I got such a sweet surprise today! In my work mailbox was a brown paper package tied up with strings… and inside was the new Little Golden Book about Julie Andrews. The gift giver was anonymous but I think I have a good guess as to who it was.

Anyway, it is a very sweet book! The illustrations are very pretty with scenes from My Fair Lady, Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music, and Victor/Victoria. But my personal favorite is an illustration of Julie receiving her damehood from Queen Elizabeth— in real life, there were no photographers present when Julie met the Queen so it’s nice to have an illustrator imagine what that moment must have been like!

They also got me a loverly little lanyard that looks like Mary Poppins’s measuring tape! I used to have a similar one that got too worn down, so excited to have a new one.

Julie Andrews is joining the line-up of TCM’s Summer of the Stars for the first time ever in 2024!! Lots of underseen Julie Andrews movies!

Here’s the line-up airing this Sunday, August 4th:

6 am: That's Life (1986)

8 am: The Americanization of Emily (1964)

10:15 am: Darling Lili (1970)

12:45 pm: The Tamarind Seed (1974)

3 pm: Torn Curtain (1966)

5:15 pm: Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967)

8 pm: Victor/Victoria (1982)

10:30 pm: Hawaii (1966)

1:45 am: 10 (1979)

4 am: The Man Who Loved Women (1983)

Of course, I assume Disney jealously guards the rights to Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music. But I wish TCM had secured from Disney the rights to Star! which is one of my favorite Julie Andrews films, released by Fox in 1968. I assume we’ll never get it on Blu-ray or streaming, either, because Disney doesn’t seem that interested in their back catalogue of Fox films.

What a fantastic lineup of Julie Andrews movies on TCM's Summer of the Stars! I'm excited to catch some of her lesser-known films, like The Americanization of Emily and The Tamarind Seed. And of course, Victor/Victoria is a classic! I completely agree with you about Star! - it's a shame that Disney doesn't seem interested in releasing it on Blu-ray or streaming. It's a great film that deserves more attention. Maybe someday they'll reconsider and make it available to fans. Until then, I'll have to keep dreaming of a Star! restoration

Another fan of Star! It’s probably the Julie Andrews movie I return to the most often. If I’m cleaning or doing chores, I can have it playing and every time I tune in there’s something different and entertaining happening. Including the dramatic scenes!

Before they closed their doors, I had really hoped Twilight Time would put out Star! since they made a lot of deals with Fox. But alas, that wasn’t to be.

A new documentary, American Masters: Blake Edwards, about Julie Andrews’ late husband, director Blake Edward’s (The Pink Panther, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Victor/Victoria) premiered last night on PBS.

I watched it this morning and enjoyed it— there were pictures of Julie and Blake’s wedding that I’m not sure I’d ever seen before. Many people who worked with or were admirers of Blake Edwards were interviewed (was not aware Rian Johnson was a big fan, but it makes sense). I thought Leonard Maltin was particularly insightful. Of course, Julie was interviewed and also provided narration for the doc. She looked beautiful in her filmed bits. The documentary opened with a great animated opening about Blake’s life and career, in the style of the Pink Panther intros.

Recommended for anyone who’d like to learn more about Blake Edwards or his work and life with Julie Andrews.

Hey UmbrellaFish, sorry for replying to this post this late, but I just found this thread. Is this the book you're talking about?

Aww, it's a very nice book, with cute illustrations. I've ordered it, along with the one about Barbra Streisand.

I don't know if this has been posted here. It's a Q&A where Mrs. Andrews participated, for a documentary about her late husband.

Julie Andrews shared this statement encouraging donations to the charity she co-founded, Operation USA, in the wake of the devastating LA wildfires:

“Having spent so much of my life in Los Angeles, I am deeply saddened and concerned by the wildfires that are causing such devastation there. I’ve served on OpUSA’s board for 45 years, and have been so impressed by their efforts to deliver humanitarian aid worldwide when disaster strikes. Their team is now working around the clock to help people in shelters all around the LA area. If you can be of help, please visit their website, www.opusa.org and consider offering your support. Thank you!”

Tooth Fairy, the last on screen appearance of Julie Andrews, was released 15 years ago today.

It can almost drive!

Tooth Fairy was Julie’s last on-screen appearance in a movie, but in 2017, Julie Andrews starred in a children’s series for Netflix called Julie’s Greenroom. It was produced by the Jim Henson Company and also starred puppets from their workshop. They only made 13 episodes, but from interviews at the time, it’s clear Julie and her daughter (and show co-creator), Emma Walton Hamilton, wanted to do more. It was an educational program that taught kids about the performing arts.

I have not watched it since it premiered, but it was sweet and featured a lot of big guest stars— Josh Groban, Idina Menzel, Carol Burnett. She also sang again. They were simple children’s songs, of course, but it’s always a joy to hear Julie sing.

That does sound wonderful. I don't have a Netflix subscription anymore, but if I ever renew it, I'll watch it.

Brelly, I don't know if such a thing exists, but would you not love to see a pro-shot or even a bootleg of Julie in the original Broadway My Fair Lady? I so wish I could see such a thing.

AFAIK there are no recordings of Julie Andrews in My Fair Lady that weren’t made for television broadcast like appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show and a special called The Fabulous Fifties. About 10 years ago, Julie directed a revival of My Fair Lady in Australia that was meant to be a recreation of the original 1956 Broadway production (staging, lighting, costuming all the same as the 1956 version etc). I don’t know if there’s a recording out there of that production, I haven’t looked into it, but it might be the closest we’ll ever get to seeing that original stage production— short of the invention of a time machine!

OTOH, I think there are some sound recordings of Julie Andrews onstage in Camelot, floating on YouTube somewhere.
