Yes, I've seen it. I don't think it's any better than all the other twistedly gruesome horror movies out there. It doesn't come close to Beauty and the Beast, and I certainly don't think it's Oscar material.Alan wrote: Well, Silence of the Lambs IS a good horror movie. Have you even seen it before?
Beauty and the Beast Discussion
"I don't get high on drugs; I get high on Disney."
I never got this movie. I still don't. I almost enjoy it when I'm watching it, but I never can really enjoy it. I find the whole thing is very bland. Every scene of the movie feels like it's incomplete or that it's a workprint copy, not finished somehow. Like a rough draft rather than a final draft.

Beauty and the Beast is one of those few films that never grows old no matter how many times you see it, and each time it seems like you find something new. After all the years I've been watching it, it wasn't until a couple days ago that I noticed a few things, and wanted to see what anyone here thought. The most suttle are the spotlights on the stairs in the ballroom scene as they first see each other. I had never noticed them come on before. More importantly is a song connection. During "Belle", she sits by the fountain and sings a certain melody that is repeated later during "Something There." During that melody in "Belle", she says "Here's where she meets prince charming, but she won't discover that it's him till chapter three." Well Beauty and the Beast was written as a musical play, with 5 Acts. In what would be Act (chapter) 3, the "Something There" Act, during that same melody Belle says "true that he's no prince charming, but there's something in him that I simply didn't see." I just found it very amazing that the writers made such strong yet subtle musical connections. There were a few more things, but this is long enough. If you have the time, go through your dvd and check that out.

The only other significant one I realized involved Chip. I had never liked the fact that Mrs. Potts and Chip talked at the end of the "Beauty and the Beast" song because I thought it took away from the scene. But then I noticed that after Chip was sent away to bed he turned back around and gave a big smile in the direction of Belle and the Beast. I think this was an understanding look based on the library scene earlier in the film. Chip couldn't see what was so special between the two main characters, and now, after the ballroom scene, he finally understood the love between them. Cool little symbolic things like that add so much more to a movie than does forced dialogue like in the newer movies.

Your Favorite Part of Beutey And The Beast
My Favorite part is the the dinner scene when they sang Be Our Guest
and the very end part were he turns back into a man
and the very end part were he turns back into a man
Out of the fab four of the renaissance, this is honestly my least favorite.
With that said, it's still a great film that deserves to be recognized for it's brilliance in filmmaking and animation and music. It has some of the most memorable songs. It's also my boyfriends favorite (I prefer aladdin & the lion king.).. but he's got questionable taste ;-P

When I was watching Beauty and the Beast I noticed that in the scene after the ball when they are talking outside on the balcony the characters are not well defined and I know that this is because they put three versions of the movie on one disc, but I think that this scene is the most unrestored of the entire film because there's no scene on which the characters look as bad as they do here. It's a shame that we can't see this film completely restored just because they overload the disc.

Beauty and the Beast is one of my all time favorite movies. Not just animated movies, not just live action, not just a combination of the two, but a favorite movie of all time. And I'm sure that it will always be that way. This movie doesn't top The Little Mermaid, but it's a narrow second. The score is wonderful, and the lyrics that Mr. Ashman had written are wonderfully amazing. I wish that he could have done more Disney movies. The music, animation, and everything else, intertwined beautifully, and magically, the only way that a Disney movie can do. 10/10
To Howard Ashman:
Who gave a mermaid her voice
And a beast his soul

Since this topic is pretty general, I'm going to take the liberty to just write WHATEVER it is that comes to my mind about Beauty and the Beast.

NITPICKINESS--
-Whenever it comes to the bar scene, I don't know why, but I never REALLY WANT to watch it, but since its part of the story, I still do. I still enjoy it, but don't find anything about it particularly special, even though the gags with Lafu are pretty funny.
-Some scenes bother me when Belle doesn't look quite ON MODEL, like the part where she talks to the butcher and also when she says "You always say that" to her father, her face is a bit smooshed. There are also a few instances where Belle looks shorter than she should be.
-The horse's, Philippe, hair isn't blowing in the wind as hard as Belle's when she's taking the wagon off of him. ( I need to check this later)
-I've watched the "Belle" scene over and over, since it's the very first part, since I'm really interested in the animation technique I watch it slowly, there's one part when Belle backs up from Gaston and her head jerks back quite quickly, not very noticeable, just an observation.
-I like the "Human Again" song, but am not content with Mrs. Potts voice. I didn't buy the fact that the rose was out of the West Wing and that the Beast would put it on a walking table. Certain things about the scene didn't fit, like when the characters go off, and there are sound of hooves and cows mooing. The "no walking on grass" sign was also out of place.
-----
MUSIC AND SOUND--
-I absolutely LOVE the score, there is not one song in the whole movie I don't enjoy, the lyrics are perfect. Even the background tracks are beautiful, though at times I think it would have benifited the emotion of some scenes if it were louder, like the wolf chase scenes, the fight between Gaston and the Beast, and particularly when the beast dies.
-----
ANIMATION--
-The animation is amazing. This is the best animation style, in my opinion, of all the Disney movies. Aladdin is great but VERY stretchy, squashy. I love the more realistic feel of Beauty and the Beast.
-The way EVERYTHING is choriagraphed in "Belle." It's amazing how much you miss if you only look at the main characters.
--LITTLE THINGS I'VE JUST RECENTLY NOTICED--
Watching the film at a slower speed can also be rewarding, its funny to see a character you never really saw before, particularly the characters that are only on the screen for a few seconds.
-There's a kid chasing the pig, then the pig chases him back, it's funny to see his facial expressions. Also the shepherd chasing the sheep, I never really knew what he looked like before.
-While Belle is at the fountain, there's a woman cleaning her clothes, when she hears Belle sing she looks up at the sky wondering where the sound is coming from, then she sees Belle, and gets annoyed. Too funny.
-I just noticed this a few days ago, but the arrows on Gaston are always moving in the container their in, very subtle, but makes the movie more alive.
--FAVORITE BITS OF ANIMATION--
-They may be only a few seconds long, but I am totally in awe of the turnarounds in the movie. When Belle slides on the rolling ladder in the bookstore, when she jumps off the wagon just before entering the bookstore, and my personal favorite, the part where Belle sings "There must be more than this provincial life" the camera does a complete turnaround.
-Another one of my favorites is when Belle goes around the back of her house after being proposed to by Gaston. She then sings "Madam Gaston,.... etc" the animation is superb.
-The transformation- cool, including the transformation of the objects into humans.

SILLY KID MISUNDERSTANDINGS--
When Chip bubbles up the tea, Mrs. Potts scolds him, but THEN Mrs. Potts says "That's a brave thing you did". I always thought she was still talking to Chip, saying his bubbling was brave when in fact she was talking to Belle, of course.
-----
OTHER THINGS--
Is Gaston, in fact, the one that is responsible for the Beast returning to human? Since it seems the state the Beast was in meant Belle would have never returned to him. Hmmm...
-----
I'll probably update my post later, since I've only really "studied" the movie up to when Maurice leaves.
There's so much more to go.

The thing about this movie is that I never liked it as a kid. I had the tape and a bunch of other stuff, but I just never really watched it. A few weeks ago I dug out my old tape and watched it again and LOVED it! The story, the songs, the characters, everything. I honestly don't know what was wrong with my little-kid self.
And as much as I hate to admit it, I think my favorite character is Gaston. He's hilarious, and even though he's a complete arrogant jerk I can't help but love him. Plus "Gaston" is my favorite song of the movie. My other favorite characters are Lumiere, Chip, the Beast, and Belle.
So now I'm watching the movie all the time(poor tape, 10 years of not being watched now being sujected to heavy use and rewinding), and I even found my old cassette soundtrack, and (after I re-learned out how to use the tape player), I started listening to it. This is a great movie and definitely one of Disney's best.

Quite simply the best Disney movie ever made!
Can't really say anything more to do it justice - it's perfect, it's the film that got me interested in Disney again as an adult. I love the character of Belle and this is one of my favourite movies of all time.
I can't wait for this to arrive on Blu Ray.
In response to the person who wondered if Belle realised the portrait of the Prince was the Beast, why would she? At that point, all she's aware of is that the Beast is the master of the castle. She's obviously aware that there is some enchantment in the castle, but I don't think she's ever fully aware of the exact nature of the enchantment. Lumiere, Cogsworth and Mrs. Potts never actually discuss the spell with Belle, the way I see it is that they focus their efforts on getting the pair together. In fact, it's one of the requirements of the spell, that she has to give her love freely to him. It's certainly not the intent of the filmmakers that Belle is aware that he was a Prince, and will regain his humanity, and I think it does a disservice to her character and the story to suggest otherwise. Indeed, she is initially surprised at his transformation herself, and it's only when she looks into his eyes that she realises that the Prince is in fact the Beast she fell in love with.

There are so many movies which are not given awards because of the snobbery of the Academy.
When Star Wars was released in 1977, it was up for Best Picture but was turned down because it was a fantasy film.
Beauty and the Beast should have won.
What we can find solace in, is the fact that these movies have gone on to receive far more critical acclaim and recognition from the public than the Academy could ever lavish on them.
I think there are some films which have rightfully been recognised by the Oscars, but I do feel that there is far too much snobbery and in many cases they make poor choices - but I suppose the Oscars is not about representing public opinion.
