Wow, thanks disneyprincess11, if this is true than there are going to be a whole batch of great songs! I was getting worried because so far there was just that one trailer song, which did not sound like much.
The shot with Moana as a little girl and a lot of villagers is probably part of a musical number. Maybe there's a song montage that serves as a transition from toddler Moana to her when she's 16.
Regarding Maui's song, what I like about it so far is also the music. I still wish the songs had a more Polynesian sound, but I like it more than “How Far I’ll Go”. And we've only listened to a small portion of the song, I think we have to hear more to judge the lyrics. By the way, I'm not sure I understood all the words in it. Is it something similar to this? Probably not And I didn't understand the first line.
So what can I ...
You're welcome for the islands I caught from the sea
Hey, it's okay, it's okay
You're welcome. I guess it's just my way of being me
You're welcome. You're welcome
And thank you!

I actually do think he says "and thank you" during the last line. I can hear a "k" sound in there, and it would with the whole "your welcome" thing. It's probably sarcastic. I'm guessing that Maui is bitter because no one cares about his accomplishments anymore.
I don’t like the Maui song at all, but I’m not surprised. That’s why I wasn’t happy with Dwayne Johnson being cast. The Moana song is better, but it sounds like fodder on a pop/country album.
Listening to most often lately:
Taylor Swift ~ ~ "The Fate of Ophelia"
Taylor Swift ~ "Eldest Daughter"
Taylor Swift ~ "CANCELLED!"
This isn't the opening number. It's from Te Vaka. Lin said that two of the singers in the opening number are Chris Jackson and Phillipa Soo from Hamilton.

Where have you heard the song sung by Moana? I really would like to hear it.

PatrickvD wrote:I hate You're Welcome.... This makes me long for Randy Newman. It's that bad.
The verse is hideous and the chorus is catchy but in a negative, annoying way. It reminds me of 'Dig a Little Deeper' from TPatF, not in terms of melody but of song structure.

So, I guess it's not just me who finds the songs incredibly underwhelming so far? The only one I've liked is Moana's song and even that is just...mediocre.

I agree completely. We Know The Way sounds like it would not have even made the final cut of Brother Bear.
Underwhelming is an understatement. This makes Frozen (which I'm quite neutraal about) sound like Beauty and the Beast.
Now, I can hear You're Welcome clearly. And I can hear the problems. The lyrics aren't bad. It is just very unfitting to the ancient setting ("Who Has Two Thumbs...This Guy! Yo!") The thing is I love Lin to death, but Alan Menken, the Lopezes for the most part, and even Randy Newman know how to fit a song to the setting. The lyrics to YW are pretty dated. The scene is very energetic and does give me a Disney feeling and DJ is clearly having fun and putting his heart into it. Hope the other songs work well, like Auli'l's solo.
Moreover, it seems like through Moana, Disney can't decide if this is a true Disney movie like PATF or trying to be hip and cool with Maui. It looks like it's inconsistent.
And more details about the soundtrack. There will be seven original songs, two reprises and two end credit songs. One is a version of "How Far I'll Go" performed by Canadian singer Alessia Cara, and the other, a version of "You're Welcome" performed by Jordan Fisher and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
