I hope Amazon lowers the price ASAP. $27.99 for what is basically a one-disc release is a bit too much...

Blu-ray.com now has their review up, which includes 20 screenshots! 8)

Check it out: http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Alice-in- ... 09/#Review

Wow, rave reviews all around so far, I am REALLY looking forward to this release! This will be the first time I can go straight home and pop in the Blu-ray! The last new title I got was Fantasia/2000 in November, and I didn't get my Blu-ray player until Christmas so I was only able to check out the DVD copy included (which still showed how great the restoration was).

I can't wait to get this one. It doesn't come out for another month here, but I'm patient.

Excuse me while I wipe my drool off my keyboard. The more screenshots I see of this restoration, the more I crave this release. I'm happy to see the Hatter is now flesh-colored and not pink (as in my avatar). The level of detail brought up by the BD is incredible. You can see every flower vividly in the "World of My Own" screenshot, the brushstrokes in every painting, the pupils in Alice's eyes on a regular basis. This really does look like a brand new film.

I'm digging the main menu (and its somewhat retro font). I wonder if it'll give us a virtual tour of Wonderland the way the Beauty and the Beast menu did for the castle.

It's good to see confirmation on Operation Wonderland and Thru the Mirror being HD. I still find it peculiar that Reflections on Alice and the Pig and Pepper deleted scene aren't in HD when we got those less than a year ago. I also wish Blu-ray.com would've give us an exact running time of the Alice comedy. I want to know if it has the reconstructed ending found on the Walt Disney Treasures, or if it's the one that randomly stops (and is found on the previous Alice releases).

Still, I'm stoked. While the release isn't quite perfect in terms of supplements (something I'm in the process of rectifying), Disney's obviously put a lot of care into this what with carrying over all the video supplements, adding a few new ones like the amazing-looking Through the Keyhole, and the gorgeous new restoration. For that, I'm grateful.

Im really thankful also for Bluray it has given me a new respect and admiration for movies that I either barely watched or a higher regard for those that were my favorite. It actually is like looking at the real works of art/ cels and backgrounds created 60 years ago and at the same time given those artists the real honor they deserve. It is awesome that Disney has not gone the route of how they first released dvd's by dumping substandard definitions and making the public triple dip but probably giving the public the best version they will probably ever need or have ever seen. From the news it looks like the industries are moving away from the best possible quality with the next format being streaming in some form, just look at netflix.

Ridiculous!

Post by Jackoleen »

Dear Disney Enthusiasts,

I personally think that The Disney Company was being 110% ridiculous when they released that silly "Un-Anniversary" edition, followed at an INSANELY fast pace by this new "Anniversary" edition.

That "Un-Anniversary" edition was clearly being utilized as a cash-in on the "Alice in Wonderland" hype that was perfuming the air because of the Johnny Depp movie!

I am becoming more and more disenchanted with these newer Disney DVD rereleases!

Thank you in advance for your replies.

yeah, that's unheard of and it would be completely ridiculous... It would be like re-releasing Mulan during the Bejing Olympics....

oh wait..

I got my advanced copy today and should have that review up for you guys in a few days. Since obviously I want to save my comments for that, I'll just say this: the restoration (both visually and audibly, the latter of which I wasn't expecting) is mind-blowing. Oh, and Through the Keyhole is tied with the Walt's Story Meetings feature from Bambi as the best supplement ever produced for a Disney release. I'll go into more detail in my review, but let's just say I'm one happy Wonderland geek.

I'm guessing the coupon should be coming out this week. They're taking their sweet time.

Hey Kelvin it's really that comparable to Sleeping Beauty? I actually loved the movie after the transfer and the surround sound...

Yeah, it is. Sleeping Beauty wins because the backgrounds are so detailed that they almost look live-action, but in terms of clarity and saturation, Alice is just as strong. I noticed things I never picked up on before, which is astounding considering how many times I've seen this film. Pure eye candy.

As for the audio, Sleeping Beauty wins again because it was in recorded in stereo from the get-go whereas Alice was mono, but the sound mixers were able to separate elements of the track and give them more clarity. Like the video, I noticed things in the audio I never had before.

If I had to rank Disney's classic films on Blu-ray, this is how I'd do it.

VIDEO:
Sleeping Beauty
Alice in Wonderland
Fantasia
Pinocchio
Snow White

AUDIO:
Sleeping Beauty
Fantasia
Alice in Wonderland
Pinocchio
Snow White

Sleeping Beauty had the advantage of widescreen and stereo and therefore gets a major push, but out of the four Academy ratio/mono track films out so far, Alice wins for picture and comes in a decent second for sound (Fantasia's soundtrack still blows me away by how new it sounds). It really felt like I was watching Alice for the first time, and I think you guys know that coming from me, that's saying something. I'll note specific examples of what I discovered for the first time in my review.
