Well if 1.78:1 is the preferred AR that the producers/directors want, then THAT is the OAR, despite the film being drawn in a 1.66:1 AR.
If we were to assume that every shooting aspect ratio were the OAR, then Super35 films would have to be given a 1.33:1 AR, which definitely isn't the OAR of those films...

It's seriously not that big of a deal, since the difference between 1.66:1 and 1.78:1 is barely noticable anyway. It's sure better than the VHS, which is what most people have, so be happy.
And I still believe that there is no possible way that this set cannot have a commentary. John Musker & Ron Clements have put too much effort into Aladdin's and Treasure Planet's DVDs to just let this movie's DVD release slip by. Even with the obvious lack of effort Disney's been putting into their DVDs lately, I still really think they're going to make this release great.

I, too, am dissapointed by the AR. But, i guess i'll be happy to see the widescreen version of the film..and not fullscreen.
I am also STRONGLY against fastplay. I think it is the most pointless feature on DVD's, considering that all you have to do is press 2 or 3 buttons, and you can watch the movie...i mean, how SIMPLE is that?! not to mention, with fastplay, it shows the fullscreen version...which i dont think i'll ever understand why Disney uses that version for the fastplay...oh well.
BUT, overall, I can't wait until this finally comes to dvd! I no longer have this VHS, or the OOP dvd (i opted to wait for this PE), and so i'm very excited about October 3rd!!

They only did that once, which was for Lady & the Tramp, and I have a feeling that Disney only did that because the aspect ratio for L&tT is so much wider than most other Disney animated features, and little kids usually like fullscreen better. The Little Mermaid won't even have a fullscreen option, so there's nothing to worry about.brotherbear wrote:not to mention, with fastplay, it shows the fullscreen version...which i dont think i'll ever understand why Disney uses that version for the fastplay...oh well.
Honestly, Fastplay doesn't do anything to improve the DVD, but it doesn't do anything to harm it either. I don't really understand what it is about it that makes you all so mad.

They did NOT mess up the AR!!!BATBFan1 wrote:Well, they did mess up the AR of Beauty and the Beast, so why not stop there and have more fun with The Little Mermaid?![]()
But like Pasta67 said, it's not as bad as making the film 1.85:1 when it was suppose to be 1.66:1!![]()
It was shown in theatres as 1.85:1, it's shown on DVD as 1.85:1, both times, that's what the creators wanted!!!!
The films aren't "supposed to be" 1.66:1, that's merely the size of the animated cell, and in theaters, they get matted to its INTENDED AND PROPER ASPECT RATIO OF 1.85:1!!!!
Geez, people say they want widescreen, when it's given, they complain it's not the widescreen they want...
If you really want the 1.66:1 AR, hunt down the laserdisc!

so no commentary? I swear they've already had some kind of bonus feature about the hans christen andersen on something already....hopefully the "much more" will at least include tv spots and trailers, art galleries, the original making of special and the supposed "theatrical version" that is different that is different than all the video versions. btw, does anyone know if there actually were significant differences in the theatrical and video? I was really little when I saw it in theaters....

I don't recall reading *anywhere* that there's a difference between the theatrical release and the VHS release.totallyminnie86 wrote:the supposed "theatrical version" that is different that is different than all the video versions. btw, does anyone know if there actually were significant differences in the theatrical and video?
Perhaps the removal of "Silver Screen Partners IV" from the credits, but that's about it, I guess...

Well, I don't complain mainly because the R2 issue of Disney's DVDs never seems to have one...Escapay wrote:No one's griped about FastPlay yet, but then again, the complaints would fall on deaf ears, as Disney, lazy people, and parents everywhere love it...

I watched 'Kronk's New Groove' the other day and that was the first time I'd encountered FastPlay on R2 DVD. Can't say it particularly bothers me, though there is absolutely no point to it at all.
I'd like a commentary though; I rarely listen to them but the Disney ones are usually very interesting, particularly The Lion King one.

Yea, I was almost sure that there weren't any differences either, I guess to be more specific I had once heard there were different versions, one with ariel signing the scroll with blood and the standard version where she writes it with a pen....I guess whoever wrote that was mistaken.BATBFan1 wrote:Escapay wrote: I don't recall reading *anywhere* that there's a difference between the theatrical release and the VHS release.

As I was mentioned on the thread on the Walt Disney Pictures Logo, is "The Little Mermaid" would still have the original blue WDP logo or maybe the new logo like they did the same with the upcoming "Pirate of the Caribbean 2" as Steve Hulett mentioned on the Animation Guild Blog? I have the original VHS copy that featured the original logo.

I would say that all of the older movies, well, older than PotC2, will have the logo from the 80s till now. And then anything after PotC2, will have the new logo that Steve Hulett made. This is just my idea, but it sounds pretty good.musicradio77 wrote:As I was mentioned on the thread on the Walt Disney Pictures Logo, is "The Little Mermaid" would still have the original blue WDP logo or maybe the new logo like they did the same with the upcoming "Pirate of the Caribbean 2" as Steve Hulett mentioned on the Animation Guild Blog?
