Re: Moana
Disney will be submitting three songs from Moana to the Oscars. It's the most songs from a WDAS movie submitted since The Princess and the Frog. When the Oscar rules changed and only up to two songs could be nominated per film, Disney decided on submitting a single song to maximize their chances of a win (with Winnie the Pooh and Moana being the only exceptions so far).
From 2005 — 2016:
Chicken Little
• One Little Slip
Meet the Robinsons
• Another Believer
• Little Wonders
Bolt
• Barking at the Moon
• I Thought I Lost You
The Princess and the Frog
• Almost There
• Down in New Orleans
• Ma Belle Evangeline
• Never Knew I Needed
Tangled
• I See the Light
Winnie the Pooh
• The Backson Song
• So Long
* Fun Fact: The Lopezes wanted to also submit "Everything Is Honey" but Disney wouldn't let them.
Wreck-It Ralph
• When Can I See You Again?
Frozen
• Let It Go
Big Hero 6
• Immortals
Zootopia
• Try Everything
Moana
• How Far I’ll Go
• We Know The Way
• You’re Welcome

Re: Moana
I had been wondering for a while why in the marketing they were having Auli'i's name all the time (I mean, Disney wasn't advertising Anika Noni Rose's, Mandy Moore's, Kristen Bell's, or Idina Menzel's names like this), but then I just thought that it's probably because her name is obviously a Polynesian name, so people maybe will be less up in arms about cultural misappropriation...

Isn't there an emotional song Moana sings that made people cry during screenings? Shouldn't they put that instead of You're Welcome?

Re: Moana
What this tells me is that Disney doesn’t see a clear favorite among the film’s songs. With Frozen, although there are several great songs, “Let It Go” clearly stood out as the pinnacle and there was no reason to submit "FtFTiF" or "DYWtBaS?" I’m more disturbed because “We Know the Way” and “You’re Welcome” were submitted… I was hoping HFIG would surprise me and be a better song than those two, but clearly they didn’t think so. I’m guessing I’ll be passing on this soundtrack until I can get it for almost nothing like with Tangled/TP&TF.Sotiris wrote:Disney will be submitting three songs from Moana to the Oscars. Listening to most often lately:
Taylor Swift ~ "Elizabeth Taylor"
Katy Perry ~ "bandaid"
Meghan Trainor ~ "Still Don't Care"
Re: Moana
If you don't mind me asking, where did you find out about that?Sotiris wrote:Disney will be submitting three songs from Moana to the Oscars.
That's likely. Another possible reason could be that they don't want to deprive Dwayne Johnson or Te Vaka (if they have contributed more to "We Know the Way", for example) of having a chance to have their songs nominated. Though, truth be told, Disney hasn't cared about that in the past.Disney's Divinity wrote:What this tells me is that Disney doesn’t see a clear favorite among the film’s songs. I think it's just because they are using Dwayne Johnson's name to promote the film. And they can't put his name in trailers, etc. and not put the name of the film's protagonist.blackcauldron85 wrote:I had been wondering for a while why in the marketing they were having Auli'i's name all the time (I mean, Disney wasn't advertising Anika Noni Rose's, Mandy Moore's, Kristen Bell's, or Idina Menzel's names like this), but then I just thought that it's probably because her name is obviously a Polynesian name, so people maybe will be less up in arms about cultural misappropriation...
Maybe those people were referring to "How Far I’ll Go" or a reprise of it, if it has one.disneyprincess11 wrote:Isn't there an emotional song Moana sings that made people cry during screenings? Shouldn't they put that instead of You're Welcome?

Re: Moana
Something from La La Land is probably winning that category regardless (original musical and current favorite to win Best Picture among other awards)
Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBUXcNTjviI
Of course people will call that an upset and failure here, but I think Moana is easily the underdog considering the enthusiastic critical acclaim La La Land is receiving, which is rare for a musical especially a live action original one.

I think Disney will try & sway Academy voters to give Lin Manuel Miranda the Original Song Oscar to complete his EGOT. All I know is Zootopia better win Best Animated Feature. But I'm having doubts. If they give it to Dory, that's it. The Oscars are Pixar's pet.Lady Cluck wrote:Something from La La Land is probably winning that category regardless (original musical and current favorite to win Best Picture among other awards)

Ok, thanks. It's strange, but I can't see the categories on the website. It still says "coming soon" on my computer.Sotiris wrote:From the Disney Awards website.D82 wrote:If you don't mind me asking, where did you find out about that?
So, "We Know the Way" has been written by Opetaia Foa'i and Lin-Manuel Miranda, while "How Far I’ll Go" and "You’re Welcome" only by Miranda. That explains why the music of the former fits more with the setting, while the other two are more "Broadway".
I don't know if the songs from "La La Land" are the favourites to win or not, but I guess they'll be at least strong competitors to Moana. The song featured in that trailer is from the movie and is called “Audition (The Fools Who Dream)”. There's another trailer that shows another of the film's songs, “City of Stars”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=je0aAf2f8XQLady Cluck wrote:Something from La La Land is probably winning that category regardless (original musical and current favorite to win Best Picture among other awards)

Re: Moana
I just assume La La Land will be the favorite because of the momentum it'll build with other categories. The Academy is going to eat it up and according to the experts and journalists, it's in the mix for Best Picture, Director, Actress, Screenplay, and other technical awards. Music seems like a no brainer if it's even breaking into those competitive categories, but we'll see.
I don't want Finding Dory to win Best Animated either. Better than I expected but still just satisfactory, nothing special or memorable about it. It shouldn't even be nominated with so many strong smaller choices from this year.
People already acting like this film and its music are garbage probably is making me underestimate its Oscar chances for now
Not that this will be Frozen level success but it was funny how people were predicting that would bomb at the box office because of the perceived lack of hype and juvenile marketing (just read the thread here if you don't believe me). Hopefully there are elements in Moana that also surprise the skeptics.

Re: Moana
I am so tired of this "anti-Disney Princess" attacks on Moana. Disney is pretty much saying that to be a Disney Princess, you are weak and a "bad role model." It's really insulting to be honest. And it's funny, considering their biggest franchise and their biggest movie of all time is about two PRINCESSES (Well, a queen.) I can picture Auli'l not wanting Moana to be considered a princess because of feminism today, but there's no way John Musker and Ron Clements would not want Moana to be a princess. And them saying "she's the only bad-ass heroine we have created," is appalling when Ariel, Jasmine, and Tiana, WHO THEY CREATED, are strong and bad ass. And the fact that this anti-Disney princess agenda finds itself in the movie is so upsetting as well.
And Nobody's Disney Princess? What about POLYNESIANS, HAWAIIANS, NEW ZEALANDERS, AND ISLANDERS who miraculously got themselves a princess? So, if there's a disabled princess someday (who I hope to voice), does that means *NAME* is not my princess? Is Tiana not black people's princess? Pocahontas and Native Americans? Jasmine and Middle Easterns? Mulan and Asians? Or are they too "weak" to not be considered anyone's princess? Disney, what are you saying? What are your beliefs? Why are you spotlighting the princesses everywhere, but yet pandering them because they're "weak?" Decide!
Rant over.

Re: Moana
I also think La La Land is a strong contender to win Best Song. Moana does have Disney and Lin-Manuel Miranda in its corner, but La La Land is a best picture frontrunner and its songs are a major part of its appeal among those who have seen it. Moana will have to be a Frozen-sized success to possibly beat La La Land.
Interesting Taika Waititi is no longer credited for the screenplay, but then again, according to him, he was only involved early on in the production. We'll probably see him listed in the credits under "Additional Material by."Sotiris wrote:From the Disney Awards website. Re: Moana
I have to admit that at this point, this game Disney plays is crossing the line over into sexist territory. The biggest film of the Revival so far featured princesses. Some of Disney’s biggest films have featured princesses (God knows they don't mind making millions off them). This condescension they’re using is only encouraging audience sexism towards films with princesses, castigating them as “girl’s films” and intentionally implying that “girl’s films” are lesser films that can’t be enjoyed by male audience members.disneyprincess11 wrote:I am so tired of this "anti-Disney Princess" attacks on Moana. Which reminds me, when I made that post above about what Lasseter blamed for TP&TF so he wouldn’t have to blame himself, I forgot to include “princesses.”

Disney has released the track listing for the soundtrack. As well as the news that the credits song will be released tomorrow.

Interesting that there are 12 songs listed... Man, I hope this doesn't turn out to be another Princess and the Frog overstuffed songs movie... Cause that movie definitely needed to cut at least 2 songs.
