I don't mind converting CGI films and stop motion films into 3D, but this I might... I don't want them to ruin my childhood memories by gimmicky ideas like this.
Very late answer but.

There were only six animated shorts in 3D in 1950's

Disney:
Melody
Working For Penuts (Donald Duck)

Warner Bros:
Lumberjack Rabbit (Bugs Bunny)

Paramount
Boo Moon (Casper)
Ace of Space (Popeye)

Walter Lantz
Hypnotic Hick (Woody Woodpecker)

MGM, Terrytoons and UPA didn't produce any 3-D cartoons of all six main animtion shops operation in the 1950's.
Der Fuehrer's Face is the greatest Donald Duck cartoon ever made.

‘Tangled Ever After’ to Play Before ‘Beauty and the Beast 3D’

The Walt Disney Studios proudly announced today that directors Nathan Greno and Byron Howard, the talented team behind Disney Animation Studio’s global blockbuster Tangled, will premiere a delightful new animated short film spotlighting the royal wedding of Rapunzel (Mandy Moore) and Flynn Rider – a.k.a Eugene – (Zachary Levi) in front of each screening of Beauty and the Beast in 3D, which opens on January 13, 2012

^Oh, my God! I am EXTREMELY eager for this!!!! :D

However, I still can't seem to grasp the idea of Rapunzel as a short-haired brunette!

Well I updated an old comparison to include the Beauty and the Beast 3D trailer.

Image

Notice how all the captures are from digital HD sources and yet the colors are different every time.

Beauty and the Beast 3D has been available on DirecTV for a little while now. If anyone has tried it, let me know how DirecTV's 3D is.

Well, I hope so. I've been wanting to see Beauty and the Beast in theaters forever. I'll be majorly dissapointed if its only playing in 3-D.

It should be in 2D as well. I know The Lion King only had 1 screen at our theater, but the 1st showing of the day was always in 2D. The others were 3D.

Sleeping beauty 3D would be amazing!!!! But it is very unlikely the older films will make it back to the big screen in 3D. If they were going to reappear then Disney would have released Cinderella 3D next year instead of Beauty and the Beast.

Sleeping Beauty in 3D would have been amazing to see! But as you point out, I think Disney will only convert their 90s movies (including The Little Mermaid from 1989) to 3D.

I'm hoping for Aladdin, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules and Tarzan in 3D as well. Especially Aladdin and Hunchback would be great in 3D my opinion. So America should go bananas and flock to see Beauty and the Beast, Finding Nemo, Monsters, Inc. and The Little Mermaid in 3D!^^

If their hand drawn 3D converted movies continue to bring in the money, don't think they won't go to pre CAPS movies eventually. It might not be until they have converted their more successful 90s movies, but they can convert the older stuff, it just takes more time, effort and money.

They converted Nightmare Before Christmas afterall, which even though wasn't traditional, was still completely 2d, and not produced with layers for the most part. Im sure there was some green screen and compositing stuff here and there, but for the most part they were pretty much locked into what the camera gave them, and they still made the effort.

The Little Mermaid is pre CAPS (Mostly...only a small percentage of it toward the end used CAPS) so they are technically already doing this with their final ink & paint feature.

Why hasn't there been any marketing or press for the 3D release of Beauty & the Beast as opposed for The Lion King. We're getting so close to the release date but we still haven't seen any ads or press for the movie (new interviews with the filmmakers, the cast and crew etc). Why is that?
