Disney's Divinity wrote: Wed Jun 28, 2023 3:26 pm Luke's review comparison of this film's attempt to be a Zootopia and ending up more in the zone of the Bee Movie and Shark Tale feels apt, imo. I similarly feel like the hand-drawn look of the faces and the 3D of the bodies for the fire characters doesn't quite land, although I guess points there for trying to go for a little something out of the box? Or, well, something on the level of a Maui anyway, as far as that character's hand-drawn tattoos. Actually, certain stills give me the feeling of The Amazing World of Gumball, as far as the air and earth characters occasionally verging on the feel of live-action in their weightiness, the hand-drawn of the fire characters' faces, the basic 3D of the water characters, etc. And I agree that names like Ripple, Ember, and Element City make even Cars' often cringey puns seem profound in comparison.

A shame if the Up short isn't very good either if I end up agreeing with him on that, too. I'm not fond of Up as a whole, but I did always like the Carl character. It's really just everything else about it that gets on my nerves (the little boy, the dogs, the bland villain, etc.). I'm glad he liked The Flash better than this film since it looks good to me, a shame it didn't perform well at the box office since it does look good.
Oh, my mom and I just saw this last night and it is A LOT Better than we were expecting, and how you’re making it look here, including Luke’s review. I can tell you that it is far better than the first Zootopia, as it actually utilizes its concepts in much more clever ways instead of falling flat in certain areas like Zootopia did with Clawhowser Etc. it’s also very meaningful and poignant In things that it illustrates, and I’ve only personally to me but to literally anybody. I actually consider the movie to be pretty much perfect, and any kind of imperfections it has are only simply ones that you could find in any kind of movie, as it was even stated possibly by Luke or anyone else who write reviews for this side that just because movies are predictable it doesn’t mean that they are bad, of which this one is certainly not the most, as you don’t completely know where they’re going with it, and even in the moments that are (Perhaps) Predictable, It feels very genuine and by that absolutely brilliant By how they handle things. It’s definitely worth seeing on the big screen, and even if you’re not a hard-core Pixar fan, I’m pretty sure that you will find something of value with it as it doesn’t even feel immediately similar to Pixar is past works either :-)

So this thing is developing some crazy good legs at the Box Office. It’s passed $300 million and if the drops continue like this it will pass $500 million or close to that range.

I guess between this and Puss in Boots 2 people are just a bit more reluctant with animated features post pandemic? Good old word of mouth seems to be doing the trick in both cases.

And to think this was declared dead on opening weekend by all the amateur analysts. Which apparently everyone is nowadays.

Yeah, it's impressive that it still landed in the top five a month out. Hopefully it'll help recover some of the ground lost by its disastrous opening, though, lamentably, probably not enough to still be a "hit."

I'm glad word of mouth is working and the film is not such a big flop after all. Here are some more details about its box office numbers:
The film made a spectacular $28.2 million on its 5th weekend, almost matching that opening weekend haul, and has hit a total of $311.7 million at time of writing. Currently, the film is now looking at a final box office total of between $420 million to $500 million. As a result, it has surpassed the underperforming Pixar film Lightyear from last year, which earned $226.4 million worldwide, in addition to Disney's Encanto, which made $256.8 million worldwide. If this trend continues, it will become Disney's most successful animated film since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Elemental was released in my country on Friday but I still haven't been able to see it. I'll share my thoughts once I do.

The movie was very mediocre and we barely saw Element City outside of the Fire Town and the water house

We saw a lot of the city around the beginning and middle, and I would say sprinkled throughout we saw a lot of decent parts of it :-) I wouldn’t call it “mediocre” actually it’s my favourite movie of the year so far :-) I would actually call Oppenheimer more mediocre than this……

It's your personal favorite movie and I respect it, me and my cousin disliked the movie honestly.

And I have no interest in watching Oppenheimer

That would be a great thing for Pixar. Those guys haven't had a smash hit in awhile.

Came in not expecting anything anything for this one, but Little Dude has been super excited for it ever since the first teaser.

Loved the immigrant aspect of the story, and feeling like there’s no room for personal choices when you’re seemingly guilted into pleasing your family.

Also loved that Ember is more of an artist than being suited to taking over her father’s store. I thought Wade might come off as too cheesy with being overly-optimistic and possibly naïve, but he felt earnest and it made for a nice balance in the growing relationship.

Not sure if the world-building makes much sense, but people always forgive that about Pixar films anyway. :eye: It’s an absolutely beautiful film that couldn’t have been visually pulled off even a few years ago, and Ember felt like much more than just a rigged CG model acting as a puppet. Nothing against puppets, mind you. :kermit:

I’ll definitely enjoy it again once it starts streaming.

I am happy for its success, although I still have not seen it. I wish my local budget movie theater hadn’t gone belly up with the pandemic! Anyway, I wonder how much more money this movie, and TLM, would have made without the existence of Disney+? Yesterday, a coworker who is a big Haunted Mansion fan was telling me he really enjoyed the movie after seeing it in theaters, but encouraged me to wait for it on Disney+ because he did not enjoy his experience at the theater itself (there were issues with the sound system, apparently, and of course the expense for tickets and food).

I’m really happy this is proving all the naysayers wrong. And even if it’s not perfect we need original animated features to do well to prevent us from getting flooded by more sequels, remakes and other IP cash grabs.

Audiences embracing Elemental after rejecting Lightyear just a year ago is a pretty clear message.

And people are willing to go to the movies for great animation. Aside from Barbie/Oppenheimer this is the box office story of the year.

Elemental passed $400M WW yesterday and might pass $500M WW by Labor Day, depending on how it does in Japan when it opens there this weekend, meaning it'll breakeven by Labor Day weekend and avoid being a money loser for Disney. A pyrrhic win for Pixar that gives them good luck going into Elio next March.

I am very happy this movie is doing well. It's hardly perfect, but it's a good movie and deserves this. Maybe it will send a message to Disney/Pixar.

Now Umbrellafish...

You know, when they launched Disney+ I knew it would devastate home media... it didn't occur to me it would also severely affect theaters (which is also very linked to the ridiculously short periods between theater/digital/streaming). I have heard many times about many movies "oh, just wait to stream it".... back in the day, no one said "oh, I won't see it in theaters, I'll just wait till it's on network TV... A YEAR FROM NOW"

And there have even been instances for me that I want to see a movie, and if I don't go in the first 2 weeks, the movie is already available digitally and end up not going to the theater. I don't know who came up with the current model... but I don't think it works.

Pixar’s “Elemental” Digital/4K UHD/Blu-Ray/DVD Release Details Announced
Disney has announced that the latest Pixar animated film, “Elemental”, will arrive on digital platforms, including Amazon, Apple and Vudu, to buy in the United States on August 15th 2023. The film will be released on physical formats, including 4K UHD, Blu-Ray and DVD, on September 26th 2023.

Should Disney follow a similar pattern to previous releases, we should expect to see “Elemental” available on Disney+ shortly after the physical media release, though Disney will announce this at a later date, to try to encourage more digital and physical media purchases.

Disney and Pixar’s “Elemental” is an original feature film set in Element City, where residents of Fire, Water, Earth and Air live together. The story introduces Ember, a tough, quick-witted and fiery young woman, whose friendship with a fun, sappy, go-with-the-flow guy named Wade challenges her beliefs about the world they live in. Directed by Peter Sohn (“The Good Dinosaur,” “Partly Cloudy” short), written by John Hoberg & Kat Likkel and Brenda Hsueh, produced by Denise Ream (“The Good Dinosaur,” “Cars 2”), and featuring the voices of Leah Lewis and Mamoudou Athie as Ember and Wade.

Here’s a look at the special features:

Short Film

Carl’s Date – Written and directed by Academy Award® nominee and Emmy® Award winner Bob Peterson and produced by Kim Collins, this all-new short, “Carl’s Date,” finds Carl reluctantly agreeing to go on a date with a lady friend —but admittedly with no idea how dating works these days. Ever the helpful friend, Dug steps in to calm Carl’s pre-date jitters and offer some tried-and-true tips for making friends — if you’re a dog. “Carl’s Date” opened in theaters in front of Disney and Pixar’s “Elemental.”

Featurettes

Ember and Wade – Take a deeper look at the development of main characters Ember and Wade, from early designs to final effects, and learn how the complex work of the technical and character teams brought these characters to life.
Next Stop: Element City – Explore how Element City is built to accommodate its different inhabitants. Director Peter Sohn and crew members share insights about the evolution of the designed world, as well as some of the research that inspired its unique look.
Paths to Pixar: The Immigrant Experience – Hear from first-generation filmmakers on the Elemental crew as they share their journeys to Pixar. Discover how Elemental’s real-world themes of sacrifice and identity, amongst many others, reflect or diverge from their own lived experiences.

Director Peter Sohn introduces five scenes that are all illustrated, set to music, timed, and voiced, but are not included in the final version of Elemental.

Intro Ember – An alternate opening in which our hero Ember helps a newly immigrated Fire family navigate through, and acclimate to, Element City. Scene introduced by director Peter Sohn.
Mom Rejects Wade – Ember’s traditional parents learn that she’s enamored with watery Wade…and it doesn’t go well. Scene introduced by story supervisor Jason Katz.
Dante Challenge – In an attempt to keep Ember apart from Wade, Bernie tasks her with finding a place to live for newcomer Dante, who Wade finds himself rather enamored with. Scene introduced by story artist Nira Liu.
Brook Dinner – Ember joins Wade for dinner at his home, in this abandoned storyline in which Wade’s mother, Brook, is revealed to be the villain diverting water into Firetown. Scene introduced by story artist Anna Benedict.
Beach Proposal – Sharing a tender moment on the beach, Ember and Wade propose marriage to each other. Scene introduced by story artists Yung-Han Chang and Le Tang.
Audio Commentary

Elementary Filmmaker Commentary – Join director Peter Sohn, supe tech Sanjay Bakshi, supervising animator Mike Venturini, and directing animator Gwendelyn Enderoglu as they provide insight into the making of this remarkable animated feature while you watch it.
