually, but I hate that because half the time I get stuff in bad condition). The Belle one looks really cool! And I didn't even get into the story since the first one doesn't really.

Tokyopop really fuck it up.

You see, in Japan, there is only 5 volumes total.
vol 1-shows snow white
vol 2-shows ariel
vol 3-cinderella
vol 4-Belle and Aurora
vol 5-Jasmine

What Tokyopop did was divided on volume into two. Vol 1 became vol 1 and 2. Tokyopop would of end up with 10 volumes. Anyway, Tokyopop basically dropped the title. So you probably won't be getting the rest of the series in in US. This is why I went and brought the Japanese ones instead.

LOL Why am I not surprise you would say that. After all to you, NOTHING can compare to the work created god known as Disney! But seriously, this book is aimed for little Japanese girls. Get a life. The story sucks and is cliche beyond hell, but by no means does the art suck. yea Belle a little manga-fied but then again manga was influence by Disney in first place and Belle here doesn't look bad.

And David Letterman sucks as a tv host. He's unfunny.

Disney Comics

Post by Disney Duster »

MODERATORS CAN WE HAVE THIS MADE INTO A DISNEY COMICS TOPIC?

I'm gonna do an Escapay, which strangely he should have done himself...
Disney Comics

I know that you posted those because this a Beauty and the Beast topic but this is really to talk about the film. I think it's unfair to talk about continuations when talking about the film. I mean the witch survived in Snow White comics and I wouldn't talk about that in the Snow White topic (except hypothetically, not canonically). I'd talk about her death which prevented her from harming Snow White or the dwarfs ever again, thus happily ever after like how the movie says it ends.

Anyway, Super Aurora, I'd really love to see any of the scans you are willing to put up. I bought the U.S. versions too, and was disappointed they stopped (and right before Cinderella!).

The art does not suck, it is really good, but the Disney characters manga-style do look a little unsettling and funky. I have to admit it makes me think Disney's art is better...I mean, it's more realistic. But they are two seperate styles, and the manga art is still quite good art, and beautiful. It's different, I'll just say I like Disney's art better.

If you had been in the NJ Trilogy's household two nights ago when my brother came upstairs saying "Well, I couldn't find our old cardboad Disney books, but I found these!" and heard my scream and exclamation of "OMG, YOU FOUND IT! I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR IT FOR AGES!" you'd understand why I was so excited to even post about finding it at all. I'm sorry you felt I posted it in the wrong thread. I simply wanted to share my joy at finding something BATB-related that was from my youth, and that I always considered one and the same with the film. It's a Beauty and the Beast topic and naturally I felt it belongs in the Beauty and the Beast discussion thread. Much more so than in the broad Walt Disney Comics and Related Disney Comics thread.

Mooks, I'm scanning the first few pages now. Will try to have them up within an hour.
