Well, they clearly have nothing positive to say about the film. It's like every week, there's a new article about Moana being racist & Disney cultural appropriation against Polynesians. And when someone tweets "I don't care what your white-ass thinks" that is clearly a bigot. Can you imagine if they were tweeting about Frozen/Tangled or Brave & tweeted "I don't care what your colored-ass thinks"? These people are taking this movie way to far.

It's almost like they want the movie to be racist. What a sad mindset these bigoted people have.

That post is so many levels of ignorant, due to the fact that Anna and Elsa's homeland is based on Norway. You know the funny thing is people have been siding with Maui's design, because he bucks the trend of Hollywood standard of attractiveness.
Your right. Because if Maui looked like Prince Philip or Flynn Rider, they would say he & Moana were romantically involved. I like Maui's design overall. Reminds me of John Silver & Quasimodo. Not every Disney guy has to resemble Prince Charming.

I'm going out on a limb here and guessing this was probably in response to a white person who was overly dismissive of a person of color's concerns about racism in a Disney movie (a studio with a history of problematic and sometimes offensive depictions of race)? I haven't seen much cause for racism in this particular film outside arguably Maui's design*, but I can at least recognize it would be difficult for me to understand how some things are racist since I am white.

I myself is a Brown skin Person of Color. But I'm not going to get involved in Moana is racist. As for Disney's racist past, it is what it is. Back when Song of the South came out, there were still Jim Crow laws & Colored/White waiting rooms & drinking fountains. Thankfully that doesn't exist here anymore. And Disney doesn't use White actors/actress to voice colored characters anymore like Lilo & Kenai were. Here is a image of a twitter rant I copied during the Maui costume controversy. Go eat Haggis & Die? Yeah, very mature lady.

Here is a Instagram video of Auli'i Cravalho announcing that Disney will be donating $500,000 to the Asian Pacific islander American scholarship fund. The response: They are a multi billion dollar industry..... they should be donating more....

Wow! I love it! Thanks disneyprincess11 for sharing it!

By the way, in that list of songs you recently posted, you said there's going to be a Kakamora song. I didn't know that. Where did you find out about it?

It was much earlier on this forum, I think. I was also told that the mom will have a song.

OK, thanks. Speaking of the songs, a while ago I found this Instagram post where Neysa Bové says she designed an outfit for Moana that she only wears for 6 seconds in the movie. Maybe that’s part of a song montage.

That's an unusual comparison. Disney's animated films as of late, whenever they depict a different culture, always try to depict them with as much respect as possible. It's a little odd to compare those such films with a satirical comedy meant as an equal opportunity offender.

^yeah, there's world of difference b/w Moana & Borat.

Im not crazy about his design nor outright detest it, but mostly b/c I know the reasoning behind it. He's meant to be the character to attract young boys to the film with a female protagonist. Boys really love fun clown(think Genie) or big lug(think Ralph) types, which is where Maui's design falls into.

I wasn't impressed by it at all. It sounded generic and forgettable.

I hope the rest of the songs will be better. I've not been impressed by the snippets of the songs I've heard so far.

Me neither. I love the music and the melody, but the lyrics so far are literally "You're Welcome." Hope it's better!

I don't know where the Borat comparison came from either. In another article they were comparing Maui to Uncle Remus. It seems to me that when they find something to complain about, they just run with it, keep it going on & on.

I hope the grandmother has a song, perhaps a ballad of some kind.

Which King/Chief presents himself better? Merida's father or Moana's father.

Songs in Moana

Post by KennethE »

Arguably the best thing I love about Disney animated films is the music. I fell in love with Frozen partially because that film boasted the finest batch of songs since the days of Tarzan or Mulan in the late 90s.

Now, I have heard a great deal about Moana in recent months, from the beautiful animation, to the voicework of "The Rock," and the fact that there will be music..... but does anybody here know anything about the music other than that one brief piece heard in the trailers?

Maybe what I'm trying to ask here is simply this: does anybody know if Moana will have its equivalent of Let It Go or A Whole New World or Colors of the Wind?

I fear that the soundtrack will be like Lilo & Stitch, a couple good songs, but these will come off as more background music as opposed to a lush Broadway soundtrack that sweeps audiences off their feet.

Thoughts?

I'm also sceptical. I still have hope because for Frozen it was relatively late in the game before they released the musical trailer. But So far Lasseter's instincts regarding music are limited to just checking whoever is the hottest thing on Broadway rather than checking who is the best one for the job.

Also, maybe this can just go in the regular Moana thread? :)

I posted a list of songs that we are EXPECTED to have, according to tweets/those who saw sneak peeks/confirmed etc.
The songs in the movie so far:

Opening (confirmed by Lin on Twitter)

We Know the Way

How Far I’ll Go (Moana)

You’re Welcome (Maui)

Moana’s mother song (According to those who have seen footage)

Kakamora song (According to those who have seen footage)

Tamatoa song

Additional Moana song (The “big” emotional song, according to a Disney animator)

Possibly another Maui song (telling from how often Dwayne sang)

A possible finale song, telling from her costume
Also:
