She didn't drop out; they've removed / reduced her role to focus only on the huntsman. She was always up for a sequel but they've decided to remove Snow altogether. Which quite frankly I think is a piss poor decision; it would be nice to keep a female centred big budget movie going without turfing it over to another buff Avengers / fantasy guy.

I don’t know. If they were going to make a sequel at all, with Charlize Theron (the best part of the first film) already out, the only way I’d even consider seeing it is if Kristen Stewart is also gone. So, for me personally, it’s a good decision. My interest has went from 0% to 3%. Now if only Hollywood in general would do the same thing to her.

Oddly (but thankfully) Linda Woolverton is not attached to the project.

'Perks of Being a Wallflower' author will adapt 'Beauty and the Beast'

Huh? That's weird. So, the remake is going to be drastically different from the 1991 movie, then?

It doesn't have to be. Just because Stephen Chbosky is best known for his contemporary work doesn't mean he won't stay close to the animated movie.

I am curious why they didn't ask Linda Woolverton, though. I'm not a big fan of the woman, but this seems like the perfect project for her, especially since she was also involved with both the animated movie and the Broadway musical, on which this movie is supposedly based. Maybe she was too busy?

I do hope Stephen Chbosky does a good job. I'm not familiar with his other work, but I loved Perks, both the book and the movie.

Quite possibly. She's working on Through the Looking Glass and as well as on a TV series.

The series in question is The Clan of the Cave Bear which will air in 2015 on Lifetime, plus TV writing could potentially be more her speed now; heck Linda should create a cartoon, she's written for many cartoons in the 80's. Plus, the success of Rebecca Sugar's Steven Universe on Cartoon Network should give an indication to other networks that cartoons with female heroines is popular now.

Tendo Nagenda has been promoted to senior VP, production, at the Walt Disney Studios. [...] Among the other projects he is shepherding are A Wrinkle in Time, an adaptation of the Madeleine L’Engle children’s classic being written by Frozen’s Jennifer Lee, as well as Beauty and the Beast, which has director Bill Condon attached.

Disney, said Leib, is working on Pirates of the Caribbean 5, Into the Woods, and a new Beauty and the Beast film with Alan Menken composing new material.

Bill Condon wrote:I’m doing a film version of Beauty and the Beast, and I went to Paris to see a production that Disney’s put up there.

Q: Did the fact that you played Gaston in the musical by Stage Entertainment help you join the cast of the film adaptation of Beauty and the Beast? How did you get on this project?

Alexis Loizon: The film crew of a Disney production came to see the show because they were on location in France and Disney Theatrical which has offices in New York suggested to Bill Condon, the director of the film, to come see the musical in Paris. He was curious. He came and apparently was captivated by the show. He had a great time and I'm very lucky that he enjoyed my performance. He came backstage to congratulate me and tell me in which film he wanted me involved.

For someone doing, as he puts it, “double duty,” the 59-year-old Condon looks remarkably spry. And maybe that should be triple duty, because he is also preparing to shoot a live-action big-screen version of Beauty and the Beast in London.

Condon, best known for his hit feature adaptation of the musical "Dreamgirls," is next set to direct a live-action version of "Beauty and the Beast" for Disney.

Alan Menken wrote:My upcoming projects range from stage musicals (‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame, ‘A Bronx Tale’ and ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’) to film musicals (‘Sausage Party’ and a live-action ‘Beauty and the Beast’) to a new musical series on ABC, ‘Galavant.’
Source: http://www.musicnotes.com/blog/2014/12/ ... interview/
Condon told EW in October that the film will indeed be a musical featuring the 1991 animated film’s original Alan Menken and Howard Ashman songs, as well as new music from composer Menken. “Technology, we hope, has finally caught up to that treatment of the story, so I think we’re all kind of excited to bring that brilliant, amazing score and beautiful story into three dimensions,” Condon said.

And whenever life took Condon to London — where he is presently overseeing pre-production on the live-action version of Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” musical — the director would drop by McKellen’s house on the Thames.

Disney will release Beauty and the Beast in 3D on March 17, 2017. The beloved tale will be retold for the big screen with a modern live-action lens and the help of transformative CG magic. Eight-time Oscar-winner Alan Menken, who won two Academy Awards for the 1991 animated classic, will score the film, which will feature new recordings of the original songs in addition to several new songs written by Menken and Sir Tim Rice. Bill Condon will direct from a script by Stephen Chbosky (The Perks of Being a Wallflower), and the film will be produced by Mandeville Films' David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman. Production begins in May at Shepperton Studios in London.

Well, Disney is in a rush to make this:
And maybe that should be triple duty, because he is also preparing to shoot a live-action big-screen version of Beauty and the Beast in London.

A live action remake of Beauty and the Beast almost seems sacrilegious to me.

I am so not on board.

That's how I feel about all of these live-action reimaginings. Although the Cinderella trailer looks good, it's almost like, What's the point, Disney? Surely there are stories you haven't yet told...

But those are all new versions ... this is an actual remake of the musical as well. Too much.

I'm glad. I would like Emma Watson though. I'm trying to think of someone else who might be good for the role besides her, but not coming up with much... Maybe Natalie Portman? She's older, but that might suit the movie better, possibly? The others I thought of are even older than she is. It's hard to say without knowing who would be playing the beast.

Well Hairspray was a movie, then a musical, and then a movie musical. That change your mind at all?

Oh gosh, really ?! I think they are both as plank - like as each other. I still think someone like Gemma Arterton would be superb in the role.

Hairspray was a bad cult movie. Not a best picture nominee.

Literally no one is going to favorably compare this to arguably Disney's most beloved/acclaimed film of all time.
