What's so bad about Entertainment In Video (apart from the dreary name and logo, of course)?

I can't wait for this DVD, only my mom forbids me to get it so that she can buy it for my birthday (which is on the 31st).

And as much as I hate the tacky rose and mask in the corner, I'm so glad they finally changed the Phantom-in the poster, his mask is on the wrong side, and it REALLY bugs me.

I find your tone very irritating. You tend to state your opinion as if it is the end-all-be-all judgement, as if your viewpoint is the most important one. I make it a point to be open to other people's opinions, but in your case, I can't stand to be, because your behavior comes across as being so arrogant.
First of all, it seems like both you and pinkrenata are finding fault in how I base my judgements and not on what I say. Neither of you quoted my basis for saying why I disliked it, but were quick to pick up on my overall negative judgement. The reason why I said that was because pinkrenata made it seem like I arbitrarily dissed the movie just to be "critical," even insulting my intelligence by saying I though it originated in America. If I come off as forceful in my opinions, it's because they're in the minority. If I was forcefully being positive about the movie, you guys would have nothing to say. I guess all my future posts should be something like, "I like the movie. It was very beautiful. The acting was good. The director is good. I like Emmy Rossum," then interject a dozen overzealous adjectives to top the whole thing off.

I answered this thread topic by saying if I would by the DVD or not, and I said no, not because of the movie, but the lack of a second disk. If we want to get technical, you guys are basically telling me how to spend my money.

I honestly don't understand what you said there. Why do you think we're finding fault with "how you base your judgement" when you say niether us of us quoted your "basis for saying why you dislike it"?
Prince Eric wrote:The reason why I said that was because pinkrenata made it seem like I arbitrarily dissed the movie just to be "critical," even insulting my intelligence by saying I though it originated in America.
Speaking for myself, you insult my intelligence when you infer that the only reason I'm finding fault with you is because I disagree with your opinion - when in fact, I'm finding fault with your demeanor and nothing else.
Prince Eric wrote:If I come off as forceful in my opinions, it's because they're in the minority.
Even if you feel thats the case, that's no reason to act the way you.
Prince Eric wrote:If I was forcefully being positive about the movie, you guys would have nothing to say.
Yes, I would. It's not your opinion that bothers me (as I said, I'm open to other peoples opinions) - its the way you're delivering it. Even if our opinions were similar, I would be embarrassed to agree with someone who proclaims their judgements the way you have been doing. You may not be doing it on purpose, but it certainly comes across that you do.

Just another example of how you act like other people's opinions are stupid. For someone who seems to be trying to sound intelligent, you're doing a poor job when you make comments like that.
Prince Eric wrote:If we want to get technical, you guys are basically telling me how to spend my money.
That's a pretty ridiculous statement. I'm not at all doing that.

I'm not interested in continuing what's turning out to be a "debate", when its obvious there won't be much of a resolve. I just hope you realize you're the only person on these forums whom I have a hard time listening to express their opinions. You're a smart guy, and I think there's a possibility for nice conversations between us, but your current behavior really, really turns me off. Hope it will change in the future.

I found this on HTF: Make of it what you will.

I got an e-mail from WHV which said that there is the single disc version ($27.95) as well as a 2 disc version ($29.95)coming on the same date. There's not much listed for special features yet, but it does say that the

"2-disc special edition features:
• 2 documentaries about the story's & the musical's legacy
• 3 more making-of featurettes
• DVD_ROM weblink to Phantom's online world "

Right, I hope you realize that you and pinkrenata are the ONLY one who have a problem to my The Phantom of the Opera aversion. There's other people on this forum who absoultely ADORE it even, and have not found anything offensive about my comments. I have even had private conversations with some who have totally been willing to listen to my observations and who have agreed to disagree. Everyone has their guilty pleasures, or favorites based on sentimentalism and so do I, and I feel no reason to defend them, other than the fact that I like them and that's just me.

Again, you site my "demeanor", which non one else has had a probelm with and which I honestly cannot see. I'll try and explain it once more: you guys were keen on quoting particulars of my posts that had nothing to do with my reason for negatively reviewing the film.

I really take offense that people think I'm trying to sound intelligent, when this is how I speak/reason all the time. What you see is what you get, and I make no apologies. I'm glad some people appreciate that type of personality, and I'm willing to accept that some people don't, for whatever reasons. I believe in democracy and the principals/processes of it, which were obviously attacked by what you're saying.

I think you're reading into things way too much.

I was not attacking people who had that opinion, I was showing that maybe if everything I said was positive, then it would be more accepted. It's not an example of me making others feel stupid, but your whole post is an example of your own paranoia.

Just to show that I'm not didactic/judgemental, I have never outright criticized anyone's opinions in my "Screening Log" forum. Everyone seemed to have it in for Meet the Fockers, while I clearly enjoyed it. I didn't make anyone feel bad because they didn't like it, and as a matter of fact, besides my own mini-review, I didn't even post anything for a rebuttal.

This is just getting silly. Both of you guys are right. PrinceEric- I absolutley ADORE 'Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera', yet I think your comments are fine- they are your opinion. However, I do understand Jack's point of view. Sometimes your opinion just comes of a little too strong.... :D

Jack wrote:I'm very excited for the release, but I was SURE it would get 2 discs. Also, the cover isn't too great. I liked the original poster better, with the Phantom being in the shadows, and the rose/mask image at the bottom looks soooo tacked on. Maybe its just cause I'm used to looking at the poster.
Ok, resident Phantom religious nutcase side of me has to comment here.

1) The phans have been following this release very closely and we know of several extras that are being prepped for release, including a big doccumentary on the history of all things Phantom dating back to the original novel, which was first published in French in 1910. Wheather this will be on the May 3 release remains to be seen, but I'd expect WB to pull a double dip on this, since they know that there are billions of Phantom geeks in the world, most of whom will gladly buy it twice. Also, remember that it has been confirmed as one of the 89 titles with which the HD-DVD format is being launched sometime this fall.

2) Many phans, myself included, were outright offended by the original poster because the mask is actulally on the wrong side of his face in that design. I am glad it was fixed.

3) The mask and rose on the bottom is a nice salute to the now-iconic poster and logo imagery for the stage production. I'm sure that's why it was put on there.

See the post above yours - they just announced the 2-Disc set for May 3, and it includes documentaries on the story (or, I'm assuming that means the book) and musical.

Well, I'm not so sure. The price difference seems pointless. $2 for an extra disc. Why bother with a single disc?

At some point I read that they were going to release a director's cut of the movie....has anyone heard anything about that rumor?

Good question. I think Warners is kind of just following the trend of other studios right now, by releasing a "joe six pack" version and a deluxe edition on the same day - which is especially becoming the trend for films aimed at a more adult audience, like Phantom. However, if they are going to do that, it's suprising they don't differentiante the releases further - give the 2-Disc some deluxe packaging or something.

Also, even though the price is currently listed with only $2 difference, I bet they'll end up retailing like this:

1-Disc - $14.99
2-Disc - $19.99 (or more)

I don't know...it really depends on the store. At WalMart, the Aladdin Platinum was $13.99 and the Gift Set was $29.99  !! But that was only a week long sale. So I think it will be close to your prediction or about $14.99 and something around $16.99, $17.99

Bumping this thread up with some detailed info someone posted on IMDB. Apparantly the Region 1 version of the 2-disc will leave off a lot of bonus materials from other regional 2-discs. Only the features in bold will show up on the U.S. release:

* “Behind the Mask: The Story of The Phantom of the Opera” documentary - a 67-minute documentary on how the stage musical came about.

* The Music of The Phantom of the Opera featurette - interviews with John Snelson, biographer and musicologist, and Michael Coveney, critic and biographer

Original Promo Videos:
* The Phantom of the Opera: Steve Harley and Sarah Brightman
* All I Ask of You: Cliff Richard and Sarah Brightman
* The Music of the Night: Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman
* Wishing you Were Somehow Here Again: Sarah Brightman

* "The Making of the The Phantom of the Opera" documentary (46 min)
* Product Placement: Swarovski featurette (15 min)
* Special FX featurette (7 min)
* Visual FX featurette (12 min)
* Music/recording featurette (9 min)
* Production Design featurette (11 min)
* Costumes/make up featurette (8 min)
* Film Editing featurette (4 min)
* Emmy Rossum screen test (3 min)
* Cast & Crew ‘singalong’ (Easter Egg) (5 min)
* Deleted Scene: “No One Would Listen” (4 min)
* Theatrical Trailer (2 min)

Frankly, this sucks. I don't mind the promo videos being left out of the R1 release since what I really care about is anything related to the film itself, but leaving off all of the screen test and all of those featurettes is stupid. What's the point in leaving off things like that? Is WB trying to be clever and holding bonus features for a future SE (which wouldn't surprise me since there's no commentary track, and Joel Schumacher has done quite a few commentary tracks). I'm hoping the person who posted this was misinformed because this is ridiculous.

 If that's true I'm really angry with that decision, why do other Region releases have better extras? I still can't wait for this to come out though. :D
