Not to mention, it seemed like The Lion King set the bar so high for how Disney's animated features, that even if a film did decently like Pocahontas and Mulan, it was still deemed a box-office disappointment. I think, until the Lasseter era, the only post-Lion King animated films that Disney seemed to view as major successes were Tarzan and Lilo & Stitch.

So, I hope even if Big Hero 6 does numbers closer to how Wreck-It Ralph, Disney doesn't treat it like some major box-office flop (which The Princess and the Frog seems already unfairly treated as such, despite more than making double its production budget and doing gangsters on home video).

Though, now that I think about it's surprising that The Lion King didn't yield a whole bunch of movies with only animal casts. You'd think the higher-ups would be demanding that sort of thing. Though I guess part of the reason Tarzan and Brother Bear were greenlit was because they share some similarities to The Lion King in terms of having a similar setting and/or large number of talking animals in the cast.

I think if any movie jinxed anything it was Pocahontas. I don't think it was a box office disappointment, although I do think it made more than it would have because it was riding the wave off Lion King. And I don't think Mulan was deemed a box office disappointment either, as it made the most money domestically since Pocahontas, and actually made more worldwide than Lilo and Stitch. I'd like to think Disney is realistic and does not expect every movie following Frozen to make Frozen money.

Yes. This is from boxofficeguru's update yesterday:

Reaching the $360M domestic mark seems likely and surpassing the $367.9M of Despicable Me 2 is still possible which would make Frozen the toon champ from 2013. The fact that it is not a sequel speaks even more to the incredible performance.

More or less. Even though it isn't a sequel to Tangled, it still jump started off of that movie's success. It suddenly became cool to like Disney again, so now more people are jumping on board.

Just guessing here, but it's getting good word of mouth and it also has good re-watch value, lovable characters ( like Olaf and Elsa) and imo one of the best Disney Villains since ages.


It still has a strong hatedom though, most of Tumblr still wants to jump on the hate bandwagon still, because... I don't know... it's still the latest fad to say that everything is racist and straight/ males are pigs.

I don't think the characters are any more loveable and rewatchable than those in Tangled and Wreck it Ralph though ?

Eh, there'll always be social justice skeptics out there. It just so happens that they're mostly on tumblr, and the easy way to ignore them, besides not going on tumblr, is to not follow those skeptics.

The powerful music may have also helped in the film's success. The music in Tangled, I think, is great, but does not have the same, grand presence Frozen does. In fact, I was talking to a friend about this recently, and Frozen may be one of the few Disney films where nearly all of its major dramatic and character moments come through in epic songs rather than just natural scene progression and development. Think about it... How do we see Anna and Elsa's relationship flounder after Elsa was shut the world? Through song. How do we witness Anna's happiness as well as Elsa's despair as the gates open in time for the coronation? Through song. And what is Frozen's biggest and greatest character development achievement? Through song. It's almost like a Les Miserables type of deal where it is almost 100% songs.

Finally saw it and loved it. Few flaws but I would say best film since renaissance Disney.

It beat the !*%? out of Tangled. Anyone notice Rapunzel and Flynn entering the gates of the castle during 'For the first time in forever?'

I wasn't too fond of most of the songs being crammed in the first half of the film. I also think the villian was quite bland and played good for far too long. Everything else - spot on. Great songs, characters and story.

Pre-ordered it the moment I got out of the theatre. Can't wait to own it. Part of me just wishes it had been traditional 2D animation.

I love how in tumblr everybody was hoping the film would crash and burn, and looking now at the numbers it's turning into the hottest thing of Disney in years.

I agree so much! It hurts more to know that it actually was supposed to be 2D.
