Re: Moana
I like that they hired a Polynesian choir, and the bits of score in the video sound good. And speaking of music, it looks like Moana is going to have a deluxe edition soundtrack like Frozen:

Re: Moana
I'll probably wait until after seeing the film before I buy the soundtrack. I took a risk and bought the Frozen soundtrack prior to seeing anything because of the Lopezes/Menzel, and thankfully that turned out alright. I haven't seen Hamilton, but I've seen a couple performances from it on several awards show and I couldn't really get into the music. Not saying it's not a masterpiece--before people bombard me--but not for me so it's probably best to wait and see with this.
I just Wikipedia'd to check when the release date is. I'm glad this'll be after the US election. It'll be a nice cooldown after all that insanity.

Re: Moana
I remember the first soundtrack that I actually bought prior to seeing it's movie was Brother Bear. And I never thought of it as a bad thing. For some reason I found it intriguing to listen to a score prior to seeing the movie. And I've done that after since.
And why did the recent Making off-video show the trailers prior to the movie? It barely showed the soundtrack.
Btw, have you seen these videos, guys? Nothing really informative, but at least the first video shows Pua.

Re: Moana
There's going to be a meta princess joke in the movie.
Unsurprisingly, Disney's promoting Moana as "not like other princesses". Ever since Lasseter took over every princess is described in opposition to the previous ones: Tiana, Rapunzel, Merida, Anna, Elsa, Elena, Moana... We're getting to a point where we'll have more 'un-princessy' princesses yet Disney still feels the need to apologize for its princess legacy while at the same time exploiting it to no end.
I'd totally describe Ariel and Tiana as badasses. You don't need to physically hurt people to be a 'strong' female character.

Ok, so this settles the Disney Princess dilemma. But, yeah. Cute joke, but I just cringed really hard.Sotiris wrote:There's going to be a meta princess joke in the movie.![]()

After creating three iconic Disney Princesses, I refuse to think they mean that. They were definitely told by executives to say that.

Re: Moana
You guys remember during the Renaissance they did that as well, so blaming this as apart of it being Lasseter's fault is really kind of misblaming him for a practice that is older than people think.Sotiris wrote:There's going to be a meta princess joke in the movie.![]()

Also I believe the reason why they are even more emphasizing the point is the fact that this time there is going to be no love interest at all. Except for Merida which did have a marriage subplot, this is going to be absolutely devoid of anything having to do with falling in love.
And the reason why they keep doing it is because the general populace will never forgive them for always giving their heroines a love interest, and with Moana they are forgoing the romantic subplot that is often seen in Disney movies. I know in Frozen a lot of people complained that there was still a romance subplot, and thought it should focus more on Anna and Elsa.
Re: Moana
So Disney is promoting Moana as a "Badass women of Color with no Love interest"? She sounds like a self-loathing jerk to me. To bad they couldn't promote her as having a good heart & character. In actuality she's coming of as a colored Merida wanna-be

Re: Moana
Tiana would totally cut a bitch. As for Ariel, I always think of the OUAT episode where she stabs Regina with a fork.
I know it's not the original film, but still, it felt completely in-character with movie Ariel, who searched for treasure in dangerous waters, wasn't afraid to enter the Sea Witch's lair when Sebastian was practically pissing himself in fright, and attacked Ursula without any reservations at the end.
The way they promote Lasseter's films with stock phrases/artificial praise is almost as repetitive as the films themselves often are. And these princess jokes just make me think all the crossover PIXAR employees are pinching their nose while they're working at Disney.

Pixar has some nerve, considering they are mimicking 2000s DreamWorks Animation with they're unnecessary cash-grab sequelsDisney's Divinity wrote:Tiana would totally cut a bitch. Re: Moana
Oh for goodness sake, when will Disney learn not to trash the old when they have something new ? Newer isn't always better ... its just newer ! I really don't like this mentality, as its popping up more and more with every new Disney release. What happened to embracing the rich history of all the varied characters that they've created ?

Re: Moana
It seems like just a joke to me.
I mean, it seems like a mediocre one at best, but I don't feel like it indicates any real malicious intent toward the legacy of the studio. It's highlighting a trope that Moana clearly still falls into to some extent, even if the character isn't technically royalty. I can definitely see how marketing as each film as the anti-"Disney princess" is annoying and can come off as if they're disrespecting their past films, but I can't ultimately fault them much on that front, when so many people seemingly love to tear them apart for their heroines being un-feminist, weak, and/or defined by their love interests.
The "badass" comment is kinda weird, since I agree with the notion that Ariel and Tiana are both strong-willed and assertive characters that know what they want and when to take action. From what we've seen, Moana does seem like she may have some warrior in her, so I suppose that may be what they're pointing to, which I guess would make sense since the term is often used in the context of being a slick action hero/heroine. I guess we'll see.

Re: Moana
So tiresome. And they risk shooting themselves in the foot by saying this. Because different from 'those other princesses' in this case means different from their two Frozen cash cows. They spent that whole movie showing us how progressive they are and now with Moana they're essentially saying that was nothing.
Whatever Disney. Just give us good music already. Or at least a fairytale musical with more than 1 decent song.

At The El Capitan there's going to be a marathon of Musker & Clemets films with introduction by the directors and special guests. It sound pretty cool for anyone who can make it.

Ooh, that's neat. I might try to make it to one of the Aladdin showings.Sotiris wrote:At The El Capitan there's going to be a marathon of Musker & Clemets films with introduction by the directors and special guests. It sound pretty cool for anyone who can make it.

EDIT: Oh, I just noticed that the intros are only at one of the showings for each film, and I can't make the Oct 15 one... So scratch that....
Re: Moana
Look at Beauty & the Beast on the right: So timeless after 25 years with presentable, likeable characters. Now look at Moana & Maui on the left, silly, immature & very modern. Looks very forgettable after a few years.
