Is it unrealistic to expect some information about the dvd version on a site called dvdizzy.com? And is it unfair to criticize Disney's policies toward dvd when around 80% of consumers still buy dvd-only? How is that "beating the drums"?SWillie! wrote:Goliath. You're still pounding the DVD drum?

Maybe you think my complaints on ignoring dvd is silly. I think all the drama over the covers is silly. Ah well...

Only when you consider that the forum is inhabited by fans and not admins sharing the official information . . . that's reserved for the main part of the site, and we don't really get anything official until they're given press releases and review discs. And it appears that most of the hardcore fans have moved on to Blu-ray.
Like it or not, Blu-ray is the new "premium" for the hardcore fans. Not saying it justifies anything or that it's unfair to criticize, but even if 80% of all consumers still purchase DVD's only, the hardcore fans become more adamant about the most premium versions newly available.Goliath wrote:And is it unfair to criticize Disney's policies toward dvd when around 80% of consumers still buy dvd-only? enigmawing, you stole the words from my mouth. Goliath, I understand expecting DVD news on a site that has been giving DVD news for years. But like enigmawing said, it seems that 99% of the hardcore fans (who make up the majority of this site) have moved on. I was really just kind of poking fun at you a little.
But, I also am not quite sure I believe your 80% statistic. I haven't looked that far into it myself, but a quick search leads to several articles stating that 2012 will be the year that Blu-ray sales exceed DVD. Based on that, I doubt it could possibly still be a 80-20 ratio. Maybe a year ago, but a lot has changed in a year.

I stand by DVD's still, however I have come to realize there is room enough on the same shelf for both formats. I have not been happy with much of Disney's business decisions deal with either format, and sometimes I wonder if I should cut my losses and put my money to better use then lining Disney's pocket books. But dang it, I LOVE Disney animations and classics Disney shows and films, so I keep putting up with it, for now.
I think this debate is tiered. Blu-ray fans need to realize DVD is far from dead and many people still buy DVD over Blu-ray and that many DVD release of various films are in many ways better then Blu-ray releases, at least when it comes to extras. DVD fans need to realize tech geeks and movie fans boy will go after the latest and the greatest, which is Blu-ray, and that the studios, especially Disney, are going to cater to that crowd and push the issue as there is money to be made from it in their view.
As I stated before, both can stand on the same shelf, and both are under attack from a far more cunning villain: digital steaming/ downloaded films. For me personally, I keep my DVD's with my Blu-rays so far as Disney Animated Classics go and I refuse to buy any Disney Blu-ray that include the DtV film. As far as I'm concerned, it was never released on Blu-ray.
Back to the matter at hand, I don't get the feeling the practice of putting DtV films with the Animated Classics are over. I'm surprised under Lassiter it is being allowed, and the craziest part? From Disney Home Entertainment's perspective, it's a good thing.

Although I'm disappointed in Pocahontas II's inclusion on this set, I feel the same way. At the end of the day, I'm just happy Pocahontas is being released on Blu-ray at all!enigmawing wrote:Personally, I'm not going to let the attachment of a weaker movie keep me from owning a favorite film in HD.

Exactly. And maybe it makes me a bad Disney fan, but I don't have the energy to be nit-picky and anal about how Disney chooses to release their films. If I can get a good copy of the film itself in HD, I'm happy.singerguy04 wrote:Although I'm disappointed in Pocahontas II's inclusion on this set, I feel the same way. Oh, and when it comes to Blu-ray vs. DVD sales, here is an excerpt from an article I found from November:
You can read the entire article hereSo how much did Blu-ray help the overall increase in entertainment spending? A lot. Blu-ray was up 58 percent, electronic sellthrough was up 13 percent and VOD increased by five percent. DVD sales are way down again, rental revenue is down again and brick and mortar stores are hurting. Only one format is truly thriving, and that's Blu-ray.
^ The fact that BluRay was "up 58 percent" doesn't say a thing about its percentage in the total home video market. It just says it's up 58% compared to... last year? Then you still don't know how it stacks up against dvd.
But, I prefer using my own common sense over trusting partisan websites.

Who's in denial? Have you been in a dvd store recently? 80% of all stores are stocked with dvd's, while bd-discs are just around 20% of what they sell. And have you spoken to anybody outside of your little circle of hardcore film freaks? How many people have BluRay? I don't know of many. Reviews of new titles in magazines and newspapers? 9 out of 10 times they're reviewing dvd's, not bd-discs. Give-away contests? They give out dvd's, not bd-discs. Most people don't have BluRay and are not planning on buying it; plain and simple.Kyle wrote:Your on a sinking ship, blu ray has come way down in cost, and I'm not even sure I believe your 80% statistic at all. HD penetration has gone way up yet your still in denial?

I never said I knew how it currently stacks up against DVD, but it does seem clear DVD is declining while Blu-ray is growing.Goliath wrote:^ The fact that BluRay was "up 58 percent" doesn't say a thing about its percentage in the total home video market. Goliath, you also have to take into account that you're halfway around the world from a lot of us. When I go into a store, I'd say it's usually close to 50/50 of what is stocked, and certainly blu-ray is what is being advertised front and center. You walk into Best Buy and half to work your way around the blu-ray section in order to get to the DVDs.
And a good chunk of people I talk to outside of school (film school) own blu-rays. The fact that PS3 works with BD seems to be a strong factor. At least that's my experience.
I think it's safe to assume that since the US is such a large market, new products can become more prominent faster. Not that I know anything about market trends in the Netherlands... just an assumption.
