I think it's silly that this is being released as a Platinum when there's already a perfectly good 2 disc edition out there. It takes up the slot of something that hasnt had a proper release yet, such as Pinocchio.

Although the argument that releasing SB to a Platinum Edition is a bad idea can be made for many reasons, "there's already a perfectly good 2 disc edition out there" isn't really one of them since that 2-Disc set isn't exactly "out there" anymore, unless you want to pay $40+ for a new one, and $25+ for a used one on eBay or Amazon Marketplace.

Some people missed out on the last edition. And I'm one of those who isn't going to pay 50 or 60 bucks for one on the internet. But I do want Pinocchio as a PE. I somehow completely missed the posts on the trailer from last month!
The trailer mentioned that it's the "first time on Platinum Edition DVD"- I guess they're assuming that people know that a Platinum Edition DVD is a 2-disc DVD? Or did they leave out their normal announcement of it being a 2-disc DVD since "Sleeping Beauty" already has a 2-disc DVD?
The site mentions that the bonus features are:
Rescue Aurora Set-Top Adventure Game
All-New Music Video Once Upon (Another) Dream By Hit Pop Group no secrets
Exclusive Disney Art Project
Sing-Along Song With Sleeping Beauty
Did they just not update that part of the website, or are these features also going to be ported over to the PE DVD? People barely knew who No Secrets was back in 2003- they're definitely not a "hit pop group"! Will there be no new bonus features?!?
I think what Ariel'sprince meant was that the trailer and bonus features are identical to the 2003 release.

I agree. I'm not against releasing a film from the Disney Vault, but SB will have been in the Vault for only 5 years, and it has previously had a 2-disc DVD, whereas "Pinocchio" has only had a crappish release in the US, and it's been in the vault since early 2002- if "Pinocchio" comes out in March 2009, then it would've been in the Vault for over 7 years...*sigh*xxhplinkxx wrote:I think it's silly that this is being released as a Platinum when there's already a perfectly good 2 disc edition out there. I think that with the higher space capacity that offers the blu ray technology (25 GB per disc) you don't necessarily need a second BR disc to put the same hours of bonus features that on a regular 2-disc DVD set. What I mean is that, on Blu Ray, the movie and all the bonus features (same as DVD) would fit onto one BR disc, mainly because at the moment, the bonus features are rarely proposed in HD but only in SD, so they would all fit in there.singerguy04 wrote:I'm begining to ger worried over the fact that since it's going to be on Blu-Ray whether or not it'll actually have 2-discs. I mean the trailer doesn't say 2-discs at all. Is there anything anywhere that says it will be?

I think Disney made a good choice making Sleeping Beauty their first classic BD release... SB is not as widely known and not as populair as some of the other classics and if you think back on what DVD did for Snow White I think this release is gonna make SB very populair and widely known...
Gosh I really can't wait to see this in High Def... It's gonna look so amazing!!

I did a search but came up with nothing, so my question:
The 2003 SE, from what I recall, was not the correct aspect ratio. Well it was presented as such but I clearly remember images popping up online that compared it to a laserdisc transfer (?) that showed the dvd transfer was cutting off some animation on the bottom and top of the frame.
first question, I'm not crazy right? this was the case?
second, will the Blu-Ray disc fix this problem? will we get to see everything of Sleeping Beauty and not a "cropped" original aspect ratio?
if this question has already been answered somewhere or if I'm wrong please let me know

You're not crazy. The 2003 DVD was derived from a 35mm print and not the original Technirama negatives, resulting in a 2.35:1 AR (Technirama is 70mm with an AR of about 2.25:1). So there is a certain percentage of image lost on all sides as the 35mm is "zoomed in" from the 70mm negatives.
Second Answer:
I have no idea. Hopefully, the restoration was done from the Technirama negatives, so we'll get the theatrical AR.
I did a few searches of deathie's posts which is where I found the info about SB. He also provided a still in a thread comparing the 1995 VHS P&S transfer to the 2003 VHS P&S transfer (showing material on the top that was missing), as well as the 2003 DVD transfer:PatrickvD wrote:if this question has already been answered somewhere or if I'm wrong please let me know

Yellow: VHS - P&S (I'm assuming it's a pre-2003 VHS release)
Red: DVD - P&S
Green: DVD - OAR

You're right about the aspect ratio, but the Technirama negative is actually 35 mm, not 70mm. The trick is that by running the film horizontally through the camera, each frame can be twice as large as that of a regular 35mm negative, and almost as large as a 65mm negative. (The negative format for 70mm film is actually 65mm since there are no soundtracks on the negative!)Escapay wrote:The 2003 DVD was derived from a 35mm print and not the original Technirama negatives, resulting in a 2.35:1 AR (Technirama is 70mm with an AR of about 2.25:1). Originally, it was the intention to exhibit Technirama on special projectors where the film would run horizontally. But only a very small number of such projectors were made.
Instead, the Technirama negative was found to be very well suited for optical printing to regular 35mm (scope) or 70mm film for exhibition. In each case, you would of course lose a little bit of the picture, either at the top and bottom or at the sides, since neither 35mm scope nor 70mm film has exactly the same aspect ratio as Technirama.
I think Sleeping Beauty was chosen as the first Blu-ray "traditional" classic release simply because it IS widescreen. It stops all those questions about side-bars on people who expect their brand new 16:9 screens to be filled (although it will still have top and bottom bars) and it also stops people complaining about other Disney classics being cropped from their open matte presentations people are used to.
It would make far more sense for Disney to release a Blu-ray Snow White or Pinocchio for example.
However, never look a gift horse in the mouth. But I think another "one that started it all" promotion of Snow White on Blu-ray may have served Disney better. It's clearly the better film as well (ooh, controversy!)

Thank you Loomis, for posting the wonderful news. I am now even more excited than ever before for this release. The future of our favorite films on home video is looking better and better. I am amazed with how much a studio can do with Blu-Ray. It sounds like the audience will be totally immersed in Aurora’s Kingdom with the menus and bonus features. The new Maleficent game sounds especially promising. Hopefully it will feature some new animation. I now realize why they used the new voices in the trailer--it looks like the characters will be speaking to us and interacting with us throughout our journey on the Blu-Ray disc. I am even more excited for Sleeping Beauty than ever before. This is truly going to be a release like no other. Thank you once again Loomis for posting the fantastic news.

Well two weeks ago I had a Dream about Sleeping Beauty. In the dream I found a book relating to the upcoming DVD. When I woke up I decided to do a quick search, and behold I came across this book which features the art from the upcoming cover art of Sleeping Beauty PE. I am so sorry I forgot to post this, I have been very busy.

The characters are actually on model. Aurora is wearing BLUE!!! and has curls. This is going to look wonderful. The purple adds a nice touch. I assume that the actual cover will be an expanded version of this book cover, and feature Maleficent.

According to a Disney french forum, people will have the chance to choose the cover of the PE. These are the candidates. My favorite is the third one, it really suits the movie.

The Art of Sleeping Beauty is a blog dedicated to one of the most enchanting Disney Classics.
