Classic Cartoon Favorites Wave 3 - Holiday DVD Press Release

Fidget>Disney gave a hypocritical answer as to why they wouldn't release it to DVD a few years ago. Pretty much, the movie was too relgious and Disney didn't want to focus on one religion. But they said this even though they still make Hunchback. I wrote Disney 2 letters asking for the release in the USA of Small One to DVD. It has been on DVD for a few years in the UK, in the DVD Countdown to Christmas. And I JUST bought that too, lol. Guess I didn't need to. Perhaps Disney will take a small time out to restore it a bit. Doubt it. I'll just be happy to have it on DVD. And make some new screenshots

It's one of my favorites, but it seems that it's out every other Christmas in one form or another!?

I have never heard of "Small One," but it seems pretty good from the few pictures I saw.

If this is the final list of shorts, I am also a little surprised that not more of the Silly Symphony Christmas shorts were included. I am not sure of the official names, but I know there is one retelling the "Night Before Christmas" and another one with Toys coming to life after their store has closed. Many of these I remember from the Disney Christmas Sing-A-Longs. I guess I will just have to wait for the second Silly Symphony Treasure to come out...

Quite right but there is a very plausible reason. You mentioned the treasures and this is the most likely spot to find the Silly symphony shorts due to 1930's era stereotyping. Quite a few blackface gags and steppin' fetchet caricatures, particularly in Broken Toys, a charming cartoon! I am interested before I buy this disc whether they edit shorts like toy tinkers and Mickeys good deed as they have done in the past. If not I will pick it up. Also, I know Mickeys good deed is on the treasures but I do not like to overplay those.

Now not to dampen everyone's high hopes but what is the chance that Disney might decide not to release The Small One on the Christmas Wave 3 set just like they did with Soccermania on the Extreme Sports Fun Wave 2 DVD. I would like to see the Small One again but I have a bad feeling that Disney might make a quick decision and decide not to release it just yet. Also if the Small One does come out, will there be chance that Don Bluth will show up on the disc and do something like an audio commentary or something?

Yikes, I hadn't even thought of that possibility. I was extremely disappointed about not getting Soccermania. . . I hope the same thing doesn't happen.

It would be so nice to have Don Bluth do some kind of commentary, but given his history at the studio, I wouldn't even expect it. I wonder how the studio feels about him, even after all this time.

I've had the pleasure of personally talking to Mr. Bluth and Gary Goldman as well at Dragon Con a few years ago. We touched lightly on Small One and he said it was a time of turmoil when making Small One. Though he doesn't seem to hold hard feelings for Disney now. I believe he would be open for commentary, but I'm not sure if Disney would be.

And frankly, I don't think Disney would do commentary for it anyways. I think Disney has little faith in the short.

Yeah, that was definitely a time of turmoil. . . it wasn't too much later that he walked out (and I don't blame him).

And yeah, I agree that it doesn't seem like something that Disney would be willing to have a commentary done for, or any other kind of bonus feature, for that matter.

I think his exact words were "I was disenchanted", about Disney. He told me it really started when he was working on Rescurers and they told him, "Don't bother coloring in the eyes on the mice" or something to that effect. All to save money. The quality was in the tubes. It was about quantity and money. You look at Bluth's work after he left Disney is you can see that time and effort was put into not just the animation, but the story. Land Before Time, Secret of NIMH, and American Tail had some of the most gorgeous backgrounds, animation, score, and stories. Much of which seems to inspire (if not cause people to copy Bluth) today, including by Disney (Dinosaur and Land Before Time for instance). Bluth is too underrated, IMO. When I met him and Goldman, for me, it was as near to meeting Walt himself as I will ever come. Quality in story and animation has not be lost on him. He doesn't do it for money. More of his features have caused him to lose money. Not to mention lose all rights. Look what Universal did to his masterpiece Land Before Time. But I should stop the worshipping while I am ahead.

The difference is "Soccermania" was never announced, we just assumed it would be included as it was for R2. Maybe for Disney Rarities.

As for cover art, "still" nothing yet. It's only been a couple of weeks since we even knew about these existing, so it could well be a while.

Yeah, I have read about the "Don't bother coloring in the eyes on the mice" thing. And the fact that he and several artists left lowered the morale of the remaining artists. It also caught a lot of publicity was probably a the best thing that could have happened to all parties involved.

I have a lot of respect for a person like him that goes through such lengths to stand up for what he believes in.

I sure wish Small One and Christmas Carol were presented in Widescreen
on this disc. I have the Mickey treasure with it in 16x9 Widescreen on Christmas Carol, I just was hoping for the same on Small One.
Oh well...at least it's finally coming out on DVD.
Maybe it will be in it's correct aspect ratio in some kind of a treasures set.

Exactly! That is what I had hoped this collection would have been. Those classics were on a VHS titled "A Walt Disney Christmas":

Which not only includes the ones you mention (Santa's Workshop and the Night Before Christmas - which both play as one full story), but it also has the hilarious Donald's Snow Fight, where he has a great snowball battle with his three nephews. A total classic! The stereotypes you mentioned on the Santa shorts were already taken out when it was re-released:

So I have no idea why they're not releasing those onto a Xmas compilation (and a second Silly Symphony WDT has nothing to do with it, cuz they have no problem releasing Pluto's Christmas Tree and Mickey's Christmas Carol THREE times now!).

Looks like I'm going to have to burn my VHS copy onto DVD... *sigh*....

Both are great covers but I prefer the Treasure sets.
