On a similar note, I really dislike it when they describe a new Disney princess as unique simply because she doesn't behave princessy. Like Tiana was described as unique because she had personal goals beyond romance, Merida was the antithesis to the "normal" heroine, and Anna was clumsy and awkward. But all three are not atypical characters.Atlantica wrote:
This isn't pinning all my irritation on Kristen Bell, this video is just an example, but it it annoys the heck out of me when each new Disney Princess comes along, they automatically rubbish their successors. Newer doesn't always equal better. Disney does this constantly with their female characters and it really ticks me off.
(I just came across this video when searching for Frozen interviews etc; felt compelled to post it here when she does " " with a slight scrunched up face).
I love Anna & Elsa, I think they are brilliant characters to add to the Disney roster, but they aren't better than others that have gone before them. Just different.
I think the last female lead to want a guy was Ariel; every one since had other ambitions.
Merida, contrary to Pixar's claims, is not the first rebellious princess.
And Anna is not the first cutsey bubbly girl; that would be Rapunzel from three years prior.
The newer Disney princesses are all proclaimed to be different and fresh, but with the possible exception of Elsa (as she is more introverted than the others), they are pretty typical characters in modern films.
