Figured I'd give this a "bumo" since I've been taking a break from my Disney DVD watching. Plus, I don't think I've ever really responded to this thread, so yay, needless bump and needless upping of my post count!

From Star Trek III: The Search for Spock:
Captain's Log (26:12) - this, along with the Captain's Log featurette on Wrath of Khan stand out as two very DRY and POORLY MADE documentaries ever. While what the people are saying in this doc is great, it looks entirely amateurish. It's great that the docs are 16x9 enhanced, but the video quality is...blegh. Shots are either shaky, zoomed in too much on the actor, or not zoomed enough. Add to the fact that they haven't even white-balanced the shots, worked on the lighting, or in some cases, shot someone against a backlight, thus, giving that odd silhouette affect to the speaker.
Space Docks and Birds of Prey (27:49) - I actually fell asleep about halfway through this, then woke up for about 5 minutes, fell asleep again, then woke up a couple minutes before it was over. I'll try watching it again, but the speakers are again very dry and sound really boring half the time.
Theatrical Trailer - yay, the trailer! I love me my trailers...
From Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home:
Future’s Past: A Look Back (27:26) - ST4 is my favorite of the Star Trek films, and I loved this doc about it as well. It's much more relaxed and interesting than the Captain's Log docs, and thankfully, look a lot better too. They actually look professional! Anyways, this doc is one of my favorites to rewatch and while it's shorter compared to other DVD docs, it's because there are like, a dozen other featurettes that altogether give a very good behind-the-scenes look at the film.
On Location (7:20) - enjoyable, but a bit too short for me. Still, it's from ST4, so it's a rewatchable piece.
Dailies Deconstruction (4:08 ) - I remember when I first watched this, back in...2004 when I first got the DVDs. It bored the hell out of me then, but now, it's actually quite interesting to see, especially when you compare the various takes of just the one line "Well, a double dumb*** on you!".
Theatrical Trailer - of course...
From Star Trek V: The Final Frontier:
The Journey (28:55) - I have to admit, ST5 is somewhat of a guilty pleasure for me. I thoroughly enjoyed the documentary, and immediately watched the film afterwards. So there.
Theatrical Trailer - woohoo!
TV Spots - yay!
From Kingdom of Heaven:
The Path to Redemption: Part II - Faith And Courage (19:56) - I randomly decided to watch this 20-minute part of the 140-minute doc simply to see the footage from Bloom's screen test again, and compare it to the look of the actual film.

Ha - those are on my VHS, they play one right after the other without interrupting the movie at all ... Well there are black cards with joke-lines inbetween, but it's intercut with quirky music and it feels like the movie was always supposed to be that way. I like it that way. And they actually tell you... the 3rd ending is the true ending (the "I'm gonna go home and sleep with my wife" one).Escapay wrote:Clue

Yeah, I like it that way too (with the Scarlett ending as my favorite thanks to the 1+2+1+1 gag). But every so often, when I watch the DVD I'll pick the theatrical viewing option and get a random ending.Lazario wrote:Ha - those are on my VHS, they play one right after the other without interrupting the movie at all ... I haven't seen Three Little Pigs in quite a few years (the original that is, though I've watched the WW2 version several times), but in comparing the animation between 3LP and Oz, there's more fluidity in 3LP and the characters and movements are better. The Oz cartoon is a gem to watch, but I feel is inferior to 3LP in terms of animation. Not much really goes on in the short, Dorothy ends up in Oz, meets the Scarecrow and Tin Man, then they go to the Emerald City where the Wizard entertains them with tricks. No Cowardly Lion, and no Wicked Witch, unfortunately. Still, it's a very interesting short, and I'm glad WB put it in the boxset. The video quality isn't the best (which they acknowledge in a few text screens before the short), but is still watchable. There's a lot of dirty and grain, as well as obvious shaking and the colors are very faded and washed out. At a couple points, the film actually moves to the left or right a bit, causing the picture to go off-centre for a second or two.
I got the 3-disc CE at Target a couple weeks after it came out, back in 2005. I think it only cost me $34.99 then, and it's currently $36.99 at Amazon. The SRP is $49.99, so $37 is quite a good deal.
And the Oz cartoon is by Ted Eshbaugh, not Max Fleischer.

How does that work? Is that in the "Special Features" section, or is it a Menu Screen that comes up after you press Play? Or a Menu Option right next to Play / Set-Up Options? And if there is a Play-what type screen, does it list the endings and do you choose that way, or do you watch the 2 other endings separately all by themselves, or do you usually watch all 3 at the same time if you don't select "Theatrical" version play?Escapay wrote:Yeah, I like it that way too (with the Scarlett ending as my favorite thanks to the 1+2+1+1 gag). Wow, sounds like a good deal, wonder if it's still in print. Maybe I could request it for my 19th b-day.
Guess I should erase my Wizard of OZ dvd and replace it with Wizard Of OZ collector's Edition. Bummer bout the short deleting Lion and Dixie (Wicked Witch) sounds interesting though.

On the DVD, when you press Play from the Main Menu, it'll go to this screen:Lazario wrote:How does that work? To see the endings by themselves, select the Random Ending option and watch the film through its entirety. At about 1:18:52 or so, it'll branch to one of the 3 endings. Anyway, once you get through the entire movie, you'll be back at the main menu. Go to the Theatrical Trailer option and push down on the remote. It'll highlight the magnifying glass seen here:

Selecting that will take you to a menu that lets you choose to watch Ending A, Ending B, or Ending C:

It's still in print, though will likely be easier to find in video stores rather than retail places like Wal-Mart or Target (as they're apt to just carry the two-disc version).Mason_Ireton wrote:Wow, sounds like a good deal, wonder if it's still in print. Maybe I could request it for my 19th b-day.
If I were you, I'd keep the single-disc version, as a few extras from it aren't carried over to the new versions:Mason_Ireton wrote:Guess I should erase my Wizard of OZ dvd and replace it with Wizard Of OZ collector's Edition. Bummer bout the short deleting Lion and Dixie (Wicked Witch) sounds interesting though.
-The 1979 PBS interviews with Margaret Hamilton, Ray Bolger, and Jack Haley (about 12 minutes)
-"The Jitterbug" Sequence (with Demo Track)- for the single-disc DVD, they used the demo track over the photos/home movies instead of the finished track (as it appeared in the 1989 50th Anniversary VHS). While the demo is available in the Audio Vault, it's still interesting to see it attached to the photo montage/home movies.
-Text Screens with Cast Biographies and Production Notes
It should be noted, too, that the Special Effects Sequences on the single disc version are presented on their own (rather than one long featurette) and without the Angela Lansbury introductions and narrations. Instead there's several seconds of informative text screens, which I prefer over Ms. Lansbury (nothing against her, I just liked the text screens).
Also, while the CE contains the complete "Romance of Celluloid" short, the single-disc provides only the Wizard of Oz related portion, and even offers it at a slowed-down speed to better view the footage (since the camera pans rather quickly at one point).
Finally, while the Ultra-Resolution restoration is absolutely STUNNING, the single-disc's transfer has a more muted tone to its colors, and it's not as saturated as the CE.
I sold my single-disc a few weeks before getting the CE, though I'd like to pick it up again one of these days, if only for further comparison purposes regarding the transfer, as well as viewing the special effects sequences without Ms. Lansbury's narration.

Re: Bonus Features
can you post screencaps from the OZ short/Silent Film if possible and the Scarecrow scene for Ultra-restoration too.
